@mopardude87 , I had to upgrade my ram to 32 gig on all my 3900x's.

As for folding and Rosetta, yes, GPUs on folding, and whats left for CPU's on Rosetta is the way to go, they work fine together, all my rigs are configured that way.. I tell BOINC to use all the cpu time, but 90 or 95% of theCPUs. That leaves abou 2 threads for the video card, which is fine.. So you end of with 22 on the CPUs doing Rosetta, and 2 working the video cards.

Thanks Mark and everyone else who responded to my stuff.

Could you possibly link the best url link for a project? I downloaded the client but its asking for a link? I found this link but i wouldn't know where to begin or end given i wanna just do mostly that thing that shall not be named. Sorry for not just saying the c word, i don't feed negative energy by speaking the word it goes against my beliefs. I rebuke the word pretty much.

Not gonna set up till my 3900x arrives and its installed i got stuff bookmarked from here and synced to my google so with luck if i get no doa parts i could perhaps start folding this very evening. I may have a bit of fun seeing how broken the 3900x may be with BF5 perhaps before its work time. Haven't gamed on my 1080ti in a game in over 2 weeks .I feel a equal balance of work/play must come out of my rig. At least more work then play till the dual gpus come then yeah its go time for sure.

Hope not to sound spammy with YET one more post but WOW you guys are beyond awesome.

I try and respond to one post and everyone is trying to offer their help, suggestions and opinions so the thread is getting updated before i could even finish the post ha. Beautiful group of people here . Will try and hear you all out the best i can. Bare with my noobish ways, folding is a bit new to me still but trying to pick up on tricks and tools in hopes i could past it along later. I already did this by sharing the trick of the pause/ fold fix for F@H for another member not getting wu.

I feel any knowledge that is offered this way regarding Rosetta and F@H is a gift, and i thank you all for it! Knowledge is the the best gift anyone can give to another person. Thanks again.

The project URL of Rosetta@home has been updated a few days ago. Be sure to enter this:

https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/

(Edit: The older URL is the same but with http instead of https. It continues to work too, but the client will periodically have messages in the log reminding that there is now a newer URL. The change to https was of course for more security.
There is also a selection window with a variety of projects in the boincmgr, including Rosetta, but this selection still has the old http URL.)

Thanks! The Url worked like a charm. Also bookmarked for later. Doing a fresh format so yeah gonna need all those links and bookmarks ready to go. I just pretty much pick Rosesetta, set up a account and prob tinker with settings and its off to the races? I will prob tinker and play with it now since my 3900x won't be here prob till closer to 6pm if i am lucky. Might be fun to see what 11 threads on the 7700k does in comparison to the 3900x too!

Edit: Its downloading something but telling me its gonna be over a entire day before its done.

I wrote...

I was referring to the window which you get with boinc manager's "Tools" -> "Add project..." menu. As you made a fresh installation, it may actually be possible that my info is outdated and they updated the Rosetta URL already in there. I have only old boinc installations here, which have not picked up a refresh of the project list by themselves yet. Hence this could look different at your installation. — But that's details; you can copy+paste the above Rosetta URL and then you are sure to have the new one.

Edit,

Yes. Just be sure you join your account with TeAm AnandTech here:

On older hardware, like my old AMD APUs, I only have 4 threads. If I tell BOINC to use only 75% of CPUs (1 CPU), my PPD drops by 50k-100k on my A10-5800k. If I only use 50% of CPUs (2CPUs) I pickup that 50-100k PPD, but I gain no extra PPD by having all 4 CPUs dedicated to folding. I settled on 75% of CPUs - I'll take the slightly longer turn around times when I do get Folding WUs, so that I have 3 threads running Rosetta when I fail to get F@H WUs.

