Anyone noticed that BestBuy.com is backordered on the drives now? I wonder if those of us who get an in-store order to ship from the .com will have a better chance of getting an 8MB drive?

How many more 2MB drives does Maxtor have sitting in a warehouse.. they've already been replacing them with 8MB ones, so we'll see....

Well i tried to order 2 online last night and never got the 99.99 price drop so i cancelled the order, and today when i went into the store they were at 179.99.

But i some calling and got 2 reserved for me about an hour away from work so I'm gonna see if they ring up at 99.99, and if not, i've got he CompUSA ad to try and pricematch too.

But it's too late, I grabbed it immediately. I still remember when they stared at me with an angry look. Anyway, I brought the 10% off coupon too so the total came to 89.99 plus tax, what a great deal. I still haven't opened it yet, but the box has a light blue and blue label that says 33% faster, I hope it's a 8mb drive. (someone confirm?) On Monday, I called Cambridge, Landmark Center, Watertown and Dedham and all of them don't have it in stock!!! So I tried to pricematch CompUSA and they said that BestBuy has switched the price to 179.99 and that was only a speical one day sale! Since I can't get 2 120gb for my raid setup, maybe i should sell this to my friend and get the wd200gb for 220 - 10% instead

YOU BASTARD!!!

I was there this afternoon and the three idiot droids all looked like they just came from the factory with a blank stare on their face. All three don't remember the drive being $99 yesterday. Wish they would answer their phones and save me the hour drive to get there.

I'm just surprised nobody is really trying to pricematch at Staples or another store that carries maxtor. I wish circuit city carried Maxtor.

PMing Staples at this point wouldn't work so hot now that the price has been corrected or the stock has been pulled off the floor. Also, for those saying there are none on the floor, did you look up top? Usually they have more up there.

I have to disagree. I just came back not too long ago and was able to pricematch for another drive with no hassle.

For those of you that somehow missed 'this' info, I will briefly rehash...

8MB cache = 60GB = PY62
8MB cache = 120GB = PY63

Your first indication you have an 8MB cache is to look at the front, round label. The lable is two shades of blue with white trim and lettering and... 33% Faster in black lettering.

If you find these anywhere you should buy them. If for some reason you cannot PM, or whatever, just take them back. But, if you do not get them while you have the chance, someone else will surely get them.

Oh, yeah, update... still plenty of 120 2MB cache drives in Houston, but is definitely lower than yesterday. Sooooo.

Edit...
Also, that 'round' section applies to the 60GB's also. That will tell you that you will probably have Max Plus 9 inside. L6Y2

"..., I am not sure why they brought the price back up so quick. "

Think of it as a kind of corporate "shot across the bow" - basically, corporate Best Buy was telling corporate CompUSA that they weren't real happy with CompUSA's "pricing scheme" on this harddrive. Best Buy knew that the "tech savy" buyers would reverse pricematch Best Buy's $99.99 price at CompUSA, which when combined with the $60.00 in mail-in rebates ($30.00 coming directly from CompUSA's pocket) would place these drives well below cost. It's the equivalent of returning a corporate 'low-blow'.

Best Buy is not losing a dime , I am not sure why they brought the price back up so quick.

just got back from bestbuy in oceanside, ca...none in stock....so went to compusa and got that deal instead. I

Bestbuy $99 + $7.75 tax = $107.74
Compusa $159.99 + $12.40 tax = $172.32 - $60 mir rebates = $112.38....

so when I get my rebates I'm only paying $4.64 more. I don't feel too bad cuz I got in that deal with dell $73 for IBM 80GB 7200rpm free shipping no tax a couple months ago.

Anyone know of a cheap external firewire case. The one at compusa was $69.99...wow...too expensive.

So is this deal still alive and doable? If BB rised the price back up to 179 how am I suppose to PM it to the other stores like staples, compusa, etc.

Thanx

Why, oh, why do you scan into a PDF? What advantages does that give over a JPG? It certainly makes the file MUCH bigger and the hassle MUCH greater having to use acrobat to look at it.

Yes, I'm nitpicking.

The information below on the 60GB Maxtor harddrive is incorrect. The 60GB drives are only being produced as fluid-bearing 2MB versions (L6Y2 - I own several) and 8MB Serial ATA (SATA) versions (M6Y2 - when they become available). Maxtor [currently] has no plans to produce the 60GB drive with the 8MB cache (P6Y2). Please check your information before posting....

K-squared, maybe you should check your reading comprehension skills. JK

Look back and see what I wrote... "Max Plus 9", "L6Y2".

BTW, good info you posted earlier.

Edit...
But, I can see where someone might misunderstand.

Change...
"Also, that 'round' section applies to the 60GB's also. That will tell you that you will probably have Max Plus 9 inside. L6Y2"
to
Also, that 'round' section applies to the 60GB's also. That will tell you that you will probably have Max Plus 9 inside. L6Y2 But, it will be a 2MB cache drive.

I simply meant the round label is an indication it is the newer 60GB drive. That is why I made sure to put the L6Y2.

Edit...
OK, I see something else though, sorry I am slightly dyslexic.

8MB cache = 60GB = PY62 should be P6Y2
8MB cache = 120GB = PY63 should be P6Y3
Did 'my brain' get it right that time? ;-) Haha, you missed that one.

Has anyone contacted CompUSA about both rebates needing the original UPC? I plan on sending the original UPC to Maxtor and a copy of it CompUSA.

I only scan into .pdf files because I don't have access to a scanner where I can make jpegs. We have a xerox copier here that scans directly to .pdf. It's more convenient for me

Houston, update...

there is only one BB store that reports having the 120GB drives. There are 4 left. The Katy store. The manager said he will sell them $99.99 out the door.

Edit...
But, they show $179.99 on the computer, so the CompUSA to BB PM will not work. (Of course, you can try.)

How long does BestBuy take to process web orders "to be picked up in store"? I placed a three orders
yesterday, for one drive apiece, to each of the three local Best Buys. I figured maybe I'd catch one
fish that way (all three are out of stock). This morning, I got two emails from one store: 1) saying (first email)
that they were out of stock, and that I could request the drive be mailed for free (but, as the
person I called told me, only a the much higher web price); and 2 (second email) saying
that my order was cancelled.

I received my original confirmations from the other two orders, but those two orders are still (6:49pm next
day) listed as "in process"...Is that a good sign, or just a sign that BestBuy hasn't gotten around to cancelling
them?

YMMV on that one. It worked that way for me. I just gave someone my receipt at work to try and do the same. I am tempted to try Compusa but I NEVER have good luck there.
