IT seems that maxtor did not have the right packaging for the harddrives when it first came out. IThe new 8mb ones are supposed to be package in the box that looks like this. But, it's all good. Wonder if they will be getting any more soon. Went to all the stores in my county and only bestbuy stocked the 120Gb ones. OD, OM and CC were willing to PM it but did not have the correct size.

This is sort of pushing things at least in my opinion. And typically, they mark up your original receipt indicating a return when you do so. It seems logical that if a rebate processing center were to see this marked up receipt, well, that would be obvious grounds for denying the rebate.

If I am not mistaken, CompUSA gives seperate rebate reciepts? I haven't gone there is a long time so I don't really know. I just have it in my mind that a lot of stores give seperate rebate reciepts now.

This is more than a bit of "pushing the envelope". It is an attempt to commit fraud.
If you were caught, they could, in theory, convict you of a FELONY. They probably
wouldn't, but from time-to-time they prosecute cases like this to make an example.

Are you really willing to risk a FELONY conviction for $60? Most felons with half a brain
wouldn't...

Not to mention that this is why employees love to give us a hard time when trying to get deals.

Hehe I don't think most felons would be able to float $260 in HDD to make $60 But yah, these types of actions are to be frowned upon

I am glad you're not doing this because you'd screw someone else who might buy your returned drive, and may not be eligible for the rebate, thus paying full price and having rebate hassles. I really hope nobody goes this far.

Has anybody seen a review of the 8meg version of this drive? I'ld like to see if Maxtor's claim of 33% faster comes close to reality, or maybe what an independent review gives for benchmarks on this drive. It does seem fast.

The "33% Faster " claim is in reference to the ATA/133 standard over the ATA/100 standard....

Maxtor claims on their website, that the DiamondMax Plus Ultra Series drives are 20-percent faster than the 2MB versions.

Yes it just drops to ATA 100 and jesh guys , you are not happy with 90 bucks for 200 dollars drive and suggestion about commiting fraud is really out of the order. And also if you believe it or not i seen it my own eyes without any benchmarks and going from ata100 60gb 7200 rpms 2mb cache drive to ata133 8mb 120gb hdd is noticable.

It does not matter. The current sustained transfer rate does not even break ATA66 standards.

That's a "up to 20% faster" and only in "Winbench 99 Business Disk" benchmark. While I won't deny that 8MB cache is better than 2MB, it's certainly not 20% faster across the board.

Or probably even ATA33!

Actually, they did break ATA33. If you can get a HDD to sustain 45mb/s, that would be good.

No question that with few exceptions (and most of them outside normal operation
for the average user), UDMA66 is good enough for any currently available drive.

The big exception is for people who are running IDE raid...Those UDMA66 IDE raid
cards WILL be a bottleneck for today's fastest drives...Better to get a UDMA100
or better card in such a case.

How do you figure that? Are you implying that they track rebates via the Hard Drive's serial#? I don't see that info on my receipts.

Also, what's the difference between doing what ANY5546 suggests and all the "double-dipping" where people are sending in 2 and 3 copies of a UPC when the rebate form specifically says "original UPC"? How is this scenario more likely to result in some kind of felony charge than doing that? And people brag about doing that here all the time.

Spoke to a guy at the BB here in VA where the drive was $99. The price was increased to $179 again. He did tell me that the WD 75 Gb drives "might" be a black friday special with either an instant or mail in rebate...but, I only heard that and cannot confirm it or which store I was at.

On the CompUSA deal, both rebates require the ORIGINAL UPC. What gives? Their "$99.99" price is impossible to get, you can only get 1 $30 rebate.

Harry K, yes the serial # of the hard drive is on the Compusa reciept, and the the original packaging UPC bar code!!! And both compusa and maxtor rebates say "Compusa Purchase Only".

This is interesting...This morning, I got an email telling me the store I ordered the $99 hard
drive from was out of stock...Now, I just checked, and that order shows up on the Website as
"on order". It seems they automatically transferred the order from pickup to ship...That would be cool,
as the good price ($99) still shows...I wonder if this is just a website glitch...

got the same thing here, I asked a bb csr about the drives coming in and having the same $99 price, he just gave me a sly smile and said try to come back on Friday morning. I am getting up for this.
