120hz Gaming Monitor Advice

Hi!

Although I've been perfectly happy with a 60hz monitor thus far, a few people I game with have been insisting that I check out 120hz monitors, relating the experiencing of having one to using a mechanical keyboard - once you try it, you can't go back.

Anyway, I've mostly ignored them, but the Benq XL2420T, with its colour adjustment (supposedly it helps see things in shadows) has made me reconsider getting one of these monitors.

Thoughts? Are there better/cheaper 120hz monitors out there that are worth looking it. Keep in mind I'm buying from Canada, and I've noticed we have a much more limited selection of 120hz monitors so far.

Thanks!

I haven't seen too much of these monitors, but I know you can research monitors that pro gamers use (which is all 120hz). I think the cheapest you'll find one is about $350 or so. One thing to mention is you need a good video card to utilize these monitors. I see you have an GTX 560 Ti, with that card you'll never get even close to 120 FPS on games like BF3, Metro 2033, Crysis which would defeat the purpose of having the monitor.

Hi, thanks for your thoughts. The machine in my sig will be an HTPC in about 2 weeks when I build an IB+680 machine

Going to 23inch to 24inch monitor is silly and you won't notice a difference with the technology. Especially the "help you see in shadows" mambo jumbo. Not worth the investment currently.

With all the screens being put out for tablets/phones i don't see any advancements in the foreseeable future that justifies a new monitor purchase if you already have one, let alone price drops. Just no incentive to cater to desktops users currently.

The size doesn't matter, but I've had many people claim there is a noticeable difference when going to 120hz. They said it with mechanical keyboards and I found that to be true as well. I've never had a person who switched to 120hz claim they did not notice a significant difference.

I realize this is not a necessity, but I am only concerned if it will deliver on what it claims and if there are better/comparable 120hz monitors out there - if cost were an issue I wouldn't look at this.

I have the Acer GD235Hz and i absolutely love it

I assume that is also a 120hz monitor?

Go for an 120Hz monitor, its a night and day difference over a 60Hz screen for fast 3D games.

I think the best 120Hz screens out at the moment are the Benq XL2420T and Samsung S27A950D. You will have to tweak the Benq from factory to get decent image quality.

You really need to try one out first though, unless you can return items if you don't like them.

What monitor you got at the moment? IPS?

I'm using a Dell Alienware 120hz monitor. No complaints, I love it. Even in Windows you see a difference between 60hz monitors. I'm tempted to get the 3d vision setup now that I have a 680 but haven't yet. I picked up the Dell on sale so it was the same price as the ASUS one I got my brother. That one has a glossy screen and he likes it a lot too. He uses a 570SC to drive that monitor.

I currently have a standard TN LED, nothing special (in my sig). The Samsung S27A950D seems quite a bit more expensive than the Benq - is it significantly better?

If you already have a TN panel then absolutely go for 120Hz.

I have not tested either of those screens so I can't say, the Samsung is 27" while the Benq is 24".

Apparently the Samsung is the best 120Hz monitor out there.

Wish I could give you more than that but I can't.

If your going to put down some money then I'd advise you do some research first. Some of the 120Hz screens can be a little bit 'quirky' when it comes to image quality.

That's why I'm here! I've done some reading but I can't find any significant criticisms of the Benq, I was hoping someone here has tried it/has experience with 120hz monitors.

No worries

There is a large thread over on the Overclockers UK forum regarding this monitor.

It should give you a good idea of what to expect, along with user input regarding OSD settings.

I swear by the BenQ monitors, currently own two of the old 2410Ts (had 3 at one point but have since sold one to a friend) as well as the newer XL2420T

the static image quality of the BenQ's has never been a strong point, but when it comes to motion clarity and input response they've been second to none (outside of CRTs of course). The custom profiles can also make it incredibly easy to see things in the dark, effectively giving you night vision in games, although it can really screw with the overall image quality. The 2420T is very nice in that regard has it actually has a sort of breakout button panel for hotswapping between 3 different saved profiles.

If you're concerned about image quality there are several guides on the net that go into their own calibrations that you can copy off of at least as a starting point and for the most part they do a good job for reigning in acceptable desktop quality.

I recently bought a Viewsonic 22" VX2268wm 120hz monitor, it was only like $210 too. I personally dont know why anyone who games would want to play anything below 120hz but...some do. Imo, you should definitely get a 120hz monitor. This is especially true if you enjoy or regularly play first person shooter games(anything with above average motion).

Its a pretty decent and noticeable difference. I just switched from my beloved CRT monitor which I had for many years to this Viewsonic. For anyone who games, theres no reason to play at 60hz in the 21st century...

My 2 cents.

I have an old BenQ X2200W - short, it's one of the best H/W purchases i ever made. It's still running strong, although its starting to show some signs of age.

This 24" looks so fricking tempting to me, let alone its 120HZ and can do 3D as well. The only downside is the price and the fact i would be forced to get a Nvidia card for taking Advantage of 3D vision.

I manage one of the best Battlefield 3 teams in the world, and we're transitioning to Tribes: Ascend at the developer's behest So yea, I think I would benefit from a 120hz!

The 27" samsung is super expensive, but there is a 24" version of it that is just as good. I picked one up and I actually gained about 3% accuracy in BF3 overall in my stats. That may not seem like much, but I'm at 25% average accuracy now across all weapons, and that's aimbot territory.

There is a huge difference between 60hz monitors. It's not all sunshine and roses though because when my FPS drops below 90-100 fps I can notice the missing frames. The monitor is still very responsive, but the motion isn't as smooth as it is when I'm pegged at 120fps. Guess I need another 7970 to keep FPS at 120 constant.

So with a 120hz monitor do you run with Vsync on or off?

I Currently game on a Dell U2711 @ 1440x2560 and a gtx680, was considering a 3d/120hz monitor for gaming and just do movies and stuff on my dell but not sure that I would handle the downsize.

So which one of those are better? The Benq XL2420T or the Samsung S23A700D?

You don’t need to be hitting 120 FPS to see a benefit from a 120Hz displays. You automatically get reduced ghosting and RTC artifacts because of 120Hz, for example.

I always run with vsync off even on 60hz. Lag and stuttering problem if I don't. Capping frames sometimes minimizes tearing but I'll tear for instant reaction. Chances are you will tear less but just because your under 120 doesnt mean you wont tear. Monitors tear no matter if delivering under or over w/o vsync.

It goes both ways, I've had plenty of people who did not notice a difference with 120hz monitors. I myself and brother sold ours because did not notice any improvements in bf3 or tribes ascend vs are "old" dell 24inch U2410. Some clan members as well did not notice anything. Some swear to it, but to be its just a placebo effect.

If you insist on getting one, i would find a way to compare the one you have with psychically with someone who has one side by side.
