144hz/1440p is even more demanding from a bandwidth perspective so that means your choice of cables is pretty limited. display port 1.2 is clearly inferior to hdmi 2.0 in terms of cable voltage at this point which means some pretty terribly small number cable choices for such a high bandwidth application. It's actually easier to get a signal 4k60 from DP than 1440p/144hz.

which is going to be the best gaming setup going forward... that is the question

I'll choose 1440p/144hz over anything 60hz. Smoothness/fluidity is more important to me than higher resolutions.

I've never gamed at either but I'm picking 4k 60hz as my next panel (aka TV Vizio p series) that has 120hz 1080p support. Not the best of both worlds or anything but a nice 1080p fallback option later on for games that don't demand high res or that I don't have the gpu power to push high res

I chose 1440p 144Hz recently over 4k 60Hz. And fluidity is more important for me, but I will be thinking about getting a 4k monitor for productivity later on

I vote IPS 4K 60Hz with gsync/freesync.

Anything 40-60 fps properly sync'd looks smooth enough to me, single GPUs are getting to that level of performance at 4K, and the advantages of 4K in terms of PPI and productivity are huge.

Of course if you are a competitive gamer, then go with a higher refresh.

Depends on what you play. If you tend to go with RPG's/Strategy Games... 4K and it's not even close. If you're into action games and first person shooters, 1440p, 144hz. To get 60 fps @ 4k and above 120 fps @ 1440p will need about the same GPU setup.

That would still fall into an opinion, as an RPG gamer, high FPS is still much more important to me than high res. Any game that has a 1st person or over the shoulder view is much more fluid when you turn and move with higher FPS. It is not about competitiveness, but the fluidity of motion. The low latency also makes mouse movements feel more connected to you. It gives a freeing feel to me when the mouse has such low latency and fluid motion.

I play Dota 2 at 100Hz 1440p at home, but on a 60Hz monitor at my friend's place on LAN night. 60Hz is gross. It takes me at least a game to adjust to the worse refresh rate every week... I can only imagine how smooth 144Hz is.

Considering you need at least a 980 Ti to game at reasonable framerates at 4K, and that no games are optimized/designed to run at that resolution, I see very little advantage in 4K/60Hz.

1440/144 all the way.

Please tell me how higher than 60 fps is necessary on your typical RPG. Let's say The Witcher 3.

The only answer: try both and see which you prefer. This is largely a personal preference. Personally, and in my experience with others in general, 4K @ 60Hz, it's not even a contest. I feel like I'm reiterating the same argument from 6+ years ago when 2560x1600p monitors were first becoming a thing for gamers; back then it was 1080p @ 120/144Hz vs 2560x1600p. Presently, I've yet to see someone physically sit down behind a proper 4K gaming setup and not say something along the lines of "holy crap, my life is a lie." I feel like the lower res/higher FPS answer is just a cop out because people don't understand the alternative. Nothing makes a game come alive like higher resolution; higher FPS is nice, but I'm not sure where the equation of "lower FPS = no fluidity" came from - games can be perfectly fluid at lower FPS, it's a frametime consistency thing more than the number itself. Also, good luck finding a CPU that can churn out 144FPS in many modern games.

Think about this OP, you can enjoy the very nice resolution of 1440 today at 144hz and in a couple years you can laugh your way into 4K heaven when 4K 120/144hz is here

Agree!

OP, do what I do get 3 1080p monitor and do triple gaming, it going to be the most immersive experience you'll ever get next to VR and 4K. I'll buy 4K when it become mainstream.

This is not a bad way to go, you can get three 120 or 144hz monitors and for the games you want high fps on just revert to the middle 1080 panel.

I think it the best bang for your buck if you have the desk space. Plus you will get so much work done it insane.

Where did I say it was necessary? I said I prefer it due to higher fluidity and lower latency, which makes mouse movements feel a lot more connected to my hand. No one "needs" higher FPS/hz or higher resolution, except perhaps in my case, as I get sick if I have lower than 75 FPS in most 1st person and over the shoulder view games that are mouse driven.

These are opinions, and in my opinion, fluid motion feels better than higher image quality.
