Yes, this is a good question. I am wondering the same also.
The only way to know is to try it. The Staples receipt is a result of a price match against Best Buy. Each store handles things differently - as well as different people within each store handle things differently. Your mileage varies by location -- give it a try and let us know how it works out. The only reason why so many deals have worked out (e.g. - matching the BB price back over at CompUSA, etc.) is because someone had BALLS enough to try it. Sitting at home in front of your computer speculating what may or may not work is NOT productive. You've got to take the scans out to your local store and get busy. Also, as we've witnessed with how Best Buy handled this drive situation, getting out there the earlier proves to be the better move. BB quickly pulled the price of $99 after only 24 hours on this drive. Last week, several people received cheap 80 GB Maxtor drives - some as low as $65 before any rebates. These deals were achieved earlier in the week. As the week progressed, Staples became aware of a pattern that was starting to form and then started to really scrutinize the price matches quite a bit closer. Again, please, please, please head to your store and see what they'll do in regards to matching the price.

I only scan into .pdf files because I don't have access to a scanner where I can make jpegs. We have a xerox copier here that scans directly to .pdf. It's more convenient for me
Puhleaze! Why can't you be happy with what muffstah had provided for us??? As I recall, the file was only 82K or somehing and not much larger than a .JPG or .GIF would have been. So, to please people in the future, we should provide scans in .BMP, .PCX, .TIFF, .RAW, .GIF, .JPG, .JPEG formats? I have a feeling it ain't gonna happen. This network of people here at Anandtech are a great community of people to be a part of. Take what you can get. If you don't like what's provided, then either provide something better for us or STFU. It's as simple as that.

KwadGuy: Did a web order pickup, mine is OOS at the B&M too. Called the 800 number, and said I want it shipped to me. She placed order and gave me the $179.99 web price. Told her my order price was only $99. They said they'll ship it for $179.99 since there is no way to override it, but immediately credit my CC account w/ the difference. Obtained a case number from the CSR to follow up.

OK, based on all your experiences, I called again and got someone on the phone who was willing
to replace the order and open a "case" to refund the difference between my order price ($179) and the
price when I ordered yesterday ($100).

HOWEVER, the woman I spoke to said she CAN'T GUARANTEE they will actually refund the difference.
She said opening a case (and she gave me a case number) doesn't mean that you will actually
get the refund...Grrr...I guess if they don't refund the difference, I'll have to return them to BestBuy
locally.

Oh, and she said they're backordered and won't be in stock to ship for "at least a week".

Some reason, I'm not very optimistic about it.
Well, I probably have to return it locally.
By the way, mine is shipped today.

I bought the 120gb 2mb version at BB, and took the receipt to CompUSA for a pricematch. After only a little discussion about how the BB price was before any rebates (yeah, I know they aren't offering any but I never said that they were) CompUSA agreed to price match the before rebate price.

I ended up getting the drive from CompUSA for $99-$30MIR-$30MIR = $39!!!!

I then took the BB drive back for return and saw they had an open box one for $139. I pointed out that I had just bought an unopened one for $99, so they marked it down to $89!!!

So...... 120GB + 120GB for $128!!!!

That works out to $0.53/GB. I never thought I'd ever see that kind of pricing!

All in all, worth the 2 hours or so it took me to pull all this off.

These will triple the capacity of both of my new HDVR2 DirectTivos.

How cool is that?

Holy crap! Nice dealing! I just got back from BB picking up my 8MB cache one for $95 including tax. Not to bad, I am happy with that!

120GB retail kits - kits that have the new DiamondMax Plus 9 "Ultra series" harddrive (8MB memory cache), have the "new" ATA-133 sticker on the box (temporary product substitution) - four-digit code (P6Y3).

60GB retail kits - kits that have the relatively new DiamondMax Plus 9 harddrives (2MB memory cache, fluid-bearing motor) can have *either* type of
ATA-133 sticker - hence why it is important to look at the four-digit code - look for (L6Y2).

In any event, the harddrive that's inside the box can only reliably be identified by the four-digit code on the side-panel harddrive spec-label.

Look back and see what I wrote... "Max Plus 9", "L6Y2".

BTW, good info you posted earlier.

Edit...
But, I can see where someone might misunderstand.

Change...
"Also, that 'round' section applies to the 60GB's also. That will tell you that you will probably have Max Plus 9 inside. L6Y2"
to
Also, that 'round' section applies to the 60GB's also. That will tell you that you will probably have Max Plus 9 inside. L6Y2 But, it will be a 2MB cache drive.

I simply meant the round label is an indication it is the newer 60GB drive. That is why I made sure to put the L6Y2.

Edit...
OK, I see something else though, sorry I am slightly dyslexic.

8MB cache = 60GB = PY62 should be P6Y2
8MB cache = 120GB = PY63 should be P6Y3
Did 'my brain' get it right that time? ;-) Haha, you missed that one.

Am I being too simplisit here? If you have an order acknowledgment showing the $99.99 price, and they later fill that order charging $179.99 - wouldn't that be easy to contest with your credit card company? And if they cancel the original order and will only replace the order at the higher price, isn't that Bait-and-Switch????

