Read the headlines this morning. Man what terrible news. What's with all the mass shootings these days?

At least they seem to have caught the guy.

The day is hot, the Capulets abroad,
And, if we meet, we shall not ’scape a brawl;
For now, these hot days, is the mad blood stirring.

1. Take all morals out of schools.
2. Spoil kids.
3. Feed kids fat food.
4. Over medicate when they bounce off the walls.
5. Teach them that everyone wins, life is fair, and if your life sucks, someone else is to blame.
6. Profit!!!

Another reason to watch movies at your home theater instead of public cinemas.

this is what happens when people are allowed to buy guns

I try to be open minded about this but why do we need to have semi automatic weapons and other guns with no specific use (other than causing people harm) available to any deranged fuck who walks into a store and simply has no priors? If the choice is hunting (and continuing these loose gun control policcies) or 'just get your fucking moose steaks from the store,' I don't really see why people are so passionate about protecting that right..

Who the hell does this? Who would even think.. "gee there are tons of people going to enjoy a movie, I'm gonna go kill them." I understand as Americans we have plenty of enemies but why target mostly innocent people trying to enjoy themselves?

RIP

This is ridiculous.

It's the reason I disagree with gun ownership. Shit like this shouldn't happen as often as it seems to America.

this is what happens when people are allowed to buy guns

Oh shut the fuck up.

People that want kill people will get their guns illegally, why would breaking one law but not the other be ok to them? Granted it would be more expensive to get a gun, it would just be one more thing to have brought into the country from mexico.

For every one nutjob there are countless sane people with firearms. You never hear about how some guy lived his whole life and never shot anyone. I feel for these people, what this guy did was wrong and he should be punished. But I'm not so naive to think that he couldn't have done just as much damage without guns.

He wanted to kill people for some sick reason, he found a way to do that. He would have always found a way to do that.

But had someone like me or any of the other countless people who legally carry firearms for our protection, he might not had such a easy time doing it. Of course I can't carry a firearm into a theater because all movie theaters have posted a sign that says "No guns allowed" and I respect private property rights.

I own a single gun for self defense (my walther pps) that I carry, but I own at least a dozen guns for sport shooting (tri-gun, idpa, etc) as well as just general enjoyment and history (I love my M1, mosin, ak, etc). I don't feel my rights should be trampled by a random nutjob. He could have killed people with a car bomb, He could have killed people with fire, etc.

I am personally willing to risk my security for my liberty.

This is the last I'll say about this on this thread. This conversation is really P&N and it draws away from the tragedy. People died, and their deaths shouldn't be trivialized into pushing political agendas.

This. Anti-gun nutjobs can't seem to get it through their heads that if the bad guys want to get guns, they're going to get guns. All gun control will effectively do is drastically decrease the amount of guns "good" people will have.

Ugh this whole thing is fucking sickening. They need to fucking torture the living shit out of the fuckers that did this law-abiding citizen style.

Everyone talks about this "he would have killed people without guns" - but show me an example in recent america when organized terrorism wasn't involved? Guns give lone wackadoos too much power, that is all. Knives? A group of heroes can overtake that! Semi-automatic weapons? Not so much- tragedy is pretty much likely. Access to guns in this country has to be questioned... Liberty? What does gun ownership have to do with liberty? Do we really think the british are itching to take us over again? I just don't get the logic - I don't see the appeal of owning a gun, at all. Maybe for self home-defense but semi-automatic guns and cop killer bullets? it's stupid, and I haven't heard a good argument post 1776. I can't smoke pot nor can gays get married, fuck all this "liberty" bull shit.

Simply another crazed opportunist.
With a personal collection of fully legal assault weapons.
Which always makes it all so much easier.
And no doubt probably a really nice guy, usually...
And what the hell is it with Colorado anyway???

I don't think when the 2nd amendment that they had in mind semi-automatic and automatic weapons. I'm tired of people posting that it isn't because of our gun laws when every last piece of statistical evidence shows that it is. Just look at our rates of death by guns compared to any other nation of our standing.

I will not deny that there are plenty of responsible gun owners. It is just that we have given the means for all sorts of nut jobs to go about doing things like this. Easily accessible weaponry in this country aids those who are not right in the head.

Edit: That being said, still a terrible event and I would not wish it upon anyone.

In my humble opinion, this and the other instances of mass shootings mentioned have one thing in common; that mental health care in the US (and probably elsewhere) is being overstigmatized and underutilized. The one thing all these assholes had in common is that they were filled with rage and self-loathing about their lives and circumstances. With no other outlet, they eventually turn guns on their peers and eventually themselves. The gun control debate and everything else is secondary to this issue. It's not about how they got the guns, it's about why they got them and why they used them. Every single fucking time this happens, we and the media scrutinize their lives with the benefit of hindsight and say "JESUS NO WONDER THIS HAPPENED. THIS DUDE WAS FUCKING CRAZY."

This incident has as much to do with gun control as it does pink elephants. This guy obviously wanted to hurt people. If he hadn't had access to guns he just would have used something else like homemade explosives, a car, or fire.

IMO Threads like this aren't the place to start the whole pro/against guns argument for the umpteenth billion time. This thread should be solely for information on the incident and to show respect to those who have died or have been injured and their families.

We can't talk about gun control when a theater full of people get shot up by a 24 year old who wasn't mentally fit to own guns? When else can we talk about gun control, Lord Sith Solo? I don't mean a bit of disrespect to the people who lost their lives, I frankly think it could have been avoided with sensible and fair regulations.

Again, show me when a lone wackadoo killed a mass amount of random people without a gun (and it wasn't organized terrorism)? McVeigh's the last time I can think of, and he had political targets.. Guns give crazies too much power and "they're fun!" isn't a good enough reason to keep them out of the hands of people without the training, IQs, and mental capacity to use them. I'm not saying guns should be wiped out - cops, the military, and others - of course.. Give them guns! That'll make taking out knife toting loonies real easy.

14 people are dead. Can we have a little respect in this thread?

We are getting a revised 12 person death count now.

I've asked myself that question far too many times.

Yes, people really bring babies to midnight movies.

I lament not taking my daughters to more movies at midnight when they were under 6 months.

Again, you're delusional if you think the "crazies" won't have guns if they outlaw guns in this country. All gun control is going to do is keep guns out of the hands of honest citizens. Like others are saying, the problem isn't the guns, it's the mental health of these people. But that's as far as I'll agree with them. Fuck rehabbing them, they need to be taken out of the gene pool.

Our economy stinks - people can't afford baby sitters. It still pisses me off, but I understand it (though bringing kids to Saw 19 is just bad parenting and not excusable)... I think there should be parent only showings but, since that's not the norm, I empathize with parents who can't afford to get out every once in a while otherwise. Me? As a new dad I just watch a ton of movies at home and am fortunate to have monthly date nights (because we can afford child care)

Take it to the P&N thread on this same news item. It does not belong in this thread.
