Is this hot . . . or not? it may not be "full-featured" but are there any cheaper alternatives than $43.99 shipped for a 128MB flash drive/MP3 player?

Looks to me like one of those Iriver 300 series w/o a screen. I don't think I could live with a mp3 player w/o a screen IMO

I didn't think so either until I bought a Nomad MuVo (the first version with very few frills). When you're only dealing with 64-256MB of music, it's not such a big deal, I find. Now if there weren't a screen on my Archos Jukebox Recorder 2 with 20GB of storage space, that would be a problem.

Looks like it's now $39.99 with free FexEx shipping. So, $4 cheaper than when originally posted.

Arrived today; I just hooked it up. Here's my review:

PROS: SIMPLE (on/play/off button, volume down/last track button, and volume up/next track button)
NO CRAPPY PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE (just plug device directly to USB port, it autodetects w/ w2k and above - drag & drop to copy files)

CON: small headphone jack - proprietary? foreign? the funky earbuds that come with are built into the lanyard. my lightweight headphone jack is too big for the female port on the player - story of my life - j/k!

the packaging has the smack of some crap that was an overstock in Korea or someplace & they decided to dump their old USB 1.1 crap on us - for $43 shipped, I ain't complaining - thanks, OP.

Dang. Not being able to swap the earbuds is a deal breaker for me. Sounded like a sweet deal too...

Mine should be arriving tomorrow.

Let us know if you have the same problem.

Is it possible that onelove's headphone plug is just slightly larger than most? (he wishes! )

But seriously, if I can't use alternative headphones, I'm not sure this is for me
Thanks

Looks like a model a co-worker has/had. His original headphone broke (only one side works) and he's been looking for another headset to replace it, but can't find one anywhere with a jack that size. So I think it's proprietary or is only available in Korea or someplace, but not the U.S.

Got mine this afternoon. The headphone jack is definately not 1/8". Here's a pic. The black one on top is a 1/8" Koss headphone jack. The grey one on the bottom is the X-Micro earphones jack which seem to be exactly 2mm (or around 3/32"). Perhaps 2mm is a standard elsewhere in the world?

It's very small and lightweight, and extremely simple to use. It seems to play tracks in the order you copied them on to it, not alphabetically or randomly. The manufacturer's site says it supports bit rates of 32kbps to 224kbps however I've found that it works fine with 320kps and VBR encoded MP3s as well. The two WinXP Pro machines I plugged it in to recognized it fine and gave it a drive letter. Despite it being a USB1.1 device it doesn't take too long to copy music on to it. It transfers somewhere near 1MB/sec.

The whole earphone/lanyard thing was kinda confusing at first as I'd never seen anything like it before. It incorporates a neck cord thing with an earbud coming out of each side. At the bottom is a little string you can detach from the lanyard, loop around the players keyring hole, and then reattach so it'll hang from your neck. Keeps the stress off the headphone cable. It's a rather odd setup but it seems to do the trick.

The sound quality is acceptable, nothing fancy, pretty average. Don't expect anything great from these earphones. I'm hoping I can find a 1/8" adapter so I can use some REAL headphones with it. Still, I'm happy overall with my purchase. I do plan on adding a newegg customer review advising others of the non-1/8" jack.

'Allo all!

For what it's worth, there are some audio players that like 3/32" jacks - alas, I don't have one of these specific players, but... if it does indeed have a 3/32" jack, can grab an adapter at RatShack for a few dollars. (Catalog number 274-373 claims to be a 3/32" --> 1/8" adapter.)

Have a good one!

Aha great! Thanks for the info, here's a direct link: Radioshack Adapter.
I wish they had a cable version of that adapter and not that rigid thing. But oh well, it doesn't look too terribly bulky. I'll have to pick one up.

thanks for the good advice all, esp re the adaptor, grooveman, nohr. enjoy your cheap tunes. I should have added to my "review" that the transfer rate on this cheapie is better than my samsung SH-30, which cannot reliably transfer at any rate over ~4100

I got the adapter today. Using my pairs of Sennheiser HD-497 and Koss SportaPro headphones greatly increases the sound quality and the volume is still more than adequate. Unfortunately the adapter adds 1.5" to the length of the player. It's a nice and snug fit though, it won't just fall out.

I think it's definately worth the hassle if you've got a good set of headphones you like. Now, where can I get an earbud-less lanyard?

As it has already been mentioned, Radio Shack has an adapter to convert one size plug into another. You can also try plugging the headphones into a cell phone, because most of them use the smaller sized plug. You obviously won't be able to talk to other people on the cell phone, but it would tell you if it is a standard size. I believe the XBox Live headset also uses this smaller plug, which might work with a cell phone now that I think of it.
