She came over again this weekend and stayed over and it was great.

She doesn't abuse substances - she is now in outpatient for anxiety and depression only (psych), she is not in there for dual diagnosis (psych + substance). She does drink socially, but rarely, but refuses to drink in front of me no matter what. I said look if we go out to dinner have a glass of wine, and she refuses, even though I hate wine. So that's not a problem with her at least.

I'm already suffering from a lot of memory loss. And that can take years to heal. Many of the other bad things that happen to your body while abusing alcohol go away within months, so at least thats good. But memory is kinda important. I used to be known for a pretty sharp memory. Fuck.

Yes alcohol can cause brain damage including memory loss. You can probably speed up the recovery process by playing memory games. For example get 2 decks of playing cards with the same color back. Take out a pair of matching cards (2 kings of diamonds, 2 queens of diamonds, 2 jacks...etc.) Get about 36 pairs, shuffle them, lay them face down on a table 6 rows by 6 columns. Lift each card up one at a time and remember where it was, then place it back face down in the same spot. Lift another card and remember where it was, place back in the same spot face down, keep doing that until you see a card you've seen before, then find it's matching pair. When you get a pair set them aside and give yourself a point. You can time yourself if you want to track your progress over the next few days, weeks, months. Just be aware there is also a bit of luck involved in how fast you can solve a "board" because you can be lucky and find a matching pair immediately sometimes.

You can make larger "boards" as well 7 x 7, 8 x 8, whatever size you want/have space for.

There are probably some brain exercise games you can find for the PCs/Smartphones/Tablets as well. Have fun with it and don't get frustrated if it's hard at first, you're making progress and that journey is half the fun in and of itself!

Are we allowed to post someone else's face pic on here?

Allowed by the forum rules? I don't see why not. Allowed by the person who's face it is? Depends on the person. Better obtain consent from the person themselves if they are not a public figure and you value your relationship with them.

Very nice, she's a beauty. Just remember that beauty is only skin deep and fades over time so you realize that there is more to a long term relationship than just beauty. For the short term at least, have fun and enjoy your lives together!

That's her best picture. Most of the time she looks cute. It's good enough though

Now I'm breaking the rules. They say not to fraternize with people in your program, whether in-patient or out-patient. But I met a girl at in-patient, which is over now, and we are going out. So technically not breaking the rules. She is 26 and I'm 41. What could possibly go wrong?

Good on you, you're adults just have fun and let the chips fall where they may.

And always remember to be kind.

Good job kicking it and being clean. I hope you continue if that is what you want.

We've had our disagreements, but I always thought out of anyone here that I could have a drink with, it'd probably be you. We seemed to have the same taste, and food wise too. Congrats as it is.

Well the girl is coming here for a third straight weekend. Rehab romance is going strong so far. On the menu is a long visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art tomorrow followed by dinner in the city. Sunday is going on a nice long hike with my pup. Monday is still up for debate, maybe Central Park.

Feels so good to be out there doing stuff again after 6 months of depression and bunkering indoors with a handle of vodka and avoiding all outside contact. Life is good people, don't let it fly on by.

Appreciate it. I just try to keep it real. If you're ever in the NY metro area let me know. I won't be traveling anywhere in the states for awhile. Great food is one of the top pleasures of life.

Well made it past a month without a hiccup. 33 days clean. I've been to a bar, restaurants with liquor, my roommate keeping alcohol out and drinking in front of me. Zero urges. They say it can be easy in the beginning. Obviously when it gets hard I'll avoid all those situations.

In the past 4 weeks I've had numerous people tell me either i look noticeably better and/or sounded better. These comments came as early as 10 days to 2-3 weeks after detox. My sister literally said 'it's good to have my brother back'. I never realized the negative changes in those aspects of me because I was just living in the moment and they became normalized.

It's good to be back

Good job, not sure i could quit drinking, not that i drink to excess or want to drink to excess. But i did quit cocaine 8 years 6 months 3 days ago and that was a bitch, had done it every day for roughly 4 years and then one day had a WTF am i doing with my life moment and quit cold turkey. Had to give up alot of my friends as i could not be around people doing it at the beginning. It was rough, but after all this time it has gotten easier, the cravings were horrible for the first few months.

Just keep focusing on the reasons that made you snap and take the steps to get sober, and you will get through this. Sounds like the new girl is a good thing for you.

I'm pretty close to 8 months right now. I had a sip of Marsala wine once while cooking with it some months back, and that's it in the last 7.667 months (I use a date calculator app)

Thanks brother!

Hell yeah good work brother, I'll be at 2 months no alcohol or weed on weds. Finally feel done with it all just wasn't fun anymore.

Fantastic! Keep up the hard work. It certainly isn't easy the first year. Trust me... it starts to snowball after a year or two, then 5, then 10. The ball is always in our court to fuck up... Just don't let it go... Testing the waters with a sip is 100% normal. Just know that you've proven to yourself time and time again you (and I) cannot drink in moderation. One will become ten.

But hell yes, congrats! Always very happy and proud to hear someone is doing well in recovery...
