Are you prepared to spend a bit more?

I like the Dell U2713HM IPS. It's around $590
There is also the Dell UltraSharp U2711 which is around $625
Some people like PLS and Asus has the PB278Q around $550
Monoprice has their own branded 27" IPS 1440p monitor for $483

The nice thing about Monoprice is they use the A-1 panels but they do not use any that have defective pixels and anomalies. They select the best panels and reject the ones with issues. Plus they have great customer service. So if you need to save a few bux that is not a bad option. Dell offers more features and arguably better color since it comes calibrated from the factory. Apple also has a 27" 1440p display but they want $1000 for it.

AT reviewed the Monoprice recently and it was crap.

If it is too bothersome play at @1080P (I wouldn't recommend it though).Which games are giving you issues currently?

How much better would a 660ti SLI be than a 6970 crossfire? My wifes computer has a 660ti in it and she doesn't game. I could always pull that out and put it in mine and purchase another 660ti cheap and put one of my 6970's in hers. I'm guessing it wouldn't be a huge improvement and not worth the hassle. I plan on buying something else by next summer anyways.

If you need more raw power you can always go that route.

1440p would be a awesome experience, hoping with 4k here that perhaps a 27"1440p can be affordable sometime before the end of this decade and i am talking about a $300 27'' 1440p dell ultrasharp as i won't let my u2412m go so easily.

Compared to what? The Korean panels? Cause that is the only thing it should be compared to. It is a Korean import sold by a US company with some customer service attached to it.

Compared to Nixeus and Dell.

LOL, you are more likely to get a non defective korean panel the first time than a dell

dell is really failing with the new monitors it seems

I concur but I was talking about IQ in general.

Hrm...see I haven't really researched dell panels lately cause I am not in the market. That kind of sucks when they demand a price premium.

With regard to the OP's original question, I'd say it really depends on what you consider acceptable frame rates as that's very subjective. Yes, you're going to take a hit compared to 1080P -- you can't increase pixels by 75% and expect the same performance. I'd submit it also depends on what refresh rate you're running as well.

I run my X270OC @ 96 Hz, and as such I want to see 96 FPS or more in game. My single 680 did this pretty much no problem at my previous resolution of 16x12, but struggles to do that at 1440P unless I turn some things down in some of the games I play.

I knew going to 1440P @ 96-120 Hz was basically going to require a dual graphics solution to achieve the settings I wanted -- I'll be going SLI as soon as we find out how much VRAM BF4 requires @ 1440p.

TLDR - 1440p is awesome, especially at elevated refresh rates. You'll need better than average hardware to make it shine, or else I don't really see the point of upgrading in the first place. My 2¢.

Please stop referring to A- IPS panels from LG as 'defective' - it's simply not true. Also, AT's thoughts about how the Monoprice was less than impressive were not clearly panel related

Gaming on my Achieva Shimian Lite 27" 2560 x 1440 is great especially with 2 GTX670s in SLI (rig1 below). The depth and quality of color is really what I notice. Smaller text isn't a problem with gaming. As with other things "seeing is believing". If you have a chance to compare a 1080 vs 1440 monitor you will notice the difference immediately. With 2 670s in SLI fps is NOT an issue.

I am hopping I can get a Korean monitor with the Samsung PLS panel around Xmas time...

They are getting cheap with perfect pixels.

I am getting tired of 1080P......

Who said defective? I was using monoprice's terminology in calling them A -1.

Also is there any comparison between the LG IPS screens and the Samsung PLS?

Yep. I don't know what happened to their QC. Or maybe it's LG's fault with their manufacturing of the new 27" and 30" panels.

I bought three Ultrashraps before my U2713HM (two 2412 and one 2211) and never had a single issue with any of them.

Thanks. I am trying to find someone with the tools to do a comparison for color accuracy etc who has done a comparison. I find a bunch of forum posts with general "I like this vs that" but nothing with the proper tools for a technical review.

I think its mostly exaggeration. I played on a native 1440x900 screen and going 1080 in and of itself did not offer some magical image quality difference. its simply better because you get much more screen to work with. physically and more pixels. even 1440x900 still looks perfectly fine on screen where that that is native. its just to damn small of course to be useful nowadays.

Are you just trolling or what? 900p to 1080p is half the increase compared to 1080p to 1440p.
1440p: 3,686,400 (27", 109 ppi)
1080p: 2,073,600 (24", 91 ppi)
900p: 1,400,000 (22", 83 ppi)
