Must be the only buyer...
in the world who had gotten an Ipod from Apple Refurb that doesnt look new.. got mine today, and it looks USED.
Scratches and a largish scuff on front, scratches to metal back, some tiny nicks roughen the sharp edge of the lucite front, some button wear. Overall, was pretty pissed off after waiting since the 10th.
OTOH, when I called and bitched about it, they took off $25, so that is $144 shipped for the 2G 10gig Ipod. Since I sold my 10gig Archos from the Amazon sale for $159 (cost $50 after rebate and promo certificate), umm that is $150 (archos)-50-50-159+144(ipod)=$35 out of pocket for the Ipod. Not quite as good as that guy who got the $20 ones over on FW, but not too shabby. Most or all of the marks should polish out using one of the various Ipod or lucite polishes when I get around to it.
I can now also definately say, that when listening to the same MP3s (192k) on both the Archos 10gig and the 2G Ipod 10 gig, with Sennheiser MX500 or PMX 60 phones, the Ipod sounds 100% better than the Archos. Cleaner crisper highs, louder at default volumes, less distortion (none) at max volume, and stronger cleaner bass (Archos sounded a little muddy). That was even when using Rockbox on the Archos and tweaking the equalizer.
As far as the low volume issue some have noted on the Ipod, it is all in the phones. With my Sennheisers, I can't turn the volume up all the way without risking permanent hearing loss. I have not "unlocked" the Ipod volume either.
So to make a long post short: if your Ipod was rushed to you in less than perfect shape, call Apple and complain. They will offer to refund your $, exchange if they have the same model in stock, or if you push, give you a credit.
