Question 120hz vs 144hz

Is there a significant difference? Looking at TV's and seeing 2023 models with 144hz inputs. Of course they are more expensive.

Like I said, for TV duty it makes no difference. For PC gaming it is different. In the latter case, adaptive frame rate would be best.

as long as your display card and monitor both support FreeSync, that is what is important. now how much gpu power you want is entirely up to you. what is important is the average minimum frame rate. Frame rate fluctuates based on complexity of the frame so as long as you can maintain an acceptable average minimum frame rate the experience will be good. I have no interest whatsoever in ray tracing so my needs are much lower.

I have an RX 6950XT/5900x. Everything I am looking at supports FreeSync Premium Pro and variable refresh rate. I've read a little about ray tracing but don't know if I would make much use of it.

That doesn't matter. Your eyes can't tell the difference, but you'll still be happily satisfied, just knowing that your TV is faster.

144 > 120, all that matters. And soon, we might have megahertz refresh rates. Won't that be a great thing for our human 30 hz eyeballs?

Still doesn't make a difference. Most TV have fixed refresh rate. Even the ones that support freesynch tend to have upper limit of 60Hz. TV inputs are just laggy.

All the TV's I'm looking at all have variable refresh rates and support AMD FreeSync Pro. Low end Tv's are 60hz and don't have the gaming features. 2023 models are introducing 144hz refresh rates over the previous 120hz. I'm just wondering if it is worth the extra money. I am assuming all the major TV manufacturers aren't lying about their TV specs.

well, when I was looking for a TV a few years back and Samsung proudly showed it had freesync, except when you read the spec it was only up to 60Hz.

The HDMI Port and Console or GPU needs to be HDMI 2.1
And to my knowledge most consoles can not do 144hz.
However your RX6950XT can and does have 144hz.

So as long as the TV has HDMI 2.1 and has a 144hz panel, then yes it will do 144hz.
But i do not know if your card will do 144 FPS @ 4k on a "AAA" title.

Otherwise the TV will be frame locked at 144hz, with freesync if the game goes up that high.

No I don't think it will hit 144fps @4k with newer games. I have seen benchmarks that hit triple digits but not over 144hz. I'm sure it could exceed 144hz with older games though.

If you are buying this display for the computer with the 6950XT, and it is still running Windows 7, you may want to do some research to see if the Windows 7 compatible drivers support Freesync on Windows 7. I seem to recall there was some issue this a little while back, but I am not sure.

In general though, if used for gaming, a PC monitor is going to give a faster, smoother experience than a TV.

You're not gonna notice 120 vs 144hz probably even if they were side by side. 120/144 next to 240+ Hz? Yeah, maybe sense increased fluidity.

Personally the sweet spot for me is 90+ onward, it becomes increasingly difficult for me to notice gains from going above 90 FPS. Everyone is different tho.

My NIB ASUS 6800 XT LC has a clear warning on the back of the box saying that it's NOT compatible with Windows 7.

I just checked the MSI RX 6800 Gaming X/Z Trio boxes and both have Windows 7 listed under minimum requirements but a little number 2 which in the notes says: Not compatible with Windows 7. The box both tells you it is and isn't, it also has a warning for "Cancer & Reproductive harm" with no context, so it's not exactly a good reference.

There are drivers but they are horribly out of date & performance isn't great.
