On CNN when they were talking to the doctor it sounds like he would be okay, just hypothermic and dehydrated (sp?).

What I don't get is all of the remaining 12 were found in the same place and they were talking like the 11 that died had CO poisoning while the doctor said the one survivor was negative for CO.

They celebrated for 3 hours before being told that 12 had died and only one had made it out alive.

What a horrible rumor. I cant imagine being one of the family members for any of the miners that were in there. I remember seeing on the local news earlier tonight that 12 had survived and now on CNN says that only one actually made it. Damn that sucks. RIP trapped miners.

"TALLMANSVILLE, W.Va. - Family members of miners trapped in a West Virginia mine say only one of the 13 miners survived.

International Coal Group Chief Executive Officer Ben Hatfield told the families that only one miner, Randal McCloy, had survived the explosion.

Hatfield told the families gathered at the Sago Baptist Church that "there had been a lack of communication, that what we were told was wrong and that only one survived," said John Groves, whose brother Jerry Groves was one of the trapped miners.

At that point, chaos broke out in the church and a fight started. ..."

hmm...apparently the company had moved to eliminate UMW miners and was going to non-union workers and that safety violations galore were occurring. The relative of a miner is on The Today Show complaining of the numerous safety violations and that the UMW needs to get back into that mine.

People are putting WAY too much stock in the misonfo that they were alive thing.

Stop looking for blame and realize mining is DANGEROUS. I would rather be the drummer boy int he civil war then take on what they do.

What a damn shame.

Anyone know if this was a unionized mine?

Hell even union mines are probably afraid to strike and instead work in bad conditions or with numerous safety problems...because most of the public will scream they make too much and they are just being greedy, or at least they are afraid that the CEO will go union busting with the support of friends in the White House.

Non-union mines don't even stand a chance....despite all the goosesteppers who say unions are worthless because there are regulations on the books to protect them. Well those regulations are basically worthless...especially if workers have an enemy in the White House.

Yes, I blame Republicans once again.

The Mine Company fully deployed Republican style anti-worker conditions as it is anti-union.

What happened is tragic but sadly fully expected in the new Republican America.

Wow what bad news. Before I went to sleep I was happy that they were found and actually waited a little because they were allegedly going to be taken to the church to meet their family. Then I find out that only 1 survived and who knows if this guy will be disabled or what not. I don't understand how a rumor like this could have leaked as truth and can you imagine how devastated these people are? One minute they were expecting death, the next minute they were found alive, and finally dead. Heads need to roll over this misinformation.

Jeez - what a sad and tragic case. My sympathies are definitely with the families on this one - what a mess. Dave, it'd be nice if you could refrain from trying to turn this into a partisan issue, but I guess that's asking too much, eh?

Just couldn't wait to spin this tragedy for political purposes.

Mining is dangerous work, even under the more protective and preventative conditions of modern technology...look at mining conditions the world over, and the problems faced by unionized miners in numerous countries...unionized mines, stringent inspection standards and improved working conditions are sometimes not enough to prevent a tragedy.

Why don't we wait for an investigation before taking potshots...if the cause of the tragedy was negligence on the part of the mining company leadership, then those leaders should and hopefully will face the criminal charges for the "anti-worker" conditions that led to this accident.

It had been. The company was moving away from hiring union workers and using non-union workers as a way to weaken or eliminate the union. It was mentioned by multiple people in TV interviews since the tragedy.

Oh, and rbrandon? Settle down, Beavis. And read this:

Good heavens.

Having an administration that is NOT worker friendly surely didn't help either.

I sure were those miners alive you'd be first in line to call them ignorant rednecks. Oh the hypocrisy!

Obviously, the investigation has just begun but it's hard to ignore the dramatic spike in violations that occured after the mine changed ownership.

It's too early to ascribe responsibility but it was an older mine (deeper) and the ownership group was basically a private equity firm looking to make some bucks. Hopefully, they hired experienced managers. If not, better look for good representation b/c a good trial lawyer will empty their pockets.

Wow, it's amazing that the one guy was able to survive.

I think even though 12 men died, we have to realize it could have been alot worse, I heard on the radio there was about 600 workers in there when the explosion happened. I'm not trying to brush away the deaths of those men, but 12/600 is less than 1% fatality. Not too bad... it could have been alot worse.

RIP for those miners who died down there

Hadn't heard about the 600 being down there. But, were they all in the same area? How big is the mine?

Mines are HUGE, they usually have multiple tunnels and workers usually take up most of the space in a mine.

What is exactly wrong with a member being new? Weren't you new some time ago? Just because you outnumber him in posts and have been here longer doesn't mean your points are more valid and his are less.

He makes an interesting point considering many people here look at America based on blue states vs red states. And those living in red states are considered red necks and racists.

Yep, you so-called liberals are really tolerant ...

I wish all the best to the families of those miners. Everyone should pray for them.

Not a Republican and never was, but how the heck do you know he was banned or not?

Just because he offers a different opinion than the mainstream crap around here doesn't mean he was banned before. I guess you guys want people to think alike, figures.

And yes, he is cute
