Short answer: Often, no. I've lived in many 'commuter neighborhoods' that are basically devoid of all life, human or animal.

It actually reminds me of an Isaac Asmimov story, The Naked Sun. There's a segment of humanity that lives on misc planets in complete isolation, only interacting with each other through Skype (basically), to the point that they're all such agoraphobic hermits that many are openly hostile toward others, while some are purely afraid, and some others are superbly fascinated with physical interaction.

These two probably lived alone, in a very white neighborhood, hung out with very white friends, and watched very conservative (sorry conservative posters, you can't argue this shit) media, convincing them that the darkies are around every corner, waiting to bust in their home. To the point that even witnessing a young black male near them brought them to the point of defensive aggression, akin to a cornered wild cat or snake.

They did just recently have an incident, so I'm not sure it's so simple as being isolated. However, as with boomerang, there's definitely some racist logic involved: that it's somehow okay to assume intent based on the color of someone's skin.

Fair enough, it was incredibly racist, and short-sighted of them. They made an assumption and chose to take a life based on that assumption. Thank FSM they're old as fuck and missed.

also, there's a telling social commentary that the kid has no idea how to get to school. by 14 i knew every single street, alley, loading dock, bike path, creek bank, underpass, etc, along with several of the storm sewers, in every neighborhood for several miles in any direction around my house.

.

I remember that story. Bracketing out the racism (a big bracket, obviously), there is maybe a bit of that sort of sociological weirdness about all this. Does seem to say something about how isolated people can become.

Question I have especially for 2A absolutists, if there were no footage who's story would you believe? I'm asking in the context of stories like this we have had over the years. One that comes to mind Jordan Davis.

Second question I have why is a guy like this allowed to own a gun? Why shouldn't as part of obtaining a license a behavioral/psychological screening be required. His distrust of back people and violent tendencies would have been revealed.

Excellent question.

WIthout video... screaming scared wife, feared for her/his life, thug tried all 3 doors, was trying to get past storm door, thought he saw something in his hand, had to shoot at him...

Come here to say this, I won't go as far as saying I know everything but I sure don't have to ask for direct if you drop me anywhere between home and school. Just by look up the Sun I will know which way to go.

it's a grid! how can you get lost?

seriously. Manhattan, Chicago....if you get lost there, then you have no hope. It takes 20 minutes or so for an adult to figure out how to get around in grid cities. Just blind yourself to lights and use your brain. These cities are actually very well designed to make your directional life easy.

There is absolutely nothing defensive about the way this idiot used his shotgun. I hope he is convicted of a felony so he never gets to own a gun again.

Good thing you and the responsible NRA were there to stop him before he purchased his shotgun because obviously he was horribly irresponsible before this incident, right?

Every gun owner is patriotic er, I mean responsible! ...until they aren't!

What great standards you guys maintain.

That's what mystified me somewhat. At close range, how the hell do you miss with a shotgun unless the guy was shooting a slug at the kid? Even if he was shooting double ought .410 ga. at full choke it still don't cut it. Although it was a potential life taking situation, that's some funny shit right there. The shooter was better off throwing the shotgun at the kid.

I normally like your posts, but sometimes you just sound like an idiot.

I don't represent the NRA or the idiot who shot at the kid. And what the hell does patriotism have to do with anything? What standards am I supposed to be maintaining for anyone other than myself and my family?

The only thing I can say about every gun owner is that they are innocent until found guilty in a court of law. That's basic due process. If you have a problem with that...

I'll take Hillary. He was a union firefighter and chances are that his union endorsed her and that's who he voted for.

You can donate my $100. to the NRA.

I'm in a union and that does not guarantee who given member will vote for as I know several who voted for trump so unless you can show proof who he voted for you just may loose that bet.

I think the NRA only cares that you own a gun, whether you know how to use it may be irrelevant to them.

Well, basically this reinforces my feelings about having a gun for "self defense". Now, I dont categorically oppose it, but I do think the the chances of ever needing and using it successfully for self defense are far less that the chances of: a) shooting the wrong person, b) accidentally shooting yourself or someone else, c) of having the gun taken away and used against you, or d) of having the gun used in anger against a family member.

In this particular case, the residents simply should have not opened the door to a stranger. I live in a large city, and that is our policy.

Well that is what I do. Generally I am hiding from Jehovah's Witnesses. They come through every year or so. I have thought about trying to convert them to atheism... maybe next time.

That's not Hillary country... But is always fun to watch how some people here and in real life get so very confused with the police and firefighters. One day they will be jerking off cops here and how they just love them all and liberals hate the police. The next day they are throwing them under the bus for being in unions and calling them all Dems just because their union sides with them. Can't have any free thinking there!

I get a lot of time-wasting callers. The majority are people trying to get you to sign up to donate to a charity (that's not how I'm ever going to choose a charity - can't help but feel cynical knowing that the collectors are paid contractors and get a share of whatever donations they can raise - plus who gives bank account details to a random caller?). There used to be a lot of aggressive or lying spivs trying to get you to sign up to some utility company or telecom provider or something, but there seems to have been a change in policy there, thank God. Those guys were just crooks.

There's also those Jehovah's Witnesses, and I find I'm weirdly positively disposed to them, because they are some of the only people pushing something you encounter who you know actually believe their own propaganda. I mean, it's nonsense, but at least its good-faith nonsense (and I've known plenty of people who went round political canvassing - it's not that different, it seems to me). On one occasion, when I was bored, I got them into a debate about evolution, like an internet thread but in real life. Carried it on to the point where they got annoyed and accused me of wasting their time!

Oh yeah, and there are the delivery people delivering something for a neighbour (who then fails to turn up to to collect it - I had a stranger's rolled-up mattress sitting in my hallway for a month at one point).

But never has it occured to me to shoot any of them (well, maybe some of those utility company salespeople, a bit).

You'd be amazed. I get asked for directions somehow whenever I'm there which is usually in midtown where it should be impossible to become lost. Have had to explain the numbering of the streets and avenues more than once to apparently otherwise intelligent people.