On my Ryzen 2700x, I've set boinc to use 15 of the 16 CPUs and my 1080ti folds all the time. There appears to be no gain in PPD by reserving 2 CPUs vs 1 CPU, BUT I can't say it gets consistent enough work with F@H to really verify that.
Its something you have to play with. I have no machines with less than 12 physical CPU's and 24 threads. On a 3900x, 1 is probably OK. As you said, if you only have 4, then you have to change the percentage

I feel like a jack ass its not downloading something the damn thing is maxing out my cpu DERP. Ignore the message i sent Mark, i just had a bit of a moment. That happens when ya clock in 4 hours of sleep lmfao.

I hope this client picks up on the fact i just joined team, it should be auto if i set it up via web browser? Oh when it was maxing out 76% of the cpu um the ppd on the 1080ti was still over 1.2m which is typical with most WU. Yay its working quite nicely!

Oh yes, initial download of the Rosetta project consists of many hundred MBs.
After everything got downloaded and uncompressed, it takes >1.5 GB on the disk.

(Edit, this is a bit different compared to F@h: There you have comparably large transfers down and up for each WU. With R@h, there are very large database data which are downloaded once and then re-used between many WUs, and the subsequent transfers per each WU are not as large.)

Still tinkering with it, just need to make sure the client is connected and that its recognizing i am on the team now. Gonna set the cpu to use 75% for now and work from there. I load typically closer to 19% max usage just with tabs open and F@H. I suspended gpu folding on BOINC and looking at other stuff but i think its prob good with just a adjustment to the cpu usage?

Some random thoughts:
  • Your team affiliation is shown, among else, at the top right of https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/home.php after you logged in into the web site.
  • Locally on your computer, in boinc manager's "View" menu, you can switch between Simple View (comes up by default), and Advanced View.
The tinkerers among us prefer the Advanced View of course.
  • Simple View's "Options" -> Computing preferences" contains a setting which says
"Use at most __ % CPU time".
This should be kept at 100. Less than that doesn't make sense, it would merely start and stop and start and stop and start... the Rosetta tasks all the time, which is bogus.
  • Instead, use Advanced View's "Options" -> "Computing preferences".
There are two CPU related settings:
    • The top one is the one you want to modify:
"Use at most __ % of the CPUs".
E.g. if you have an i7-7700K with 4 cores/ 8 threads, setting this to 75 % will cause BOINC to run 6 Rosetta tasks at once.
    • The second setting is the same as in the Simple View:
"Use at most __ % of CPU time".
Again, keep this one at 100.
  • In the Projects tab of Advanced View, you can see your team affiliation also.

Much help and if it doesn't hurt ppd on the 1080ti which is running F@H then i am fine leaving it at 100% . I prob may not be able to on the 3900x at max though, depends as its gonna be on the stock cooler till my stimulus or Junes funds come in whichever is first then its getting a NH-D15 cooler. Yeah i kept noticing the cpu usage kept bouncing all over the place which was sorta annoying so thanks for the tips.

yeah i see 7 instances it appears like of stuff going on, it should only be a single crunching right? Aborted all but one, relogged in and it downloaded 6 more and now its 7 tasks running and crunching. Normal?

The Rosetta application is single-threaded. If you allow BOINC to use, for example, 7 logical CPUs, then it will launch 7 Rosetta tasks in parallel. You can see this in boinc managers Advanced View, as well as in the operating system's task manager.

As others have noted, on Intel CPUs which have HyperThreading (HT) enabled, it has been found by several F@H + BOINC users that F@H GPU performance is better if you let BOINC use 2 threads* less than there are total hardware threads – notably if it is an NVidia GPU. On AMD CPUs which have Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) enabled, it is more typically sufficient for F@H GPU performance to cap BOINC at 1 thread* less than total hardware threads.

*) That's for systems with single dGPU for F@H. Deduct respectively more threads on multi-dGPU computers.

Yeah Mark was telling me to set up 100% cpu time, 90% of the cpu. will toy with your idea as well unless setting the cpu to 90% of its usage is more or less doing that. I got no options in task manager to mess with Boincs affinity so i assume the 90% cpu tweak is the right one. I can set affinities in F@H and its not really seeming to matter if i set up one thread or all on there as the pdd stays about the same it seems given all threads are fully loaded atm.

