Don't let the subcontractors park in the driveway while the house is under construction your driveway will end up an oil stained mess. Most places the drive is the last concrete poured.

run that cat6 (not cat5) yourself.
Nothing is easier. When everything is studded up, drive over on a weekend with a box of cable, and some palsticm single nail clamps and start stringing that stuff up. Nail up some boxes where where you plan to have the equipment and just run the cables through them and tie them off for now.

I second this.

You'd be amazed at how friggin protective some builders are. They think they are doing you a favor building the house. It doesn't go in unless they put it in. If they didn't put it in, they'll rip it out. That's why I suggested approaching the electrical sub.

I guess I meant after informing the GC/electrical that you are going to do it. if they have a problem with it, they can pound sand. This is assuming that you run the cables cleanly and professionally of course.

That was one of my points earlier on. I don't get why the driveway was poured BEFORE the work is done. I'd guess it's to save on delivery costs to pour the foundation and driveway at the same time.

This. I've already talked to the subcontractor to see if there was any way to strip the package down to just cable and jacks, and he won't do it without the wiring box. It's not that expensive overall, but I'm also limited on how much I have out of pocket. Also the plans are finalized at this point.

I figure the only two things I run on ethernet at this point are my desktop and my xbox, and the latter is going to be getting replaced with a new slim which has wireless built in. I'll probably cope with my desktop in the meantime by having the modem/router with the desktop until I can run some cable myself later. It was determined that it just wasn't worth the effort, though I will ask the construction manager tomorrow (have a meeting with him anyhow) if there's any possibility for me (or them if I provide it) to run cable before the walls go up anyway.

Agreed, they don't want to be held liable for anything resultant from you going in and putting your own cable in. Plus, they like that they can charge you $100 an outlet to run an ethernet cable.

I noticed that too, but it also means no dehumidifier. Fuck dehumidifiers, I have to empty mine every day and hump the tank up the basement stairs like the goddam sorcerer's apprentice because I don't have a drain in the basement.

I have never heard of basement without drain. Where is your mechanical room?

How much are they charging you for the stuff?

A 1000' of Cat5e (more than enough for residential...don't fret cat6) is $80
Carlton low voltage boxes are $1.25 each
A bag of 50 staples is $1.50

In case your builder hasn't check current events, the builders confidence score is in the shitter. Does he really want to piddle around with such a small detail?

Show up with the materials and see if you can work something out.

I've got a house built by the same builder. They are very cookie cutter. You have a lot of options to choose from but they are all about doing it THEIR way.

Don't have a mechanical room. The Furnace and hot water heater are just sort of sitting in the middle of the basement.

So I was wrong when I said there's no plumbing in the basement, what I should have said is that there's no toilet, sink or anything like that. And yes, I could probably rig something, but I'm working on a bunch of other thing on the house and that is just low on the list.

Err, there is usually a drain right at the furnace and water heater. AC needs to drain, so does water heater, once in a while.

I just run a hose from the dehumidifier to the drain.

IIRC Wiring cabinet + 2 coax + 2 RJ11 + I think 3 RJ45 jacks was $799. Additional jacks were I think $33 each. The contractor was willing to switch the two RJ11 jacks to RJ45 for no charge (since he admitted they use cat5e for their phone runs too).

Basically when it was all said and done it would have been over $900 for the minimal amount of jacks I needed, and a bit over $1100 to do jacks in all of the rooms if desired. It would have come out of pocket before construction started, and I just couldn't justify it to myself just for a handful of RJ45 jacks for the exact cost reasons you pointed out.

It came to the point that I decided that once the keys are in my possession, if I really decide that it's necessary, I'll do it myself later.

Why is your dirt red?

As mentioned, it's clay. Typical soil around the mid-southeast.

Do you have an A/C? Where does the condensate drain go to?

There's no plumbing in the basement, where would the pump pump to?

Uh, through a window on to the lawn?

Right, but a new house I'd think you want a nice clean look on your walls.
Long story short, is anywhere where coax was terminating for TV I'd put an RJ45 jack in the wall too with a cat6 run to the closet.

ok last post on this with apologies to SunnyD for clogging his thread. House has central air but is very old (1915). I'll take a look when I get home but I think the condensate runs in a very thin plastic tube (not even sure what this is called) and punches into a pipe.

This. I'd be finishing it before the paint goes on if it were possible.

If they let me run the cable anyhow, I'll just drop runs TO the boxes that house the cable jack and/or phone jacks and tie them off. They can finish the walls and just put the appropriate plates on them, and I'll replace them with dual keystones later. That's IF they let me do it, which is doubtful.

Just to give you a real life example of why taking pictures, pictures, and more pictures is important...I offer you my morning...

In March they excavated my foundation and dropped in the drain line for the septic system. They forgot to mark where they put it.

Now at the end of July they wanted to dig and trench the septic. But they forgot where they put the line. They had to find a 4" pipe along a 70' long wall.

Lucky for them I had pictures of the excavated pit with the pipe and got them within 6" of where it was based on the pictures. Took them 5 minute to find it. Without that it could have taken hours.
