144hz/1440p is even more demanding from a bandwidth perspective so that means your choice of cables is pretty limited. display port 1.2 is clearly inferior to hdmi 2.0 in terms of cable voltage at this point which means some pretty terribly small number cable choices for such a high bandwidth application. It's actually easier to get a signal 4k60 from DP than 1440p/144hz.
As someone looking at the same displays as OP, is 144Hz more noticable than 4K over 1440p/144Hz or more enjoyable? If yes, how would you descibe the differences?1440 144hz all the way.
Depends on what you play. If you tend to go with RPG's/Strategy Games... 4K and it's not even close. If you're into action games and first person shooters, 1440p, 144hz. To get 60 fps @ 4k and above 120 fps @ 1440p will need about the same GPU setup.

Please tell me how higher than 60 fps is necessary on your typical RPG. Let's say The Witcher 3.That would still fall into an opinion, as an RPG gamer, high FPS is still much more important to me than high res. Any game that has a 1st person or over the shoulder view is much more fluid when you turn and move with higher FPS. It is not about competitiveness, but the fluidity of motion. The low latency also makes mouse movements feel more connected to you. It gives a freeing feel to me when the mouse has such low latency and fluid motion.

The only answer: try both and see which you prefer. This is largely a personal preference. Personally, and in my experience with others in general, 4K @ 60Hz, it's not even a contest. I feel like I'm reiterating the same argument from 6+ years ago when 2560x1600p monitors were first becoming a thing for gamers; back then it was 1080p @ 120/144Hz vs 2560x1600p. Presently, I've yet to see someone physically sit down behind a proper 4K gaming setup and not say something along the lines of "holy crap, my life is a lie." I feel like the lower res/higher FPS answer is just a cop out because people don't understand the alternative. Nothing makes a game come alive like higher resolution; higher FPS is nice, but I'm not sure where the equation of "lower FPS = no fluidity" came from - games can be perfectly fluid at lower FPS, it's a frametime consistency thing more than the number itself. Also, good luck finding a CPU that can churn out 144FPS in many modern games. So what are people going to favour...
I cant decide between fluid fps and higher detail.

Agree!
OP, do what I do get 3 1080p monitor and do triple gaming, it going to be the most immersive experience you'll ever get next to VR and 4K. I'll buy 4K when it become mainstream.
This is not a bad way to go, you can get three 120 or 144hz monitors and for the games you want high fps on just revert to the middle 1080 panel.
