1366vs1156

Hi all

Just wondering, if you had $2000 to use for a new computer build, which processor would you build a system around.

I have this money budgeted, but SB build would be about mid april before the boards would show up.

Here is my 1366 build
I 970
Gigabyte UDR3
6G Patriot PC3 12800
2x XFX 6950
Antec 850+ power supply
Coolmaster 932 HAF case

Thoughts?

I know both sockets will soon become EOL, probably the 1366 before the 1156 , but was just thinking what I could build for $2000

I would honestly look around and pick up a SB system, the motherboards are still available. Otherwise the system looks solid, but I'm not sure about the 6 core option, it's overkill if you're a gamer.

I am unable to find any SB boards online and heard that there may not be any till April.

I know that the I 970 is overkill, but thought,hey why not right? Honestly, I am tempted to go with a P55 based system if I had the money tomorrow. I hate waiting, and I have been waiting for SB since mid last year.

So I guess it depends which comes first, my money or the respin of the SB mobos. Or, if I can find an original defected SB mobo for cheap and buy and addon SATA card.

There's no point in 1366 anymore unless you want to spend money on a 6 core processor. Wait for Sandy Bridge

Unless you have a dire need for a hex-core processor, I'd wait for SB too.

If you need a 6 core now you have no choice, 1366 it is. However if you can wait a few months and dont really need a 6 core i would go with a SB system after they release the fixed chipsets.

always buy latest and greatest. It doesn't make sense to go backward in technology. Is not a long wait.

i7 970 is a total waste of cash. No game is going to make use of 6 cores. Very little will actually. Either grab a 930 for less than half the price and you can clock it to 4+Ghz, or my personal preference would be wait and see for another few weeks. Hopefully Z68 will come around before those fixed P/H67 boards. Otherwise, I've heard you can find a P67 floating around if you look hard enough and just deal with only 2 SATA ports till your get the respin.

You haven't told us what the computer's main use will be. If it's gaming, I agree...wait for Sandy Bridge if you can...if you can't wait, get an i5-760 and a quality P55 board.

If you're going to be doing lots of "multi-threaded apps such as video editing and so on, then the i7-970 is a good choice...but the Sandy Bridge i7-2600K would be better.

I really dont' think I would get a six core proc if I built an X58 based system. I could certainly use that money for a better P55 based build

I mostly play flight sims and first person shooters, with some light video encoding tossed in for fun.

I think I may just wait till either the SB respin or the Z68 chipset. I have waited this long for SB, so what is a few more weeks?

I know if I build a P55 based system, I certainly would be happy with it, but know in my heart of hearts I would be kicking myself for not waiting a bit longer for SB, again!

I was kinda had the same problem but I also bought and had problems with SB.

I ended up going with a 950 1366 build and could not be happier.

Everybody saying big waste of money can not believe you did that. There is nothing wrong with 1366 there fast reliable/drivers. I can see the mob already coming lmao.

I guess if I had to choose today between a P55 based system or an X58, I would probably go with the P55, as there is an extremely large and healthy installed user base compared to the X58, which I think will go EOL shortly after socket 2011 is out.

I am not sure what I would do if my money came in tomorrow, as when it comes to upgrades, I am very weak willed and anxious to build a new rig, SB or P55.

Then again....MMM X58 goodness would last quite a long time

No, I think you misunderstand. There's nothing WRONG with the 1366 platform...it's very good, stable, and reliable...it's just overpriced for the performance, especially when compared to the Sandy Bridge 1155 platform. Unless you're doing lots of work that makes use of the hyperthreading and extra cores, you're actually paying a premium price for lower performance.
For those who do lots of video encoding and other similar work, the 6-core Gulftown processors are top-of-the-line...but for most of us...they're not worth the price.

there is one option for 1336 that is not expensive, for trade\sale forums here and hardforum. :biggrin: i just built system in signature and spent the following to get the stuff -
motherboard i spent $195 for the UD5, nice price for little used board
CPU i spent $180 for brand new i7 930, nice deal there.
memory wise i bought this kit on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231356
$134.99. add that up and you get roughly $510. i am getting good chunk of that back from selling my Q9450, motherboard and memory for $350. i would say that was worth it, real happy with the performance too.

The only reason to go with the 1366 platform right now is if your into professional video editing where time means money and you use software that make use of the cross the board bandwith advantage its got over the SB and 1156 platforms thats got the same limitations.

You are right but i have a microcenter right by me so 199 is crazy that is the Best cpu you can get in that price range hangs down.

I think I pretty much rule out an X58 based system. For what I would be using my new rig for, mostly gaming and some light movie making, a P55 system would be more than sufficient.

Just have to bide my time till the SB respin

funny how many people are dumping their SB setups in the for sale\trade forum here and on hardforum. last few days especially, just seen 2600k and UD7 go up for nice price

Unless you are a bit time gamer, X58 doesn't make much sense. The 1156 socket can be quite inexpensive and a very good performer especially when OC'd. An i7-870 and Asus mobo are going for $450 at Newegg which leaves you plenty of money to spend on other things like a couple of good SSDs for a raid 0 array. That will really improve your systems performance and the newer SSDs are coming out at the end of the month.

Seriously if its for that intended use you will be better of with the 2600k. Two weeks to wait its really worth the performance you will be getting in your desired needs. hexacores aint cut out for gaming. Their intended for apps that can make use off all their cores and its bandwith. You will be spending money on a cpu where you going to use half its potential and not seeing your moneys worth.

So hold on a bit theyre almost here again. Its really worth it
