Hi all,

I am going about buying a new gaming monitor for Christmas and am wondering if anyone can recommend one?

I am looking to get something with 120hz refresh rate, low input lag, 2ms response and all the other gaming essentials. I am not too worried about 3D to be honest. I was looking at 24 - 27 inch but I reckon 27inch might be beyond my budget.

A few of my buddies have Benq XL2410t's and they swear by them but I have read about light bleeding on them. This is not really a major concern to me as long as it doesn't ruin the display.

Another I have been looking at is the Asus VG236HE. Not too sure what this monitors is like but it is a good bit cheaper than the XL2410t and I have read good things about it.

My budget is about 300 Euro. Can anyone recommend any of these two monitors or any other monitor in the 300 quid price range?

Thanks for the help.

I can't recommend one personally but take a look at the XL2420T it seems to be an updated version of your friends monitor.

I have the Asus and have worked with other 120Hz monitors at my last job. All the 120Hz computer monitors I've used have had backlight bleed of varying magnitudes, especially compared to higher end displays that tend to have better design and quality control. Though my Asus has seemed to "settle in" over the months. That, or I've gotten used to it.

Anyway, pretty much any 120Hz monitor will fit your bill as input lag kinda fades into nothingness if you're hitting 120FPS (in my perception, YMMV of course). All 120Hz gaming monitors are kinda average-at-best when it comes to flat-out image quality, but that's not the point of current gen 120Hz displays.

Also, I'd suggest going with a smaller screen size (23", maybe 24"). Anything bigger and the DPI is going to be pretty bad as 120Hz monitors haven't gotten past 1080p resolutions yet (as far as I know). Of course, DPI and viewing distances are all personal preference, and this is just my opinion. Finally, just make sure the rest of your system is up to snuff so you can at least hit a vsynced 60 FPS, though obviously you'd ideally want your system to be able to push a vsynced 120 FPS @ 1080p at all times. If your system can't handle high framerates, you'll need to cut down the eye candy or otherwise just save your money and grab a good 60Hz panel.

So, summing up, my Asus as been fine except the backlight bleed, which was present in all displays of that generation. The newer generation stuff might have fixed that issue, but I haven't checked anything newer than my Asus. I run an i5-2500k@4.5GHz and crossfired 6950's, and I tend to keep 60FPS+ at most games. If you drop below 60FPS, I've found that the 120Hz displays loose a *lot* of their luster (personally, again YMMV). Likewise, they really shine in motion while at 120FPS.

The new 27" 120Hz Asus VG278 display is nearly perfect. It is a very nice screen with not too much backlight bleed and the pixels are not too large for 1080p. It also accepts HDMI 1.4 for HD3D (i think; not there yet)

BEST OF ALL, the screen is MATTE - *not gloss* - like my (3 x) 23" Asus VG236 displays.

i just started evaluating it with Batman AC in 3D Vision (strangely, DX11 is playable on my PC with Tess on Normal and motion blur off; everything else maxed including PhysX) with a GTX 560 Ti 448 Core FTW and a GTX 560 Ti as dedicated PhysX card. i get the nasty slowdowns for an instant and then everything returns to normal (combos are great btw)

This new 27" display is a step up over the older 23" display. And if you are playing in S3D, bigger is definitely better

i also got a Viewsonic VG231 23" HD3D display (from Viewsonic) the same day i got the Asus display (from Nvidia) and i haven't even turned it on yet
:$

first things first - i got to finish pla .. i mean *evaluating* Arkham City with 3D Vision 2 and PhysX .. then i am off to a HD3D confrontation with 3D Vision 2
:whiste:

Just put up a new post as I thought this one was lost without replies. Guess not!
Thanks for the input.

I am indeed trying to source an in stock XL2420T for around 300 - 320 but it is proving difficult.

Would it be an improvement over the VG236HE?

Also, my system specs are:
i7 2600k @ stock
16gb Ripjaw RAM
Gigabyte ATI 6970 2GB vid ram.

Any reason you are limiting yourself to 120hz? They are not really worth the money unless you are into 3d stuff.

The only reason I am looking at 120hz monitors is for smoothness in games.
I have a few friends who have them and say they are great and really make things smooth and nice...

Again, if anyone can recommend any other non 120hz monitors I would love to hear about them.

Again, I am only looking at them to cut out using V-sync in games and having a smoother game experience.

BS they aren't worth it unless you 3d game. I don't 3d game with mine and I hate going and using a 60hz monitor. Everything is affected by the 120hz monitor. It's a night and day difference.

So for gaming it is preferable to have a 120hz monitor with an ok image quality than to have a 60hz monitor with a much better image quality?

i'd take the 120Hz as i don't notice small IQ differences anyway. if you do notice them, take the broomstick out of your arse

It really depends on what you find acceptable. Some people can't use anything but an IPS monitor. Others nothing under 28" or someone can't handle microstutter. After playing on a 60hz for many years and now using a 120hz, to me I can't go back. To each person it's up to what they value more.

That being said I liked the ASUS monitor but right now am having to RMA it due to some dark and light pixels that are streaking across the screen like a comet. The ASUS RMA process though was hasslefree and quick, I just need to mail it off.

Mmm i don't notice a difference at all. Yes i've used both, yes i've tried them both side-by-side.

Op just get a nice 24inch U2410 1900x1200 and don't look back. Its a great monitor games\movies\etc.

U2410 is wayyyyyy out of my price range.
If I had the budget I would go for the Samsung 23A750D but it is too much of a stretch.
Max I have is about 320euro

With LED your going to get 5ms to 8 ms response time... If you enable vsync you will get input lag, the mouse wont be like it is on a CRT playing FPS....and what not.

Im @ 1ms ,,and I have 0 input lag.. Even 2ms gives input lag,, my cousins LG is 24 inch 2ms, and you cant turn on vsync or else its laggy and input lag,,, mine is like it was on my Sony FW900 CRT I used for over 10 years...,, I love it!!!

Ok.... So an update.

I have been looking for an XL2420T in stock.
Managed only to find one place here in Ireland but it is a bit pricey at €369.
I bit the bullet and went to order, and to put it extremely lightly, I had issues ordering and am now waiting for this to be resolved. This won't happen till Monday I reckon.

So in the mean time, does anyone know any sites that are selling the XL2420T and have it in stock? If so, please let me know. It would be much appreciated.

Also, I was all ready to go with the VG236HE when I realised that it is not LED backlit.
Does this make any difference? If not, I may still go for it as I am getting headache after headache trying to source and buy an XL2420T.

My final option is to go for the Samsung S23A700D. The 750D is a bit out of budget but the 700D is the same screen without the built in 3D stuff and looks very nice. The only things that put the XL2420T ahead in my list where the fact it is new and "unknown" (excitement!) and that it's stand does all sorts of trickery when it comes to adjusting it. The Samsung has a platry tilt.

Has anyone any experience with the Samsung? We have a 46 inch LED Samsung screen as our TV and I love it.

Thanks for all the help!

I tried to get hold of an XL2420T but they were either too expensive or out of stock.
So.... because I am not exactly flush with cash, I decided to go with the Asus VG236HE.

I will put up a brief review of the monitor when I get it just in case it helps anyone make up their mind.

Cheers and Happy Christmas!
