Campus firearms ban:
The shootings also renewed debate surrounding Virginia Tech's firearms ban. The university has a general ban on possession or storage of firearms on campus by employees, students, and volunteers, or any visitor or other third parties, even if they are concealed handgun permit holders.[116] In April 2005, a student permitted by the state to carry concealed handguns was discovered in possession of a concealed firearm while in class. While no criminal charges were filed, a university spokesman said the University had "the right to adhere to and enforce that policy as a common-sense protection of students, staff and faculty as well as guests and visitors".[117]

The kid legally carrying wasnt causing trouble for anyone.

Being it's private property I think the theater has the right to refuse service to anyone (aside from age/race/religion/handicap/etc discrimination of course)

I could be wrong though.

But being concealed, they would not know. Asking a friend who has his CCW, he said he is only legally supposed to not carry in Federal buildings, and schools. If a business asks to not do it, then he would not, but he said he can still conceal carry in a place like a mall/theater, IF no one asked him to remove it/himself.

This is why I dont like such policies. Nobody who's gone on a shooting spree bothers to attend the classes, get a background check, and legally carry a permit & gun.
If the other patrons had all been legally armed this asshole could have been put down in about 5 seconds.

Ditto the kid at Virginia Tech.

Most of these nutjobs are able to walk in with rifles/shotguns/geared to the teeth...insane they can get away with it.

Were there no cops at that mall/theather? Even our uppity ones have them.

I'm not against a CCW license. Don't misinterpret my point of view. I just find it incredibly silly that people claim that CCW carriers would be a cure-all to these sorts of instances. It's stupid. In order for that to happen you'd need them to be everywhere and make up a larger portion of the population due to the random nature of these crimes. But as soon as you include more people you're going to include more idiots, just like this guy.

People with CCW's aren't immune to idiotic behavior just because they carry a license. They're less prone to it, sure, but that changes as soon as you increase the volume and you're back at square one.

I'm a firm believer that it isn't the guns that are the problem but the people. To somehow state the CCW's aren't "people" but "super people" is fucking retarded.

And increasing the volume would do what, exactly? Maintain that success rate?

Simple probability. More CCW = more idiots with CCW. Just like more gun sales = more idiots with guns.

You are probably an idiot licensed driver... an idiot parent, and idiot at the office... See that wide brush I used there?

CCW is not the problem.

How the hell did this guy even get in the theatre with the gun?

Who's going to stop him? Someone much different from the 60+ people he shot in the theater?

And to think someone gave me shit about carrying in a theater a few weeks back (concealed, she found out after the fact).

I wouldn't say they would be the cure all, but at least the group would have had a chance...

The illusion that we live in the wild west... A hero will whip out his hand canon and save the day!! Ah huh, life is a movie.. Most will run regardless because that's human nature, and we don't need more of those Zimmerman's walking around, "protecting" us.

If one of the few who have a CCW was there. Clearly they weren't, so what then? Increase the # of people who have a CCW? That's not going to have an adverse effect?

It's not stupid people that are the problem, it's the fact that it's nigh impossible to pinpoint those stupid people. Evil and idiotic behavior are defining characteristics of human nature, thus it isn't "evil" that's the problem but rather just people.

CCW is not the problem.

You may want to reread my posts and find where I said that. In fact, I stated the opposite but you seem to be hell bent on arguing. I encourage you to reread my posts again, but this time perhaps a bit more thoroughly.

Rather than gun ownership the thing that strikes me about Americans is how angry you guys are.

The tales of road/consumer rage just on this forum are pretty shocking, and the way you guys act about political issues seems bizarre sometimes.

There's pretty much nothing you can do about gun ownership there, there's way too many of them sloshing around the population and it's not like there's an expiry date on them.

Just try, as a nation, not to take everything personally. That guy who you've never met, who's trying to pull in front of you isn't trying to insult you, he's just trying to get to work. Just let him in and move on with your day. The guy with different political/religious views to you didn't pick them as a criticism of yours, he just looks at the world differently. Just accept that different people like different things, it doesn't mean one of you is wrong.

In short, America you're an angry, angry country, it's time to chill out.

They confirmed he had NO CCW license, no hunting license, no licenses or permits of any kind. Just heard it on the news. Thought I'd post it so that you have one less thing to argue about.

Gun nuts and their guns. I'm sure this guy is a NRA supporter too. Makes me want to move to a country that doesn't have more guns than people.
Good. Take yourself and GTFO of the country.

Figures there's all this gun control political crap in this thread. We're still getting the details, and if you wanna talk politics just go to P&N. Fucking idiots.

On topic, heard this on NPR this morning on the way to work. Terrible news.

To sum up my thoughts:
2. Clearly the guy isn't sane. Media and political hacks around here will try to pin it on his political persuasion, gun control issues, violent video games or music, etc. None of that matters. The guy is batshit crazy regardless of his personal beliefs and his actions do not reflect on whatever groups he claimed membership of.

Yes, except he wouldn't have such easy means to massacre 12 dead and 38 injured without guns.

In most Asian countries where gun laws are SUPER strict and civilians don't have the right to bear arms, massacres like these by an individual just don't happen.

I still remember living in Korea, people reading about massacres of lone crazed gunman in US with awe and disbelief. That sort of thing is just unimaginable over there.

US has had massacres like these in the past (duh) and will continue to happen due to guns. Fvck, I mean, at my short time here we've already went through fvcking Columbine, one in MA, Virginia Tech, DC sniper, and now this.

Can ANYONE argue against this?

Most will. Some won't.

Yep. The dude reportedly had explosives in his house. He would've come up with a way. How many guns were involved in the Oklahoma City bombing? McVeigh was actually arrested for unlawfully carrying a weapon......that's how he was caught. We DO have gun laws. It's the people breaking them that are the problem.

I live here and actually what you said is very true. LOL, I just told Todd33 to GTFO the country (I wasn't being serious; when I say crap like that on here I'm not that mad and forget about it a minute later anyway). But I do agree with you. I've seen way too many people get way too bent out of shape over shit that ultimately DOES NOT MATTER.

Uhm, you dumbasses saying CCW would have stopped this, this guy was in a fucking dark lit theater, used a smoke grenade device, HAD ON BODY ARMOR AND AN ASSAULT RIFLE. Do you honestly believe someone with a concealed pistol would have stopped him?

He may be right in regard to the state he lives in, but other states have different laws about it. In my state, if the policy is clearly stated/posted I can not enter with my concealed firearm (The only type of carry allowed here) and if caught get charged with criminal trespass. Nice eh?

I'm sure this shooting was all in God's plan. Just like God planned Treyvon's death. :hmm:
