15.4" widescreen square area

Hi,

After calculating it with a 16:9 ratio, I only find about 100 square inches. This is about the same as a 14" square LCD correct?

Isn't it misleading for manufacturers to advertise with diagonal lengths when total square area is more useful?

Hi webhappy, welcome to AT.

Yes, I get 101.42 square inches for a 15.4" widescreen area and 95.43 square inches for a 14.1" screen with a 4:3 length to height ratio.

I guess it's not "misleading" per se as the fact that we normally do use the diagonal to measure screen sizes. And people should combine the diagonal with the fact that widescreens have less area compared to a 4:3 with the same diagonal length to determine what screen they want to buy.

That's an interesting argument. I use my computer a ton for programming and word-processing. Isn't widescreen kinda bad for editing text?

Depends on the resolution.

My Dell i8600 15.4" has 1680x1050 resolution. One thing I liked about coding was one of my lines goes on for a LONG time. The best 15.4" screens have 1940x1440 resolution.

many people prefer it for that. dvds aren't bad either. think when you're working on something. do you prefer the two documents side by side or aligned vertically. use a 15" or 17" powerbook and you'll find you start to work with two windows in a side by side fashion. it also makes a nice laptop form factor for the screen size, especially on a plane.

Yup. Widescreen works great for coding + debugging.

Or writing a paper, and looking up research on the net at the same time.

When will we start to see 16:9 LCD for desktops? I'm looking to buy an LCD later in the year and would love a 17" LCD in 16:9 format.

A lil OT here but I find it really annoying that I just got my new widescreen TV and when I watch DVD's I still get the black bars. I found out about how there are different aspect ratios which really pisses me off, why can't we just set 1.85:1(or is it 2.35:1, don't really remember whichever is for 16:9) as the standard??????????????
