Good points: The screen is gorgeous; it comes with this "crystalbrite" screen (basically a very shiny reflective finish on the lcd) kinda similiar to what sony coats on their vaio's. I don't mind the resolution, simply b/c I don't want to squint too hard to read on the lappy. Plus, I'm using a 17" widescreen lcd monitor at home and its at the same native resolution so theres not much of an adjustment for my eyes. 2gigs of memory is very nice, especially considering that they load it up with their junkware, and the hard drive is fast and quiet (comes with a nice seagate 5400rpm sata drive). The video card is not too bad, I'm playing guildwars, ut2k4 with no problems (effects turned on medium-high settings). Haven't loaded up HL2 or BF2 yet, but its feels a lot like the missus' 9700 mobility. The wifi is freaking insane , I'm getting signals from all over the place now. Slot-loaded dvd burner is good too.

Bad points: The keyboard feels a little bit mushy and seems almost too sensitive. Its seems kinda cheap compared to the rest of the lappy. The crystalbrite screen is pretty and great for movies, but I personally like a flat finish on the lcd (less glare). The 120gb HD is partioned into 3 (hidden restore,c:, and d: ) drives, and its in FAT32! Argh, Acer laptops seems to love FAT32. No restore CD's/DVD's; when you first boot up, it takes about 30 min's to setup all its software and then backs up your pc (you supply the 5 cd's or 1 dvd).

Its not as nice as the missus' acer ferrari 3400 lappy, but its still a decent laptop. Nice speedy cpu, quiet and fast hd, ok graphics, bluetooth, wifi, s-video+vga+dvi outputs, usb's on BOTH sides of the lappy, firewire, card reader. heh, I do miss that super glossy red finish on the ferrari though, but for 1300 bucks, I have some leftover change to find some guy to paint and clearcoat for me

From the looks of the ads for next week, this laptop becomes even MORE of a steal.

In the ad for Feb. 12-18, this laptop is:

$1499.99 - $50 Instant Savings - $150 eRebate = $1299.99!

I'm really tempted now, but I just bought my current Acer laptop in the summer of 2005..and it's been great.

In-stock up here in Anchorage.

I can sell my HP zv6000 laptop right now for $700 (Athlon 64 2800+, 1gig DDR, 60gig 5400, ATI 200M, etc)

Would this be a worthwhile, $800 upgrade?

$800 is a bit steep, but this will be a "good for very long time" laptop if you don't game. The discrete GPU will support Vista in all its glory, it will have good high def decoding, and the Core Duo will run through anything you throw at it. 2GB RAM is plenty, so you only might want to change out the HDD eventually! Dual layer DVDRW too. Something for everyone If you don't mind the form factor it is great!

Also consider you can build barebones Core Duo laptops too:

For those who want Core Duo on a diet, NCIX.com has a 1GB/100GB version for CDN$1500, and a 512MB/80GB/GMA950 one for CDN$1200.

Hmm... In stock at my local CompUSA, but not available for online order pickup...

Should it be the same price in store?

My wife needs a new laptop and we just got our state tax return...

The only negative I can see is that my wife wants a smaller laptop - Like the Compaq ones with the 14" widescreen.

I wonder if this would be too big/too heavy for what she wants...

Also, I had been planning on getting her a Turion-64 based system, since it is a 64-bit processor...

That's a question for her -- some people don't like the 15.4" size. Check out the Compaq V2000 or HP dv1000 for some solid, cheap 14" widescreen's. There's also the L2000, which is Turion based and a good price.

I've seen that Compaq and I think that HP - Perfect size for what she wants. But DAMN this Acer is LOADED!

Probably can't do better for the price...