Sorry for all the hassle and the babysitting just trying to set it up as correctly and as efficiently as possible. Kind of a learning curve . Thanks for bearing with me and helping out

When i game i could just set the cpu core usage to 50% on the 3900x or whatever and be on my merry old way? Prob could do 85% for most games besides BF5 and COD WW2. Not sure when i get AC: Odyssey and the new one and Cyberpunk what settings but i figure 50% should cover about all those games for sure on this rig. Maybe even BF5?

When Gaming, I would change number of BOINC CPUs from 90% to 50%. That should let the game have 10 CPUs, which should be plenty, and maybe even give you a little extra thermal headroom for a clock boost.

This is sorta what i had in mind and figured, the entire point of the KRONOS build is half work/half pleasure so 50% is perfect then. Luckily i discovered Boinc and its awesomeness sooner rather then later. I was about ready to have something of a nightmare prob trying to get F@H to run effortlessly on both cpu and client. I plan on prob a 32 thread 4000 series for when games push 16 threads and split it just the same. That is assuming its a worthy upgrade.

Yeah i picked the 3900x cause from what i understand its a better boosting chip over a 3950x on massive loads and well a $730 odd dollar 3950x isn't exactly something i wanted to pick up just yet. The 3900x is the second most expensive cpu i bought behind a i7 940 back in summer of 2009.

Thanks for the reply and consideration of the boost clocks.

I have a similar plan as you, though I’m planning on a Main Linux host where I can launch VMs for things like gaming

I might maybe try dual booting some version of linux perhaps if the ppd difference is that big as i heard it is like in the 2060 ppd thread. I used to run Ubuntu back during the Vista days as it was fresher then xp yet more reliable then Vista .I had a dual boot of this and XP. My desktop looked very much like this with berl and stuff fully going on Not my video but it was damn close to this. I stopped running this about the time Vista SP1 came out and got rid of Xp too. I had a Q6600 and a 8800gts 512mb and it was quite quicker then Vista but as a gamer yeah Vista SP1 won me over. I didn't do any sort of folding till i had my gtx285 in 2009. The 500 and 600 series was so bad in my experience with F@H not working i didn't get back into it seriously till these last few weeks.

Not sure if you could have this much fun still with Ubuntu still but i may return to trying it assuming i could remember how to dual boot. I haven't done it in quite a while! I think i just split my main drive which was a 150gb raptor into dual partitions then installed Xp on one and Ubuntu on the other. Had the choice to boot off either if i remember too. Yeah only been 12 years since i did this so its a bit foggy but i certainly didn't forget the beryl effects!

Mint 19.3 (Ubuntu) couldn't be any easier to install on top of an existing Windows installation. 1.) Find a program to put the ISO onto a stick drive, 2.) If you use 'boot menu' make sure you select the UEFI version of the USB drive or it won't see Windows 3.) During Mint install it will ask how much disk you want to split up and give it. Relatively quick process. At each reboot, you get a 10 second window to choose which OS you want, it defaults to Linux...if you find a way to change the default to Windows, let me know. Haven't actually put effort into it yet.

Sounds about how i last did this from what i can remember, except i ran stuff back in the day on a dvd LOL. Yeah i will look into it prob this week.

I was convinced my package would come today from UPS but tracking is royally screwed up. It was out for delivery. I guess it was on a truck then suddenly it was removed? Tracking now says its in town on a arrival scan now. Both claims happened at 10:14am . Very annoying as UPS is usually very flawless.

