I would buy three monitors like this for my 7970 and have a jolly time. 120hz at perhaps a lower price point than the current market would be very interesting.

Side note, can you use adapters to go to DVI or VGA from DP?

You need DP on the video card to use DP on the monitor.

You can use DVI on monitor with with DP on the video card with the right cable/adapter.

This is a hard and fast rule without a ~$100 adapter, which makes the endeavor pointless.

I found this out the hard way with some recent Dell Ultrasharps that I thought would be able to handle to two digital inputs. They can, but the second HAS to be DP.

What I want is a high resolution IPS 120Hz monitor. Presumably display port is a necessity of that as well to support the bandwidth demands.

Whether it has DP only isn't important to me. It's the best overall connection and leaving it off makes your hardware look second rate. DP out would be a great feature, IMO.

honestly, using a DVI-DL cable gets old on my monitor. I have overlords 120hz PCB coming soon and even my 24ga dvi-dl will be maxed out.

I'd be happy to not use a dual link DVI cable for 1440p@120hz. The reasonable priced cables (monoprice) are quite chunky and annoying to use.

We have had DP since 5xxx series in 2009, anyone in the market for a 1440p display at that refresh rate will have the appropriate video card. Hell even bottom end Dell desktops are shipping with DP on board.

Because of this thread I tried my display port cable on my 3011. Forgot I had it because my 580's didn't have display port. Before on DVI going through the monitor presets I didn't see that much difference, but now they just pop from one to the next. Definitely staying with display port.

I have nothing against DP, just about every current video card has display ports on it.

Although I would like it to have TWO DP ports. As I share displays across two machines typically.

DP only would be fine with me and if it was 120Hz and 1440p I would definitely be interested. However, I would need at least (2) DP connectors.

-KeithP

DP supports 1600P @ 120hz @30bpp. It has plenty of bandwidth to support 1440P @ 120hz...

DP 1.2 has ~17.2Gbps and 1600P @120hz is ~15Gbps. 1440P is obviously less than that...

Edit: Any modern monitor without DP is actually pretty deficient. It is the best connection for multi-monitor displays (mini-DP or DP from video card is an efficient layout), supports chaining, and has the best bandwidth available. HDMI or DVI is pretty sub-standard in comparison.

What he said. That's in addition to DVI-DL not being an active standard - the governing body overseeing it disbanded over 10 years ago. It's not an active standard and will not be updated. So I can't see DVI having much of a future beyond legacy once 4k displays become common place. Admittedly, 4k becoming common may be years away.

better yet. How about real 1440P or 1600P 120hz monitors that support 120hz oficially w/o needing patched drivers, OC boards with scan line artifacts.

No clue why monitor manufacturers don't do it. There's obviously a market.

I tried to switch to DP a while back and was burned by the non-compliant cable problem, which really turned me off it. I had the weirdest issues with my computer - it wouldn't cold boot with two monitors plugged in, but it was fine if you booted then plugged in the monitors.

I already have a DVI 1440p monitor but would love a 1440p DP monitor if it would do 120hz.

Rather perplexing isn't it? Same thing with TV's, I think that new 4K Seiki may be the first ever TV to accept 120Hz PC input at 1080P...

Last I read they were looking into whether this was another direction worth going or if they should be trying to get on the Lightboost train.

When I bought my first 27" 1440 Monitor last year, my primary choice was to go DP although I had the option of DVI ..
I wouldn't mind buying the same monitor if it happened to be DP only.

However, keep in mind that Multi-monitor users (e.g. Eyefinity) might hesitate getting DP only monitors as most graphics card don't exceed 2 mDP ports .. So for 3 monitor setup you need at least one monitor to support DVI

Hopefully anyone dumping that kind of money into such a project knows what they'll need to do to make it all work. If they don't do that minor amount of research then shame on them.
