Damnit, you are making me regret my purchase. More info on the image quality please.

Are you kidding - these are black and white silent movies.... I mean how bad can the "image quality" get?

Yeah, because all Black and White movies suck!!!!

There are a number of films (like Metropolis) that are in the public domain. This basically means that if you happen to find a film print of it somewhere, you can slap it onto a DVD and sell it. And that's pretty much what people have done in the past and some of the worst DVD transfers are abyssmal.

I think I saw something like this a couple weeks ago with 100 old horror movies or something for an equally great deal. I'm actually looking to see if that one is still available so I can add a few things to get free shipping.

You'd be surprised. For example, the difference between most of the versions of Metropolis (many, many exist since the original prints were destroyed) and the newer, restored and "definitive" edition is night and day. I have picked up DVD's of Metropolis and other German expressionist films on the cheap that were nearly unwatchable. (Also keep in mind silent films aren't truly silent--music is usually involved, so sound quality is an issue.) But the newly redone DVD is simply remarkable. Even the newly remastered release of The Graduate is an improvement (and now it's finally available in widescreen format).

I'm very, very tempted. Thanks for the post.

But the question is, what is the quality of these disks? Even $6 (plus shipping, unless you find another $19 worth of stuff, which I personally just spent last week) disks that are unwatchable is a waste of $6+.

Ugh...just another rehash of low quality VHS to DVD dubs of public domain films that any joker with a DVD-R could make and sell royalty free. If you truly appreciate the history of these films, go find the special versions that have been restored, if possible. ...

Public Domain films? I didn't know movies made it into the public domain.
edit: (I'm not saying this isn't true, just that I never knew this)

Regardless, this'll provide that "level of sophistication" to provide guests at my home with... something to counter-balance Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

everything becomes public domain after 75 years. That's why Disney is sweating, some of their old Mickey Mouse stuff is about to go public, adn they are trying to change the copywright laws...

Ok, I think you're exaggerating here. The discs won't be "UNWATCHABLE" or they wouldn't bother selling them in the first place. They will be watchable, albeit with some lighting problems. Think of it in terms of Criterion Collection vs. $5.88 Wal-Mart DVD. They are both watchable, you pay a premium for the Criterion transfer & features. It isn't the end of the world, jeez.

I picked up Metropolis at Shopko for 5 bucks (public domain copy) and man is it bad. I know its a really old movie, but you can tell that there was no studio to remaster it for DVD.

A silent movie is never "silent". If you buy a good quality release like one released by Kino or Image the accompaning organ music or orchestra will make your audio system rock!

Sorry for the original thread crap.

Check your Amazon order online. My confirmation email, dated Sunday, Feb. 22, included the $5.94-priced DVD's. Checking online today, the DVD's are mysteriously missing, with a new reduced total for my order.

Ha! It looks like Amazon.com took it off their website.... that's funny.

"Customer Review" yeah, sure... only if they're positive...otherwise we'll delete them.....

Anyways, I copy/pasted what I saw......clearly it had been read by others....

I just checked mine right now and I still see my order for the DVD set. Did you order a ton of them?