Another thought about BOINC configuration:
There are preferences which can be set locally through boincmgr, other preferences which can be set remotely via your user page at the project's web server, and further preferences which you can set either locally through boincmgr or remotely through the web.
First, a set of preferences which are can be set only locally:
  • This is for advanced purposes, and most BOINC users can ignore this completely.
  • But for those who are curious, here are some random links which I just throw in here without further explanation:
cc config, app config, remote gui
Second, a set of preferences which can be set only remotely through the web page:
  • "Preferences for this project", e.g. Rosetta@home preferences
  • In case of Rosetta@home, these are not overly interesting. Most users can leave these at defaults without worry.
  • But Universe@Home preferences have important settings — for those who want to join the TeAm in the upcoming "City Run" contest of the Pentathlon. Please review the technical details in post #1.
  • "Message boards and private messages". These are some (quite non-essential) options for taking part in the forums at the project web site, and other communications from the project site.
Last, but not least, a set of preferences which you can choose to set locally or remotely:
  • These are the important computing preferences, e.g. fraction of CPUs to be assigned to BOINC.
  • In boincmgr — preferably after switching from "View" -> "Advanced view" — they are in "Options" -> "Computing preferences".
At the top of this prefs dialogue you see a button which lets you switch from local preferences to web preferences.
  • The equivalent on the web at your user page: "When and how BOINC uses your computer", e.g. through the Rosetta@home site: Computing preferences
  • Both ways, local or through the web, work the same.
Except that locally made changes affect the client immediately, whereas changes made through the web get effective only after the client contacted the project server for one or another reason. You can initiate contact in boincmgr's Projects tab with the Update button.
  • If you have several computers which you want to configure differently, the local way may be more convenient.
  • If you have several computers which you want to configure the same, the web way may be more convenient.
  • A freshly installed BOINC client will start off using the web preferences; it doesn't have a local override for these settings until the user configures any manually.

Waiting for my stimulus AND Ampere is like watching GOT just WAITING for Winter to come, like geez its only taking FOREVER. I got a idea if you guys could help out please?

I am prob going to upgrade my PSU to a 1000 watt this week hopefully assuming Winter errr sorry my stimulus comes to ensure its gonna handle the demands of my KRONOS tribute build with those dual Ampere cards but for the moment till the 3080/3080ti/4000 series Ryzen 32 thread options come out what would you guys recommend to put into the second x16 slot that is running at 4x on my Aorus Elite X570 as a cheap filler? I am thinking a used 1070 or a 1650 super as i believe those would max out the 2500k htpc platform which may get a xeon upgrade when i finally pass it down when i set up the dual Amperes on the new sli/nvlink motherboard.

Whatever gpu i pick for that slot will obviously not go to waste as its gonna game/fold during night hours alongside the 1080ti/3900x when i sleep .I got a network of 5 computers mostly belonging to friends that all will get 2020 upgrades as all my hardware gets passed down but gonna focus on a friends rig with a 2500k/1050ti getting my 7700k/1080ti before year is out then the htpc getting a upgrade from a i3 2100/gtx660 to the i5 2500k/1070/1650 super.

Going fully back into my hobby of computers at full on tilt it appears like. A first for me since 2010. Not exactly a hobby as its a bit more then most can understand. A few select in the forums know exactly whats up. Thanks to anyone who can offer input on this and blessed be!

Edit: added mention of 4000 series. Bit tired i got only 4 hours or so of sleep again cause well its like Christmas, i cant sleep thinking of those threads coming today! Its why i keep editing my post LOL. So yeah sorry

Welcome guys .

I've switched my main rig fom 10 to 12 threads for Rosetta, then I'm going to stop F@H after it's current WU to save power (~120w) so that I can run Rosetta on my 2nd rig without putting up power usage up too much (2nd rig uses ~ 240w CPU crunching). A little extra for the Team at least!

Nice upgrade for the main rig but so odd how your post overlapped mine LOL. The timestamp and stuff is VERY wrong but that is ok . Yeah i am going full on tilt myself this year. A first since late 2009 with the i7 940/gtx295 i had . Gonna release the Kraken so to speak, not bragging i promise but like HYPED so bare with me
