Can someone tell me how this can be accomplished affordably (under $5000) for several (5 to 10) computers? I have had no luck finding any info, I must be doing something wrong! I have a boatload of wire, but am not sure who makes the right switches, cards etc. If anyone can point me to a FAQ url or guide I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

The individual interfaces are a couple thousand dollars (US$) apiece.

With your budget, you could only get ~2-3 interfaces (then the switch to plug them into would be another couple thousand).

Give it up, wait a year or two.

Good Luck

Also, you will have to use fiber or Infiniband cabling as there are no UTP cable standards out yet for 10GE. Also, your PC can't even take full advantage of 1GE so 10GE is not going to get you anything. Most peope who are using 10GE are large enterprise customers who can afford it and they are using it for aggregation links on switches. Now, some companies are using it for server connections but those are few and far between and it is going to be a really high powered server. Most likely in this case the company needs more than a gig but is not going to be pushing 10GE

The optics for 10G are still very expensive.

Wait a while and they'll have it for copper.

I would love to know what sort of network of 5 computers needs a 10GbE ehternet connection. I'm still on 100Mb at home and it's fine for me.

Best you could do is $18,524.27 for a Foundry Networks 8x10G which has 8 10GbE fiber ports on it. That price probably doesn't even include the GBICs you'll have to purchase which 1Gb ones are running almost $400.00 at government pricing. So you may have to add another couple of thousand on top of that for the right GBIC for your purposes.

I appreciate the response, gentlemen. And I figure that since I dont have anyone to tell this to in my social circle, I will get the reason for wanting to try this off my chest. First, let me preface this all by saying in age I am past the mid-20's mark, and do mostly coordination of web projects and tech other stuff(boring) so am not really a complete noob. Knowing that, I recently went back home and visited Dads office to see him, and his best friend, who happens to run the IT dept. Also, one of my closest friends is dad's friends henchman. Now, they are building a new MILLION sq ft office building housing a 250thou sq ft data center, and made major investment on parts, assuming whatever they dont use will get auctioned or used by a subsidiary etc. Well, Mr. "Uncle IT" guy saw how my eyes lit up, and as most bosses of corporations are, knows dick about what he has, just knows that he has a lot of it with no way to track. So he took me aside and said, "as long as its not tooooo expensive make some requests." So, after a bit of thought I says to myself, I says "I need a fast F-in network so that by the time my girlfriend runs downstairs to escape the pron playing on my machine, I can have sent it to the living room to be played in all its 42" glory. And also, we do a lot of photography with a 16.7 MP camera, and are constantly moving the files around depending on where in the house we want to work. So thats the deal, but I guess i should keep it under $10 grand to keep him safe. I think 10GBe is fast enough, and saw this on CDW: Black Box Stackable Fiber Optic MiniHub Hub Black Box
Product Photo: 467584 line graphic
Product ID

CDW Part: 467584
Mfg. Part: LE2801A-FO
UNSPSC: 43222610

Dunno if I can post direct url's so i left out the first part of the adress: w.cdw.com/shop/products/accessories.aspx?EDC=467584
How would something like that do?

And what else would I need? who makes 10gbe capable cards?

Thanks for the responses and let me say that I am very grateful to get replies from super poster like you guys with 1000 plus posts. I hope to be as contributivr as you guys in time. Thanks again! Smackbomb

What about 2x 1Gb? There are network cards out there that have dual Gb NICs. This would give you 2Gb (4Gb at full-duplex). Not 10Gb I know...but a HELL of a lot cheaper.

Dude I don't mean to thread crap but 5 grand sounds toooo expensive. I mean free is for me but not at the expense of having lil Bobo (who's really 6'8" @ 450 pounds) staring at me saying "you look mighty sweet, you my new b**ch".

I'm running a gigabit network at home, it does it's job very well and was pretty cheap to setup.

Well in this instance, i recommend a skilled professional to do the work for you.

what the OP is requesting is quite impossible.

A 250 thousand sq feet data center ranks right up there with some of the largest in the world.

Gigabit networking is more than enough for anyone in any home. Do the conversion - 1 gigabit/s = 128MB/s of sustained transfer speeds. Now, there is overhead etc, so you will never reach the full 128MB/s, so lets say you get 100MB/s...

The ATAPI ATA100 standard only allows 100MB/s max. The 133 standard obviously allows 133MB/s baring overheard.

Lets say you are Mr. Fancy and have SATA - 150MB/s on your hard drive. Got a brand new drive and motherboard? Wow you can do 300MB/s to your hard drive!

Well the only problem is even the fastest hard drives can only sustain 60-70MB/s. To even saturate 1Gbit networking you would require at least two fast drives in RAID0. Plus you would need this on both ends or the recieving end would not be able to keep up.

So you can set up a home Gigabit network on Cat5E cable, including the switch, for around maybe $100 including NICs, which has more bandwidth available than any consumer level hard drive can use.

Or, you can be a complete ass and steal hardware from your dad's company to give you a network you can't utilize.

You know what would be awesome? Your dad's boss who knows nothing finds out after you take this stuff, and he and his friend lose thier jobs and are charged with theft over $5000. Man you would be able to watch the streaming video of his court appearance though!

Oh, and don't post crap like this on public message boards - you never know who reads them.

Whoa! I missed it.... 250K sqft data center? This is taken from a web hosting service I once did business with:

"Our powerful servers are co-located in a Data Center facility infrastructure that starts with five diverse OC48 SONET fiber rings and 1 OC192 SONET fiber ring, providing the basic connectivity to six different Internet access carriers. The 35,000 square foot datacenter is state of the art. The bare essentials are: A preaction dry-pipe sprinkler system with 580 smoke detectors and a VESDA contaminate system to create a full proof fire prevention system. 23 - 26 ton Data Aire down flow air conditioners designed to run in complete redundancy for maximum cooling. 6 -500KVA Powerware UPS battery backup systems with 90 batteries each (540 total) for up to 80 minutes of UPS battery backup power. 2 - Cummins backup generators. Big Moe, that's his name, is a 1.5Megawatt 16 cylinder diesel with a 2200 gallon diesel fuel tank. Little Joe, the not-so-small guy, is a 1.0Megawatt 12 cylinder diesel with a 2000 gallon diesel fuel tank. The datacenter can operate for 15 days on generator power without a refuel. Couple these generators with three input electrical feeds to two different city grids in downtown Dallas and our uptime guarantee on power is 100%." - OSISHOSTING.COM

250K sqft datacenter? That will cost MILLIONS... and your family member is paying for it all? I don't think so, rich people don't usually put up their own money for a business venture...usually there are partners involved and the business venture is incorporated (to get the tax bennies)...and you want to order some equipment for your own personal use???? That's called EMBEZZLEMENT!!! Let me know where they send you to federal prison. I mail you a postcard. I'm off this thread. I don't want to give my advice for something that might involve breaking the law....

Yeah, 250k sqft data center is one of the largest in the world. Thompson Legal (they house all law books known to man) is one of the top three data centers in the western US (actually its in MN, but a line must be drawn somewhere). It is only 100k sq feet in each datacenter. They also have OC12 connections coming in.

So, if you know somebody building a 250k data center, they are definitely in the top 100-200 largest companies in the world.
