Cable is really ramping up speed grades I hope DSL can keep up. SBC won't even offer 6.0 for whatever reasons.

The 15/3 speed grade is being offered at close to the 1.5 price of DSL.

Where are you at?

Here, they charge $60 a month for 5/1 and $50 for 4/768, while I can get 3/768 DSL for $25.

That and since we had started having so many problems with our cable internet (was way too slow, like not even getting 1Mb down, and then someone actually broke into the main splitter of the building and started stealing our cable) we switched to SBC which has been problem free for us. We only get about 1.5-2 most of the time, but its still much faster than we really almost ever got with our cable connection.

i don't believe we'll come to that point. the bandwidth will always be useful for something. how do you think HD cable works?

that's just the point I'm making, I also have IPTV service over that VDSL but when you talk about internet speed there is no point in having 15Mb just for the internet

What do you need that much speed for?

Really I would go with DSL because I would never buy cable TV so I would not be able to get in on a bundle deal and DSL is cheaper even without a phone deal (and I would always want a landline for fax anyhow).

I hate dial-up.

Oh man, I'd just opt not to use the internet. I dont even know anyone or anywhere in my life that still has dialup.

The internet is not just simple websites now. Online music selling is huge now, and itunes just started selling shows for their ipods. In about 5 years, i wouldn't be surprised that we'll be able to legitimately download entire shows in HD content. And it's only a matter of time when the first movie or TV show will only be broadcast over the internet (initially, instead of TV or theatres)

DSL can theoretically scale to 768Mb/s

Sdsl/vdsl/idsl/adsl and length of runs and such all keep it theorectical

Why do places like Japan and Korea have such high speeds? What drives their needs for bandwidth? More and more programs utilize high bandwidth pipes and we're able to send more data and video faster and faster. Hopefully one day while we'll be able to talk to people through video cameras without all that stuttering. Hopefully the bandwidth will be plentiful and it will seem as though we're actually there.

Us Northerners have really fallen behind in the speed wars. Now the best we have is maybe 8mbits. The major Isp fvckers in Toronto top out around 6mbits. I'm amazed how many places in the states are now in the teens and higher. It seemed to happen so fast for you guys.

In NJ we have Optimu online which offers a 9-10mbps for $45 a month.
The upload speed is capped at 20kbps
I think they are having problems with their lines because their digital cable service freezes for a few seconds quite often when I'm watching movies

Verizon FIOS is not available in my area yet, but when it does I'll switch service!

Says you, I wanted to move a bunch of Tiff image files to someone and it's pretty hard on the lame ass upload speed of cable or DSL.

10 megabits upload is minimum and 100 megabits is what we should be close to by now.

I was just going to mention I thought Japan and Korea already had a bunch of shows that they already have only online?

I also know a lot of game shows are hosted online as well. Or at least you can download and watch past shows for a fee and what not. I had a Korean friend staying with me my freshmen year of college, and he would always go to Korean sites and play back shows with his account he had.

Starcraft VOD's i think? (ring a bell anyone?)
