12" COOL and QUIET laptop?

Hello,

I am looking to get a 12" laptop. One major concern is heat and noise. I recently was using a friend's Toshiba 14" laptop and the fan would come on every 1 minute for a few seconds. It was really annoying. I looked at Sony's S series but read in all reviews that it run very hot and that it is too noisy.

Ideally I would like it to have a high performance CPU. I do not want a ULV CPU like the Thinkpad X series. I understand that the fan has to come on when I run CPU intensive apps, but I do not want it on when browsing the web or checking e-mail.

I was looking into the MSI S270 with the MT40 CPU and the Asus W5A. I was wondering if any of view has any of the above laptops and could comment on the heat/noise issues. Also if you have any other laptop recommendations they would be welcomed! I do not want apple powerbooks and my budget is around $1700.

:thumbsup: for the 700m. Mine is always silent, though I run the cpu in dynamic switching mode which keeps it at 600mhz most of the time. The only time the fan comes on is when I'm really working the CPU for a while, which is rare. In most regular use, the fan never comes on so there's no noise. The price was right too. My 700m was slightly under $1k, but that included 2 extended batteries, 2 AC adapters, and a 1.8 P-M upgrade. It also included 512 megs of ram from Newegg. Watch for Dell's coupons and score a good deal. If you don't want to wait, you can still get a ton of laptop for $1700.

the dell 700m is too cheap for most people to pass up. with the 750 off coupon, i paid $770 or so for my 700m

i use centrino hardware control and control my voltages. my laptop gets better battery now and is very cool and quiet because of the decrease in voltage

Anybody knows if there is a program similar to "centrino hardware control" that would work with Turion CPU's?

I think that this article does not talk about the MSI laptop specifically. It is more of a Turion bashing.

It is very funny to see someone that is not objective. Clearly the hardwarezone article is not objective, as it is bashing the Turion which is an excellent processor. I am not saying if it is better or not than the Pentium M, but clearly you cannot have a review and say that they have to redesign this brand new and good processor. Especially when other reviews show that it is on par with the Pentium M.

There have only been one article that has the Turion comparable, the laptoplogic one. All other reviews have the P-M clearly superior in power usage.

This one has a faster, bigger LCD, faster HD Gateway using less power than their Acer:

This one compares otherwise identical equipped Asus 6K laptops where the battery life of the 2.2GHz Turion is 60-80% worse than a 2GHz P-M.

i'd still have a Turion avec 6150/430 chipset over a Centrino setup any day.

it's a closer call when an ATI chipset is involved.......
