yep stso, exactly the same, these cd clubs are sneaky as hell. how generous of them to ship us a randomly selected cd every month and automatically charge us for it :disgust:

Good plan: Close Napster, start buying overpriced, $9 per cd shipping, random "selection o' the month discs from a club.

Not.

I'll stick to buying my cd's from Best Buy or Circuit City. Better prices, no shipping charge (not counting gas), and at no extra charge: No card to return! :0

I didn't check out the CDHQ.com site but if it's anything like Columbia House...STAY AWAY! It'll end up costing you about $150 for 24 CD's. With BMG you buy 12 CDs for the price of 1. It'll cost you about $45 for 12 CD's and your obligation is done...no more to buy. Way better deal than Columbia House. I'm in BMG, it's not so bad. I've been in both but I'm only in BMG now.

I really like BMG, and the 12 for 1 deal was fantastic. They're always having 80 or 90% off deals, and free cd deals.

I haven't used them in a couple of years...but actually, the CDHQ deal is every bit as good as BMG's...doesn't have the massive purchase requirements of a normal CH deal. Also, you only get the "randomly selected" CD if you choose not to respond to your monthly mailers. Here's an idea: most of you have computers, don't you? You can fill out those responses online - only takes about 30 seconds. (same as the CH DVD club, which I abuse frequently, but that's a different thread! ) I believe you can even get preferred member status where the selections aren't auto-sent if you don't respond.

If this club is like BMG, than this is a good deal. I broke down the cost of BMG and figured it to be less than $4 a cd for everything including the 1 cd you have to buy & shipping. When I had a BMG membership there where a few new cd's I could not get(they just where not available in their catalog). This club may take care of that problem.

Columbia House has really bad customer service and the music selection is so limited.

The trick to columbia house is to call them and tell them that you dont want to recieve there "sample" of CDs. Also its best to fullfill there membership obligations asap and canel your membership.

How hard is it for you guys to reply to their monthly mailings? Everybody here seems able to jump through hoops to get a purchase a product that requires thirteen rebates and a pricematch, but you can't lick a stamp? (They even come pre-licked these days). I used to do these deals, and the few times I forgot to mail the form back saying I didn't want the CD they mailed me, I'd just write "Return to Sender" on the package and drop it in the mail. These things really aren't that hard.

Most of you seem really dorky about this. I'll make it easy for you.

a) Do you like cds?
b) Do you have a more or less mainstream taste in music?
c) Do you resent paying $15 - $18 for a cd?
d) If you answered yes to the above, check out the www.cdhq.com url.

Pick 12 cds. It'll work out something like the following:

(12 x $2.50 S&H) + (price of one CD - lets say $15) = $45

45 / 12 = $3.75 per CD.

Obviously, as soon as you've collected your 12 $3.75 CDs you quit the club.

If you don't understand this, go back to college.

I'll be using this to finish out my Pavement, Superchunk and GBV collection. Sheet, if I don't like any of the disks I'll cbay them for probobly twice what I paid!

CDHQ is actually Columbia House with a different look. All mailings, packagings, etc. are the same. I believe it was created to compete more with BMG.

Okay, does ANYONE really think that Napster was the ONLY means of getting MP3?

Please.

BMG is ok if u like older stuff (selection is spotty for new stuff)

also, u no longer have to return a card because you can cancel your featured selections online... i've been doing it this way for over a year and have never received an unsolicited CD...

Tip: when you buy the one you have to buy, do it a time when they have a "Buy 1 get 3 free" promo... After I got my first 7 they sent me a little coupon for like 7 more free...

I remember everyone doing the Columbia House thing in college. We...err...I mean, "my friends" would get the 12 free CD's (or whatever) and then send a letter to the company saying:

"Dear Sirs, I will be continuing my education in Spain next semester, so please update my address in your system to reflect the following..." (and then, of course, they would add a bogus address supposedly in Spain).

But then CH would send back a letter saying:

"Thank you for your letter notifying us of your change of address. Unfortunately we do not operate outside the US, so with great regret we must cancel your account. Please let us know if/when you move back to the US and we will be happy to reinstate your account with full privileges. Sincerely, CH"

I'm sure they're wise to this trick now though...
