apple's refurbished deal is fine. I ordered a refurbished 15GB ipod with dock last week, and it came with everything including the box, manuals, earphones, remote and carry case. total was 300, cause I missed this great deal. Now, I use the ipod at work and I love it. Only filled 3 gigs of music, and the rest for portable storage. Everyone wants one too, since everytime we use our mp3 cds in the dell machines, they stop responding for a few seconds ;(

Doh! Ya snooze, ya lose. Hopefully more of those 10 gigs show up. You can delete the software on the "mac" version and get some that's compatable with windows, right? This is just what I heard.

So to make a long post short: if your Ipod was rushed to you in less than perfect shape, call Apple and complain. They will offer to refund your $, exchange if they have the same model in stock, or if you push, give you a credit.

You're NOT the only one -- I got the same thing!

Apple's QA on this new batch of refurbs is pathetic. First, it's shipped in a brown box, not the nice box you normally get your new iPod in. It was disappointing given the experience others have relayed, but certainly not a deal breaker.

But the iPod itself is in questionable condition. I doubt that it was "refurbished" at all... it looks like they got a return from someone and just stuck it in the outgoing queue. There are scratches on both the front and back. There are little scrape marks on the touchpad itself. There is GRIME around the indented play/menu/etc. buttons. I've had another (new, at the time) 15gb ipod since May, used daily, and it's in better condition than this one is.

I've called them up, but because they no longer have any more 15gb ipods on their web store, they can't offer to replace this one. I was told that my only option is to return it for a refund.

If I wanted a used ipod, I would have gone to ebay or craigslist. This is NOT acceptable. And it's even more ridiculous that I had to wait two weeks for it. If you take advantage of this "special deal" from Apple, beware... had I known that it was going to come in this condition, I never would have bothered. :disgust:

I called them earlier today. They were quite unhelpful. They only offered to either waive the restocking fee or send some cheap crappy case for under $25, and this was after forcing the CSR to talk to their supervisor. I asked them about a credit and they said that they couldn't do that, when I mentioned that they offered a credit to other people they accused me of trying to take advantage of them :disgust:

jeffspam, by the way, what model did you order? I got a 2nd gen 10gb, just curious whether Apple's new "standards" for refurbs applies to the newer models as well.

I ordered a 15gb 3rd gen.

I asked them about a credit and they said that they couldn't do that, when I mentioned that they offered a credit to other people they accused me of trying to take advantage of them

If they try to deny me a credit, a quick call to Amex will resolve this quickly. Amex, though $55/yr, is great about siding with the customer in billing disputes. But I'm not going there quite yet... I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve still. I'll keep posting if I get results.

I ordered the 10gb Mac version iPod (2G) on 10th around 6-7AM EST time. Mine was shipped on 22nd and received on the 24th. Every accessories were sealed and the iPod itself looked new, but the box I received on was not the retail box. Instead, it was in a brown box that says Apple Inc, Reconditioned Product.

I wonder what's going on here. I just hope my iPod doesn't break within a week or so.

My 2nd Gen 10GB was delivered today. I haven't seen it firsthand, but I had my wife examine it after reading the latest posts. It came in a brown box, had small scratches on the metal finish (nothing major), and the front looks like new according to her. Hopefully it will charge up and function without any problems when I get home.

Well my order status just went from shipping today to shipping 10/3... apparently they learned nothing from the last time they oversold them.

it sucks people are getting blemished iPods. from my experience, refurb stuff always has a disclaimer saying, "may have minor blemishes, blah, blah". so you are basically taking a gamble. But, looking at Apple's refurb description, they make it sound like you're iPod should come in near mint condition. Also, for those getting iPods in anything other than a new iPod box, check this out:

AT A GLANCE:
Looking for great Computer equipment at even better prices?
Refurbished Apple Products are pre-owned Apple products that are placed into Apple's stringent Refurbishment Process prior to being offered for Sale.

Each unit is fully tested (including full burn-in testing); refurbished with replacement parts for any defective modules identified in testing; put through a thorough cleaning process and inspection; repackaged (including appropriate manuals, cables, new boxes, etc.), and given a new refurbished part number and serial number. Each unit is also placed into a Final QA inspection prior to being added to sellable refurbished stock. Refurbishment Procedures follow the same basic technical guidelines as Apple's Finished Goods testing procedures.

IMPORTANT:
Supplies of Refurbished products are limited. For the latest information on product availability, call the Apple Store at 1-800-MY-APPLE (692-7753).

REFURBISHED PRODUCT ONE-YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY:

AppleCare Protection Plan (APP):

This comprehensive plan includes telephone support, Apple-certified repairs, web-based support resources, and powerful diagnostic tools--all for one economical price. The AppleCare Protection Plan is available for refurbished products that were purchased on or after May 1, 2001. (EXCEPTION: The AppleCare Protection Plan is NOT available for new or refurbished iPods.)

it says "new box" right there.

good luck!

ordered 09/12, shipped 09/23, received 9/25
refurb 10gb iPod MAC version, it was shipped out of Elk Grove, CA

The one I received looks brand new, if not for the small sticker on the shrink wrap that says reconditioned, no one would be able to tell it wasn't new. It was shipped in the normal iPod "retail" box which was shrink wrapped and was inside a bigger white box with some bags of air for cushioning. All the included accessories were brand new in sealed bags and the iPod itself is flawless. I promptly updated it to a Windows firmware and am now enjoying it on my Windows pc. I guess I lucked out.

I'm curious though, those of you that got the scratched up non-new looking iPods, did you order for MAC or Windows, maybe they're shafting us Window users on the 2nd generation refurbs. As for the 3rd gens being scratched, maybe its just supply and demand and they're cuttin corners to fill the orders.

Hopefully, Apple will get so many complaints from pissed off clientele that they'll start shipping out new ones for the refurb customers... so keep it up people. On a side note, this is starting to change my perception of Apple and of the iPod. Why would they get so many iPods sent back in the first place? Isn't this supposed to be a good product?

I also have a theory. Did you guys who got objectionable iPods order from them before. I'm a new customer and just started an account with them a few days ago, so I'm guessing that they'd send the good ones to the newbies and shaft people who have been getting these deals for a lont time now.
