Good deal for cheap storage! Although performance nuts will want 7200RPM...

<edit> Okay, so most people are getting 7200! Dang, talk about ironic. Must resist... </edit>

Its only a 5400rpm but its great for upgrading a TIVO or REPLAYTV which is what I got it for.

I just purchased one today. I was happy to find out that inside the box was a blue piece of paper stating that the hard drive was not a 5400rpm, but a 7200rpm.

Wooooooohooooooooo!

SliderBob,
Any mention of the 7200rpm on the outside of the box?

Ouch, I just opened my WD1000BB from Best Buy ($99 after $20 MIR). I put it aside for a week deciding if I needed it or not. Already cut off the UPC label but have not mailed it in yet. Replaced a 30GB Maxtor I got last year. :disgust:

Mainstream drives -----------5400 rpm-------WD1200AB. CC price is $129.99 w/ $20 MIR
High-Performance drives----7200 rpm-------WD1200BB. CC price is $249.99

So geting a 7200 rpm 120GB drive for this price is not bad at all.

This forum is making me broke. :frown:

I remember when WD sold the 18GB 5400rpm drives and on the oustide, it said 18GB, but when you opened the box, there was a piece of paper that said 'we gave you 2 extra GB for free.' So I ended up with a 20GB drive instead of an 18. So, this doesn't suprise me that sliderbob got the note saying 7200 instead of 5400. Then again, it would make no sense for WD to do that since they could sell the 7200's for a lot more money. Hmmmm...

Myself and two friends ended up buying 3 of these today. All were labeled 5400rpm on the box but two actually contained 7200rpm drives. The third is a 5400rpm drive. All 3 were purchased at the same time at the same store. I'd say it's the luck of the draw. Fortunately the third guy wanted the drive for his Tivo so doesn't care about 7200rpm. There doesn't appear to be any external indication as to what the box contains.

for those of you who got the slip of paper that says the drive is a 7200rpm drive.......what does the label say on the drive?

it was my understanding that wd had discontinued the wd1200ab (5400rpm model) and was now only producing the 7200rpm model. so i'm surprised that cc has so many of these buggers. but if they ARE 7200rpm drives, maybe they are just re-using the 5400's boxes.

still seems strange, though, since they can get quite a few bucks more for the 7200rpm model.

btw....i opened mine and it is a 5400rpm model....but there is nothing on the drive's label to indicate the rotational speed...but the model is wd1200ab.....what about the model number listed on the drive for those who got the '7200rpm' note??

also, i'm glad for the 5400rpm drive, since this will go in my ultimate tv receiver. they tend to run hot on their own, and the 7200's do put out a bit more heat....something i don't want. and there's no benefit to the 7,200rpm drive in a ultimate tv receiver.

No..just the 5400rpm. I really could tell on the drive, it had no mention of 5400 or 7200 rpm's, but then again I was too eager to get it into my Ultimate TV...wooohooo...105 hours. Gotta sell my Tivo now..195+ hrs.

Here's what the label on the drive should show.

5400 rpm------- WD1200AB-xxxxxx
7200 rpm------- WD1200BB-xxxxxx

Spring 2002 WD Product Guide. Looks like the 5400rpm drives are still being produced.
So YMMV on getting the 7200rpm.

Just noticed that serial # of the drives are stickered under the boxes, is it possible to check on-line if they are 5400 or 7200rpm????

the product guide is just marketing hype....and it was produced quite some time ago.....the wd website doesn't actually show the wd1200ab anymore. but if the drive is still being produced....that's good.....bound to be more good deals like this coming up for this drive.......

Man, I should have gone today. I was out shopping with the family and had no time to get to the store. Now that I know there are some 7200 drives, I'm think I'm gonna try and get one.

I bought one of these from Fry's a few week back for $99, no MIR. Used it for my Showstopper.

Can anyone comment on the noise level of these drives (and any noise diffs between the two people are getting)?

Thanks!
