Course - it's not only the drives that are loud. 15K do need some cooling, and the fans usually get to you too, so even if the HD's were quiet, you'd still have high-power fans to deal with.

The holy grail = very fast and very quiet hard drive. Unfortunately, in the real world, one has to make compromises.

Caught between a rock and a hard place..
I've got 3 X15 36LPs in my PC (raid-5 setup - Adaptec SCSI RAID 5400S) and it's loud as hell! but the perfomance is worth it imo. Avg transfer rate hangs around ~50-60ish (MB/s). And with access times <5ms, that's pretty sweet, huh?
As far as the noise. I got used to it.. even though it took a long ass time.
And temperatures.. don't get me started. I was pissed when I swapped one of these in for my 7200 barracuda4... it raised the case temps almost 10C, and since it's sitting right behind the intake fan in the front, it raised the temps of my athlon too, and that's almost hitting 100C. It's sitting at like 92 right now. With the 3 in it right now, proc temp is sitting at 109C, and case temp is 81C.
And this is in a huge ass case too. It's an Inwin (don't remember model#) that has 6 external 5 1/4" bays, 2 external 3 1/2" bays, and there's a cage below that that can swivel out and it has 2 X15s in it right now, and the third is sitting right at the bottom of the case, right in front of the fan.
LoL.. and I leave my PC on almost 24/7... is that baadd??

Are you sure those temps are in Celsius? If they are, your processor would have melted by now.
