10GB iPod on clearance $249/219, B&M only

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I have been reading the web forums for the last few days about the whole Apple iPod mini fiasco, and I have to agree that I think $249 is overpriced for what you are getting. I was waiting/hoping for a better price from Apple before buying.

I checked the Apple online store to see if they were going to be clearancing out the remaining 10GB white iPods since they had announced that the 15GB was replacing the 10GB price point. There was zip online from Apple: it is as if the 10GB's had never existed.

I called my local Apple B&M and asked if they had any 10GB left - at this point more out of idle curiosity than a desire to purchase. The salesdude told me they had a bunch left, and that the were selling them for $249, $50 off the previous price and exactly the same as the iPod mini. So, now I am starting to get interested.

I asked if there was any Educational Discount on top of that. The guy clicked around on his keyboard for a while and I heard a whispered "Holy S**t" on the phone line. With the Educational Discount, they are clearancing for $219. I asked them how many were left in the store. He said "A whole bunch."

At this point, I got into the car and headed out. 3 hours later I am back with a new toy.

$219 for 10GB. 2.5x capacity of the mini, $30 cheaper. I like the design better on the older one, and 10GB is enough for me to upload my entire music collection with space leftover.

The best deal I have gotten in a long time. I had to pass this one on.

I agree this is a decent deal, although the EDU discount isn't really a surprise - flash a college ID and knock $30 off the price of any iPod model.

Good deal. Hopefully, Apple will be updating the 20GB iPod soon. If they do and are also clearanced, then I'll pick up one of those instead. I like the fact that the 20GB model also comes with the dock, a case, and remote. If I was to purchase all those separately, then the 10Gb model will cost just as much as the 20GB one.

Maybe I'll check my school just in case. They tend to have better clearance prices that Apple. If they have the 10GB model for under $200, then I'll grab one.

No - only for college students unfortunately. The reason that I got from my local Apple store is that if they gave the educational discount to everyone that's in school, nearly everybody would be able to purchase anything at a discount since there are so many parents out there and others that know children/teens. Makes sense. I actually had to use my student discount for my high school brother that was buying an iBook.

Vortix, you are incorrect. My friend, a HS senior, was able to get the discounted price from the Apple Online Store after faxing them a copy of his High School ID and schedule. I'm assuming only the ID is necessary at the Apple B&M store.

This deal is at the B&M stores. I was just saying that you can use the edu discount if you're a HS student, which my friend did at the online store.