In my opinion Staples is threading into dangerous waters. They agree on a price and later recant, charging more. This happened to me last week when I pricematched a 512MB stick of PC133 memeory to Buy.com. They left a message at work stating that there was an error and that the PM price would be $119... and if I didn't called them back by the end of the day they would charge my CC. WTF??? This is clearly illegal because there is no way for them to assume anything without me telling them specifically (specially on a money matter). This borders on fraud. It isn't my fault that they either don't train their staff or don't have clear operational procedures regarding these matters. We need to unite against these bull$$hit games and maybe get a class-action suit filed by several hundred AT'ers to stop this abuse. I spoke with my father (an attorney) about this and he agreed that this point would probably hold up in court. Call it misrepresentation, bait and switch, etc. it is illegal. Let's unite and stop it now.

Yeah, I have only the reference no with me to show they agreed to adjust price, and I don't think I have any leverage for them not to honor the lower price, since the store where I was supposed to pickup didn't have the drive any more(or at least not at the price). Question is how strong a case I can make with CC company with the reference number. Well, I have to wait for few days to see if they put the credit back.

wth BB! I ordered online for instore pick-up. Got my email confirmation that it was available. Went instore today to pick it up, after about 15min, guy says they don't have it. What the freak! He doesn't know why i got an email confirm. when they don't even have the drive.

Wellz, went home and called bestbuy.com to see what's the deal. The CSR said that she could cancel the order, place a new order for $179, and then charge my CC back the $80 when it ships. But its on backorder now, so thats 5-6 days she'd say b4 it ships, and since its ground shipping, thats another 8-10 days :| ! God dam bestbuy! I commented that that's a LONG time, the CSR said i can choose next-day shipping for an extra $8, fock that! Alkso asked if i could use my 10% off coupon, she said they can't. ARGH!! not so hot anymore! Was suppose to get the drive today with 10% coupon, now is ONLY warm.

Well tried to get CompUSA to match my BB instore pick-up paper, but they said "if you placed the order online, we can't match that. The price they will PM is the price that rings up at the register, and the item must be in stock" Neither of these are true anymore. BB is OOS, and the price is back @ $179.

Sometimes it pays to buy early....

Since late October, I have purchased four (4) of the Maxtor 120GB harddrives (prior to this deal). One was already past the price guarantee period so on that one I was SOL. The remaining three were from Staples (1) and Best Buy (2) and all had rebates associated with their purchase ($130 total)....

So imagine my delight yesterday when in bouncing between here and FW, threads pop-up on both forums about the 120GB Maxtor deal. I rounded-up the receipts, jump in the car and race into [AnyTown, USA] with an additional $220 in-pocket. Results, pricematched the drive at Staples ($70+ returned to credit card), net cost after the Business Rewards coupon originally used and $30 mail-in rebate will be less than $20 including tax (the other item was the 512MB PNY memory pricematched against Buy.com ). Oh, that's right, the harddrive WILL BE FREE, after the $20 gift check for purchases of $150 or more and PNY $50 rebate ! ! ! ! :Q :Q :Q :Q

Next it was on to Best Buy....

Both of these harddrives had $50.00 mail-in rebates and one had already been pricematched to CompUSA's $159.99 price from a few weeks back. I got $60+ and $65+ back on the drives. Net price for both drives after rebate, approx. $97+ after tax. Damn, just noticed I was only given 100-percent, not 110-percent (hmmm, there's another $12+ !)....

And since I was in the neighborhood, I stopped by BAM (Books-A-Million) and picked-up the Nov 18th issue of Sport Illustrated, for the 10-percent off Best Buy coupon (which I've already used once). They couldn't figure the coupon out, so they scanned it before scanning each harddrive (I decided to get three (3) more). End price was $89.99 - roughly $290 after tax.

So, I now have 720GB (6-120GB) of new Maxtor harddrives for roughly $383 with tax, after rebates; or .53/GB for 720MB of harddrive space. Wonder if I should go back after that additional 10-percent they forgot last night, that would make it .51 per GB....

hmmm.... decisions, decisions.....

Oh, did I mention that five of the six were the 8MB versions....????

tee hee hee

Thanx to this board, this morning I drove down to my BB and saw like 10 drives left and all have the blue label, I grabbed all of them and when checking out, show them the CompUSSR ads. At first the cashier tried to argue about the PM, but then I asked her for her MOD, and after convincing the MOD he let her ringed them all up at $99.99, then BHAM I pulled the 10% off coupon and got them all for only $89.99 x 10 x tax
whoooooo now I gotta sell someofthem on ebay

---------------------------------------------------------------------
then I woke up and realize that's all just a dream, man... I can't believe I'm being greedy in my dream

It just keeps getting better...checked the model numbers of my two drives and turns out they both have 8MB cache, even though the box said 2MB. Two matched drives. Perfect.

I got a raincheck in the King Of Prussia, PA, store (BB B&M).
They still had the shelf tag on the shelf, no drives left. So I asked for a raincheck and customer service said no raincheck because this was not an advertised special.
So I went to the computer department and the guy wrote me a raincheck for $99. They'll get more drives in on Wednesday, he said. For what price, he didn't know, but that's where my raincheck will come in handy.

They pulled the shelf tag after I got the raincheck, though.
