eTrex Handheld GPS recievers are about the size of a small cell phone.

The eTrex Legend model is normally twice the price of the base eTrex model because it includes "a full basemap of North and South America"

Here are some vendors:

$169.90 Discount Jungle ($119.90 after rebate)

$171.00 Electroline($121.00 after rebate)

$184.98 HotBuysElectronics($134.98 after rebate)

$199.99 Amazon.com($149.99 after rebate)

You could also pricematch with a vendor like Botach Tactical who claim to rebate the price difference. Currently they price this model at $249. You may email or call them first to se if they'll sell you for the lower price up front.

Once you got your GPS, make sure you head over to geocaching.com for some fun . . .

This is a great unit. I think I paid $200 AR less than a year ago. Very handy. The base maps are not the best, but I was able to upload all of Phoenix, and several other major cities I visit with plenty of room to spare. The add-on maps I believe come with their mapping software (not included).

I dont suppose this comes with a street level map CD?

Is this better than a Magellan 330?

FYI...

My friend just got this...

Staples.com or Phone order has this item.
$249.98 (staples Price)
-54.99 (110% PM to amazon.com, you can try diffrent places to PM but staples is getting really picky)
-$30 off $150 coupon
---------------
164.99 + Tax
-$50 Garmin MIR
Net $115 + taxes

If you can get Staples to PM Discount Jungle which I find highly unlikely, you could net $82 AR + taxes.

I got this same unit about a month ago through staples (with PMing and Coupon, and a gift card) for about $80 AR (which fyi I have not recieved the MIR after about a month), I have to admit this unit is very cool, just wish it had a built in compass to make finding Geocashes easier.

I just got this a few days ago (from another hot deal) and it's really great! My only gripe is that the software (to get more road detail & topo detail for hiking) is expensive!

Are there any alternatives?

btw, the legend doesn't come with a compass but it does have one in software. It has a screen with a compass graphic that's based on movement so it's still pretty accurate.

Which units are better, Garmin or Magellan?

What's the cheapest unit I can get with a true compass, basemap, and WAAS?

Thanks.

oktane: I believe the eTrex Legend would be the cheapest unit with all those features you described.

Garmin is better recognized than Magellan in the aviation/marine/handheld industry.

it has very limited internal memory for very detailed maps. It only contains like major roads and highways. I suggest getting some sort of DVD based navigation or a Pocket PC with navigation software connected to the Legend

The Camo model can be found for $120 without rebate numerous places.

If you are looking for a built in compass you may want to look at the eTrax Vista model.

$220 eTrex Vista
-50 MIR From Garmin
---------------------------
$170. Half Price

For the money the Legend is the better deal even though it doesn't have a compass.

Where do you see the Vista for $220? I can only find it for $299

Thanks.

Joony,

It looks like the legend does not have a real compass. It is just a software compass. The "Vista" version has the real compass and altimeter built in. The benefit of a real compass is that you don't have to be moving for the thing to update your vector.
