seems like a good deal, but none of the $30 codes that I found work.

Based on the look of the original post, I would guess that it was cut and paste verbatim from a site that allows coupon codes. Do a search and see what you find...

I seem to recall discussion over at chubby wallet that most if not all of the $30 off 150 coupons were for phone orders only. That is why online wouldn't take it and the need for a phone call.

I just gave this deal a shot. I've been watching this forum and cubby wallet for a while and seem to have missed most of the smoking hard disk deals.

I called in (to Staples). The CSR requested a phone number or account number. I hadn't ordered before, so I gave her my account information. She asked about the catalog and I made up something convenient. I don't if the catalog is ever a sticking point or not, but she was leaving in fifteen minutes and sounded happy to proceed with my order.

I found a $30 off $150 phone coupon at CW that worked.

The final total was $127.28 including $7.21 in tax.

FAR Spam killer ($20 MIR) and $50 MIR for the Maxtor 120GB 2MB cache brings it down to $57.28. That should be $0.48/GB, which is decent. Not as sweet as some of the other deals I missed. These days I won't pay more than $0.50/GB, after buying my first 120GB for $100. (Oops.)

I tried getting in on the Dell 15% + 15% a few weeks ago, but like many they canceled my order. When I emailed a CSR at Dell about that one he said they'd reinstate it without the extra 15% off that was the result of a 'system bug'. I never bothered to have it reinstated.

One question I do have:

The MIR for the Maxtor is a Staples MIR. It mentions a receipt. Will I get one with my phone order, or do I need to go to a store and have someone print me one? Normally I just receive packing slips when I order stuff online. (It just occurred to me I don't even have an email receipt for this.)

The packing slip or invoice you get should be fine...that's what I sent in with my 80G Maxtor rebate.

peronally, i wouldn't any $$ on a hdd unless it had an 8mb buffer, just seems pointless. i have a feeling a good deal for the summer is coming up soon......hopefully.

I can understand wanting an 8MB cache, but in my case I don't need it. I just want the raw storage capacity. It's being used solely as a backup device. I won't need fast sequential access. Moreover, a large cache is useless for random access.

I would like to score one of those 160GB+ drives with an ATA controller card. I'm running out of ports and I don't want to cough up the cash for a 3Ware Escalade card yet.

If you don't receive yoru packing slip, you can always call them and have them either mail you or fax you the receipt. I did that when they neglected to send me the slip.

why go to all this trouble? why not just get the HD with the $20 off $100 coupon. $60 after rebate sounds better than $50 after two rebates and some sh*t software i don't need.

Then it'd be more than $0.50/GB after tax.

I haven't had any problems with rebates yet. I bet I'll get my cheque eventually.
