I vote Nexus although I'd never spend that kind of money on a fan. You can get a 1650rpm Yate Loon (who makes the Nexus fans) for $5.50. Hook it up to a $20 Sunbeam fan controller and you to run it down to the same speed as a Nexus or crank it up as well. Best of both worlds.

I've seen that SilenX has an 11dBa fan wich pushes 40CFMs at 12v and is supposedly very quiet.

don't believe the specs SilenX gives out. 11dBA is complete BS. that's like almost a vacuum silent room.

That's what I was thinking about right now. 11dBA is almost impossible to get.

BTW, where can I get Nexus fans online? I need a store that will ship overseas...

Not trying to be nit-picky...

Silent is an absolute term.

Quiet is a relative term.

When you guys are saying silent, 99.999% of the time you are meaning quiet. A setup will never "truely" be silent as the Harddrive remains to be the last component with moving parts. Even if you were to have a ram drive, there is possibility of electronic coil buzz.

For quite fan for cheap, Yateloon D12SL definately. No need to spend 20$ on Nexus when you can get 3 Yateloons for the same price.

I am in the market for some quiet 120mm fans. I have 2 that came with my server and they are very loud. I checked isellsurplus.com and did not see Yate Loon anywhere. Where can I pick one up cheap? I looked at other prices and ebay/the web has some nice quiet ones but I am not spending 15-20$
EDIT:
I just looked and the 2 fans I have are Delta wfb1212m which are supposedly already low noise@34dba. What is the Decibel rating of the Yate Loon?

Deltas are loud and push a lot of air. The Nexus is IIRC rated at 21dba. Also remember that noise ratings are logarithmic not linear so for every dba you go up or drop it is half or double the sound.

I think you mean the sound becomes twice as loud with a 3dB increase. Not every dB!

Ok... so where can I get Nexus fans? I need an online store able to ship overseas. Or someone willing to buy them for me and ship them to me

Nexus is just re-badged Yate-Loon so if you can find Yate Loon's there is no reason at all the get the Nexus.

The "3dBA twice as loud" rule starts to fall apart when dealing with such low noise levels. Example; two 20dBA fans will most likely come in at somewhere between 20-21dBA not 23; I doubt you would be able to perceive the difference.

Buy them from http://www.siliconacoustics.com/ . They ship internationally as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks!. The Nexus is $17, pretty much what I payed for my Panaflos. Is there anywhere I can get the Yate Loons? I hear they're much cheaper and are almost identical to the Nexus (if you take a closer look to the Nexus, you'll see that it has the same model number as the Yate Loon, D12SL-12).

Oh, I'm also reading a lot about the "rounded/closed corners" of these fans, and that they seem to be incompatible with some fan mounting adapters. How's that?

The Yate Loon "Nexus" version turns at only 1000 rpm which is quite slow - thus it's quiet. Yate Loon fans also are known for low motor noise levels which is the real reason to buy one. A few months ago there were some deals on the 1350 rpm orange Yate Loons but currently, I'm not sure they are available anymore. You can get a 1650 rpm Yate Loon for only $5.50 here http://store.yahoo.com/pctekonline/12x12cmcasefan.html Mod it to run at 7 volts and it will be nice and quiet - and way cheaper than a Nexus. Moding the corners is easy; use a dremmel, file, or similar to cut out the webbing. No worry.

Good luck.

So, is it a good idea to run the Nexus fans at 7v? Or will it be too slow and not efficient?

I suppose that a 7v Nexus fan would turn at about 500 rpm's or lower, drastically lowering it's CFM rating.

I run mine @ 5 volts and it still cools my computer efficiently
