Cheetahs perform intermittent idle head seeks to prevent platter damage. There is nothing you can do to stop it unless you find a way to muffle the sound.

Pariah, by intermittent do you mean every 15 seconds or less?

I noticed my cheetah also makes cha cha cha every 15 seconds or so.

Perfmon in windows shows it writes a very small amount of data.

Is this normal?

It shouldn't be that often. Seagate says it should be every 45 seconds or a minute depending on which generation X15 you have, I don't recall which is for which. It should not be writing, it's just a head seek to move it to a different spot on the platter.

Mine does the exact same thing.

On off on off.

I didn't notice this until I moved the drive out of its cooling case to a cooling bay.

Seems to be 15 second intervals.

Same sort of comment as if saying that servers are more noisy than desktops. "Duh - course they are" comes to mind.

15k RPM == a lot of revs == a lot of noise.

You can get reasonably quiet 7200 rpm IDE drives, but 15K SCSI - no way. I've yet to hear a quiet 10K drive, not to say 15K.

Course - it's not only the drives that are loud. 15K do need some cooling, and the fans usually get to you too, so even if the HD's were quiet, you'd still have high-power fans to deal with.

Caught between a rock and a hard place..

I've got 3 X15 36LPs in my PC (raid-5 setup - Adaptec SCSI RAID 5400S) and it's loud as hell! but the perfomance is worth it imo. Avg transfer rate hangs around ~50-60ish (MB/s). And with access times <5ms, that's pretty sweet, huh?

As far as the noise. I got used to it.. even though it took a long ass time.

And temperatures.. don't get me started. I was pissed when I swapped one of these in for my 7200 barracuda4... it raised the case temps almost 10C, and since it's sitting right behind the intake fan in the front, it raised the temps of my athlon too, and that's almost hitting 100C. It's sitting at like 92 right now. With the 3 in it right now, proc temp is sitting at 109C, and case temp is 81C.

And this is in a huge ass case too. It's an Inwin (don't remember model#) that has 6 external 5 1/4" bays, 2 external 3 1/2" bays, and there's a cage below that that can swivel out and it has 2 X15s in it right now, and the third is sitting right at the bottom of the case, right in front of the fan.

LoL.. and I leave my PC on almost 24/7... is that baadd??

The holy grail = very fast and very quiet hard drive. Unfortunately, in the real world, one has to make compromises.

If your running windows XP then thats why it's so frequent, nobody can figure out how to stop it. XP's SCSI performance BLOWS when it comes to write speed as well. SCSI= noise and thats the bottom line.

Are you sure those temps are in Celsius? If they are, your processor would have melted by now.

Yeah man, 81c for a case is hella hot. All the plastic on your case would melt =0 Something must be wrong with your motherboard.
