I'm a SigSauer man, I'd recommend the Sig P245. It's a .45ACP, but it's a compact version. I've fired one a few times at the range, and I like the trigger pull. It's also fairly lightweight for a .45

Basically what I'm looking for is something small. I'd like to purchase a handgun for concealed carry. I don't intend to get the permit for a while, but I'd like to get some familiarity with the weapon first.
I'm looking for something small and light like a keltec p3at or p11.
Prefer 9mm.
Small and light.
Inexpensive. (p38, p11 can be had for <$300)

Any suggestions?

You wanna carry a concealed weapon. Your going to buy the gun first and don't intend to get a permit for awhile. And you want suggestions? Give me a break, you sound like a someone looking to commit a crime with a gun.

While much better than any Glock, it's inferior compared to Sigs of similar caliber, mostly due to the "first-shot flyer syndrome." The grouping just isn't as consistant as the Sigs, at least in my experience.

Or someone who wants to learn how to shoot well and properly before he carries it around. STFU and get out of the thread.

I don?t think getting a keltec is a good idea, it?s just not manufactured to the tolerances that I would want to trust my life with.

Look at the Kahr E9, you won?t see it on the Kahr website but it is available from dealers. It is basically a Kahr K9 with less cosmetic detail to save on manufacturing costs. I got mine for about $380.

A number of Glocks can be had for a little more than 400 if you find the right dealer.

And the XD9 has got some good reviews.

I just can't justify saving $150 on something that MUST work properly when my life depends on it, especially when $150 means lower quality.

On the other hand, something it better than nothing.

Also, check out www.glocktalk.com they have a lot of info on all sorts of handguns and a whole section of their forum devoted to carry issues.

Find a range where you can rent handguns to shoot. Try as many as you can.

You never know what you might like the best. If this is going to end up as your carry weapon you need to be extremely comfortable with it.

Anyone with half a brain would want to practice with the guy before they have to take the test for the CC permit. You will not pass if you can't pass an accuracy test.

To add to that, your an obvious noob and you state your intention is to carry a gun concealed. HMMMMM...............a noob with a concealed weapon. Nice mix................for a disaster that is.

What are you going to do? Shoot me? Its not trolling. All other things aside, its a very legimate question to ask why someone wants to carry a concealed weapon. Would you ask a guy why he wants 1000lbs of fertilizer and he's not a farmer.

Yes it is trolling. You are posting to create controversy where none is needed. It is none of your business why he is getting it unless you are an agent of the state he is living in or with the ATF and are looking into catching a felon trying to purchase a firearm.

BTW, your analogy is flawed. You are comparing a something that would raise many red flags with various agencies because of the potential of a giant bomb, to a CCW permit, which is sought after everyday by law abiting citizens.

I don't feel like I need to justify my reasoning to classy. But, to everyone else, thanks for the support.
If anyone else has any suggestions, please throw em forward.

.357 Combat Magnum, made by Smith and Wesson. Best gun I've ever fired, it has a shorter barrel than normal... used to be standard for MD State Troopers until they got the shtty berretta's now. Trust me, a .357 Mag will put a hole MUCH bigger in something/one than a 9.

to answer YOUR question, I suggest a compact glock, but only because I prefer glocks over other weapons that I have tried. The trigger pull will always be the same on the glock, and it never jams.

But seriously, as others have said, try to find a range that rents, and check some out for yourself. Put 50-100 rounds through each...narrow it down to 2 or 3, then shoot with those some more on a different day. Narrow it down to 2, shoot again. Then pick. After you purchase, put at least 300 rounds through it to make sure it doesnt jam and is ready. Get some training, get your permit. May take awhile, but at least you will know that you have the right gun for you, and that you know how to handle it.
