Well I got to CompUSA early this morning and picked up a drive. Payed $179 for it and put my 2 rebates in the mail early. It's the 120 GB, 2 mb buffer. I'm pretty pissed that I could've just gone to Best Buy and gotten the same thing without rebates, possibly an 8 mb too. Is there anyway I can pricematch down to $99.99 at CompUSA where I bought my drive? Also, what are the pricematch requirements...receipt, UPC code (already sent this)? Thanks.

Well, it looks like Maxtor may have done this AGAIN!

The other evening I purchased (another) 120GB Maxtor, effectively getting the harddrive for $100 after coupon and rebate. In looking through their pickings (ie. stock of harddrives available in-store), I noticed that some of the 120GB have a "New and Improved !" ATA/133 sticker on the front lower right corner of the retail box.

I look on the side of the retail box for the four-digit code which tells you what kind of drive is inside the box (harddrive's performance information placard). And there below and right of the UPC are those four, beautiful, letters:

P6Y3

and I'm thinking to myself.... "P6Y3"..... aren't the new drives with 8MB caches supposed to be L01Pxxx drives? (L01P120 for the 120GB 8MB cache version)
? Nah, couldn't be, they wouldn't do that.... Besides, the kit number is L01J120 and the UPC matches the other UPCs for harddrives labeled with the L6Y3 code (DiamondMax Plus 9, 2MB cache, fluid-bearing motor).


So on a hunch, I bought the drive.

Out in the car,.... carefully work open the retail box.... and there it is, below the bar code for the serial number....

6Y120P0

I'll be a son-of-a-...., it's the 8MB cache version - in the 2MB version retail box.


So, you know what that means????

You should be able to go back down there with your receipts and have a CSR call Best Buy and they should credit you back your money. As long as its within 14 days and you have a local best buy with the drive in stock.

But I dont see Best buy reason. if you look at compusa ad it says 179.99-20 instant- maxtor rebate-30 mail in rebate. Isnt the most they could pm is 129.99 since all they can match is compusa rebate and the instant savings? i didnt think they could take off as well as the maxtor rebate?

There are two $30 rebates, but BOTH require a receipt from CompUSA. Nice try, but it won't work. The only way you'll get this below $99 is to get CompUSA to match BB's price before rebates.

120GB = $99/120=$.83/GB

Not only does the price per gig make the 120GB sweeter, there are NO MIR's to deal with and you may just get the 8MB version.

I also found out that it wasn't "hard" for them to run out...being that each of those stores had like 2, 1, and 3 (respectively). The Westminster one had 2, and the employee took one of them. So no one cleared the shelf or anything like the other stores....

My experiences: went to one BB store that was right across the street from CompUSA - and those BB 120GB drives were out of stock, but the shelf tags were on display for $99.99. CSR asked if he could help me - I said "Yes, got any more of those 120GB drives for $99?". He said "No, but come back a couple of days later and we'll have more". I walked out thinking that I'll come back later on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to check.

Then I decided to go by another Best Buy on the way home. The 120GB drive was selling for $179.99. Told the CSR to check the price - it checked at $179.99. I asked him to call the other store. Waited on hold for 10 minutes - the guy on the line supposedly told him that they didn't have it for $99.99 - nor could they find the shelf tag! The same tag that I had seen 10 minutes ago! - hey, did "youse AT guys" have to take BOTH of the shelf tags!

Anyway, then the CSR agrees to sell it to me at $99.99 IF I produce the shelf tag. I hop back into the car and go try to find the shelf tags. I look in the BB trash cans for the shelf tags - BOY, this HotDeals forums are transforming me into a low-rent BUM! ROFL

No dice, could not find any shelf tags - so I guess one of you all took the tags to CompUSA or something to PM it!

After all this BS, I decide to go order it online for instore pickup - and I got the same $358 for two drives - then the confirmation email advised that it was adjusted from the "Web price of $179.99":

Nice work!!!!! - It's nice to see that there's a direct correlation between the 4-digit code on the outside of the box on the white label as to what's on the inside of the box. Hey maybe we could coin the term "Maxtor Inside" -- no, no, no, too much like Intel Inside.

For those of you that are frustrated with your CompUSA purchases, there is nearly the same chance that you could receive an 8 MB cache version as if you had purchased the drive from Best Buy. Clearly, Maxtor had shifted their processing at some point on the drives and resorted to a labeling system of 4-digit codes to tell the drives apart. If anyone is heading to CompUSA or Staples to do some price-matching, print out the section where K-Squared found all of the codes. Sift through the drives on the shelf to see if you can find the "gem" in the stack and get an 8 MB version. Happy huntin'.

With that being said, I have a drive waiting at my local BB store for $99.## plus tax. You can be sure I'll be there when the store opens so I can get the drive. The last time I ordered something for "in-store" pickup, BB didn't have the item set aside like I had imagined, but just went over and pulled it off the shelf. If their current model of handling pick-ups has not changed, then there's nothing stopping anyone from picking up the drive that should be "my" drive.

Now, I want to make a simple prediction. I'll bet by Friday (11/29/2002), this thread has 800 posts in it. This deal is quite hot -- and with the possibility of price matching BB back over at Staples or CompUSA, the deal is bound to get even hotter.

I guess it all depends on how accurate their inventory system is. Many of us will find out in 6 or so hours whether it's accurate when we show up at the store and there's plenty of drives waiting for us. If not, then we'll know. Then, there's always the option of having the manager come up with some sort of subsitution for us. Personally, I know my local store has a 2 mb WD drives with the exception of the 200 GB drive which is an 8 MB version. So, I wouldn't be too quick to accept a 2 MB WD model as a replacement - when there's a good chance that the Maxtor could have been an 8 MB model.

Just picked up the last 1 in Moreno Valley Best Buy. I really needed more for my file sever (already out of space on my other 900gigs) so I checked online and it showed San Bernardino Best Buy had 7!!!! I ran over there as quick as possible and got them all. 6 of them are 8 meg chache the other 2 are 2 meg but I'm happy. Thanks for the deal guys. And before people bitch I needed all these drives desperately.
