The General Headquarters of Abu Dhabi Police said only one person, an Asian, was killed in the multiple chain reaction of the crash between 127 vehicles with 61 injured.

That's because they have to investigate what happened. After the investigation is done, investigators investigate the investigation.
After all that, someone nods their head with approval, and the army of police, detectives, collision experts and fire and rescue watch 2 or 3 people start the clean up.

It's because of the very thick fog, and stupid drivers using hazard lights while driving, instead of fog lights only. When they stop, there's little warning for the cars behind.

I drove that road for nearly two years to work (Dubai - Abu Dhabi). The tolerated speed limit is 160 kph on Abu Dhabi side, 140 kph on Dubai side, and people take advantage of that regardless of the weather. It's an hour long drive at that speed from one city to the other and somehow everyone runs late. But yeah, it's pretty dumb! And AFAIK, two people died.

They are pretty used to it that's why it takes only so long. By 9 a.m. there are roughly 150 accidents in Dubai alone, for a full day expect 450-500. Granted, most are small accidents, but it also means traffic jam, that's why the police speed their way into clearing the choke points.

Well we had about 40 or so cars in accidents within about 15 minutes here once. A freak downpour hit like a massive bucket in the sky let loose all the water at the same time. I have never seen water fall so fast and when it was all said and done, the sides of the freeway were full of cars pulled over.
