Architecture is primarily the design, AFAIK. Actual structural design is left to civil and structural engineers. At least when it comes to public works, you have to have your P.E/S.E. license to work on that sort of stuff

Yeah, the architects are just the celebrities who come up with weird ideas for how it should look, then take the credit after the civil engineers have done all the hard work of figuring out how to actually build the thing!

I like these images-

The roof structure shows us that it was constructed like boxes & rectangles standing side by side. The security camera footage we've all seen is from a street level vantage off to the lower left, showing us that the center & center right sections fell first, destabilizing the structurally dependent lower sections that fell a few seconds later.

I'm sure that there are a lot of aging condos all along there that suffer from or will suffer from similar issues of design & maintenance.

because FL will request FEMA emergency funds?

but that's socialism!!! well, the right type anyway. so it's all good! /S
Absolutely shouldn't be FEMA's problem. This is what insurance is for or let the city eat the cost of rescue personnel.

An architect still has a lot of structural education and, depending on the situation, will do, leverage a lot of existing processes, or work closely with the engineers on the structure. But yes sign off by the engineers is still required for large scale works.

To get my BA in architecture I had 2 years of physics, 2 years of general structure courses, 1 semester of construction and 1 semester large scale engineering. I got pretty good at calculating point loads, shear forces etc. A licensed architect has to have a masters with even more education. Not comparing education to a structural engineer just noting there is a fair amount of engineering education for architects

sweet deal. i was always under the impression that it was more the artistic side of building design.

Surfside mayor seems like a pretty sensible fellow except for one thing. He bristles when someone says they are doing anything other than a rescue operation. He wants people to assume everyone missing is alive. I'd lay even odds easily they don't find any living humans under that rubble. It's been 10 days, and "rescue" operations are currently suspended. They laid tarps on the rubble prior to bringing down the remainder of the complex.

What was left standing coming down-

Did the residents get to retrieve any of their stuff beforehand? Or is that a naive question (on the basis that it would have been far too dangerous to let anyone in there to do that)? Would be quite rough to watch your home and all your possessions be collapsed into rubble, but I suppose that might have been the only option by that point.

I don't think someone in that position wants to casually dismiss people's family members as definitively dead. I don't think you want to do that until it's conclusively-proven. Why would you not want to afford people hope? To me it would seem callous for him to write people off as deceased at this point.

Perhaps. Still, seeing video of him jacking up people's hope struck me as absurd and uncalled for. I've seen several people interviewed who are close to people who went down with the structure and the great majority say they figure there's almost no hope they'll ever see those people alive again. And most of those videos were done a week or more ago. It's not going to get easier, it's gonna take a long time to find all the bodies. I'd be surprised if they don't find a fair number more than they expect.

There was no opportunity for them to get anything.

Honestly , seems a difficult call, to me. Sometimes (only sometimes, mind!)I think politicians have a difficult job.

This engineer explains it very differently from what the news is saying.
Well, it certainly is a compelling conspiracy theory . Thank you for linking it.

( I watched the whole thing, but I am wary of YouTube, things can be very persuasive and completely wrong )

I mostly agree with you; giving people false hope isn't going to end well. One of the FEMA personnel (spokesperson?) interviewed a couple days ago handled it well IMO. She said regardless of the name of the operation, the mission is to return missing people to their families. It acknowledges the reality of the situation without getting into a debate about how realistic it is to find someone alive.

It’s a 30 minute video what is the gist of his analysis?
I watched the whole thing, it's analysis of the available visual evidence with the building plans of the garage. If you watch the last few minutes, that's about all you'll need to know as he summarizes his theory. Basically, due to some design flaws, standing water was slowly seeping into the concrete base around the center of the complex. It's likely that the rebar had rusted and the concrete supporting the building had deteriorated to a point of failure (beginning near the center). He also pointed out that the support beams for the part of the building that was still standing were thicker than the rest.

So there really isn't any conspiracy theory; he's just saying that the root cause of the collapse wasn't the pool itself and that makes sense since the pool is at the corner of the property and remained intact. The flat design of the entire pool deck was likely the root cause, as predicted by the 2018 engineering report.

So no reason to watch it since all of that has been in the news for the last several days.

Thanks! Sounds like a reasonable take on it.

The news hasn't shown the support differences in the parking garage like he pointed out using another engineering firms diagram and how the collapse follows the edge of their change.
