this is a pretty awesome deal in fact.

especially with 2gb ram. now i dont think anyone actually NEEDS 2gb ram in a laptop with only an x1400. personally i'd sell the ram (go for $85ish on ebay a piece) and buy much cheaper 2x512mb ddr for about $30 a piece on ebay.

save another $100 there.

makes the macbook pro 1.66 look really expensive too, since that is $1999 and has only 512mb of ddr2 standard and only 80gb instad of 120 on the acer for that ridiculous price. the macbook pro has an x1600 pro though, but still...if you had to get 2gb of ram in a macbook pro thats already nearly $2200 (and you'd have a 512mb stick left over)

i guess this basically means a license for os x is basically about $800-900? oh wait apple coolness factor +$600

Well honestly selling the 2x1GB for 2x512MB is not the smartest move. If you want to sell the RAM that much, sell only a single 1GB stick and keep the other one. Going through the hassle of selling BOTH sticks and having to buy 2x512MB isn't wise as you then have NO open slots left.

Besides, 2GB can do wonders for how smooth a system feels. If you don't need 2GB now, you might next year. I just wouldn't bother

Personally I'd love to get a T60 and when 2GB DDR2 SODIMM modules come out, deck it with 4GB :Q

I picked up one of these puppies yesterday and its pretty darn decent.

Good points: The screen is gorgeous; it comes with this "crystalbrite" screen (basically a very shiny reflective finish on the lcd) kinda similiar to what sony coats on their vaio's. I don't mind the resolution, simply b/c I don't want to squint too hard to read on the lappy. Plus, I'm using a 17" widescreen lcd monitor at home and its at the same native resolution so theres not much of an adjustment for my eyes. 2gigs of memory is very nice, especially considering that they load it up with their junkware, and the hard drive is fast and quiet (comes with a nice seagate 5400rpm sata drive). The video card is not too bad, I'm playing guildwars, ut2k4 with no problems (effects turned on medium-high settings). Haven't loaded up HL2 or BF2 yet, but its feels a lot like the missus' 9700 mobility. The wifi is freaking insane , I'm getting signals from all over the place now. Slot-loaded dvd burner is good too.

Bad points: The keyboard feels a little bit mushy and seems almost too sensitive. Its seems kinda cheap compared to the rest of the lappy. The crystalbrite screen is pretty and great for movies, but I personally like a flat finish on the lcd (less glare). The 120gb HD is partioned into 3 (hidden restore,c:, and d: ) drives, and its in FAT32! Argh, Acer laptops seems to love FAT32. No restore CD's/DVD's; when you first boot up, it takes about 30 min's to setup all its software and then backs up your pc (you supply the 5 cd's or 1 dvd).

Its not as nice as the missus' acer ferrari 3400 lappy, but its still a decent laptop. Nice speedy cpu, quiet and fast hd, ok graphics, bluetooth, wifi, s-video+vga+dvi outputs, usb's on BOTH sides of the lappy, firewire, card reader. heh, I do miss that super glossy red finish on the ferrari though, but for 1300 bucks, I have some leftover change to find some guy to paint and clearcoat for me

So what about the X700 mobile? I'm getting confused by the numbering convention from ATI |

I would love to pick this up as a DTR. Wonder if it could display 1920x1080 on the DVI out or do 1080p video from WMV-HD. Would probably be in my home if I could find this info out. I don't know much about the notebook video cards so thought I'd ask/suggest anyone to try it if they could.

I don't see why it wouldn't... My HDTV only accepts 720p or 1080i, so I can't test for you though...

Anyone worried about the 2-4 week delivery time? You only have a month to do the eRebate

It displays perfectly on our work 2005FPW (1680X1050), so I see no problem extending it out to 1920X1080

For those that picked up the laptop, how are you liking the screen resolution? I'm running 1920 x 1200 on a 15.4" and am currently loving it. Definately opt for a higher resolution screen if you plan to do gaming.

It has 128MB discrete and up to 256MB additional shared (i.e. Hypermemory). Nothing wrong with that

It actually seems it is up to 384MB shared memory, but wouldn't that memory be much slower than the on-board memory? I wonder how that works, combining on-board RAM with system ram that may run at totally different speed. Probably not too well.

Won't make a huge diff, esp with a slow GPU. At best, I'd say it will reduce stuttering with large textures.

It's hard to adjust. I have a 2405FPW for my desktop (1920x1200) and to go from that to 1280x800 sucks.
