They were comapring thie 75 GXP's to the Maxtor 60GB from another thread I think . Even IF the Maxtor were slightly faster (which it generally isn't), you would have to be drunk or on a weeklong liquid diet like me to compare maxtor to ibm for hard drives on any day. If you just need one decent sized hard drive, this is a very good deal. As always with HD, pay a little more and you will get a lot more capacity. I have seen a few of these in action by the way and I have never (not) heard such a quiet drive, nor had such a responsive one.
For those on speed kicks, this is one of the rare times you can get 2 top of the line drives for 150 for striping (assuming it works with your RAID controller)

Amen, lzpoof.

I have this drive, and am very impressed with it.

Considering grabbing another for a RAID setup. More for the hell of it than anything else.

I bought a bunch of the same drive from a place on Yahoo shopping for $60 a few weeks ago, and he still has them: link

I am not affiliated with this company in any way other than being a satisfied customer.

Note that these are OEM with an HP name but clearly an IBM label on them (and you can see the IBM part number). Shipping was kind of high ($10+ for one of them), but I bought 15 of them for work. He told me he took them out of HP systems that they were selling to customers but who wanted larger drives.

I honestly think maxtor drives are better. I have 2 ibm 75gxp 45gb hard drives in raid 0 and I hear so much about them breaking down. I dont hear as many bad complaints about maxtor. Maxtor drives are cheaper, and they have a much better warranty program. I dont think that the IBM's are noticably faster than maxtor's. It cannot justify the price.

I know this doesn't fully pertain to the thread, but I this is my 2 cents. I bought the IBM 60gig about two months ago, and am extremely happy with it, just BEWARE that if your mobo runs AWARD BIOS, it will not recognize the drive. This is a known issue on IBM's website, and I think AWARD's site too. I ended up having to put this On-Track bios software on it, and now that I want to put the drive in a different pc, I'm having one hell of a time getting the On-Track stuff off. By the way, I think this drive identification problem is only for drives bigger than 30 gig, but dont quote me on that.

very true mustang, just be wary of what bios you have...ibm and award dont like to play nice...for someone running Award bios, take my advice and buy maxtor, you dont really notice a speed difference and you wont have to screw around with the bios.

don't they have 40 gig 60gxp's for 114 at newegg? courtesy of techbargains?

I personally think IBMs are a little faster, and a little higher-end, but Maxtor is excellent too. Never had either of them fail on me. I'll take either of them over anything else right now, until if and when Seagate starts playing nice and lower prices...

Its amazing how many people can get better drives by spending more money!! No f--- kidding!!!! Spend 79 and get a high perfomance harddrive, that is the bottom line. granted you could do better but if my budget is 80$ then I don't think i could.

Just make sure to keep your receipt when you buy an IBM drive.

Unlike Maxtor and Western Digital which only ask for the serial number of the drive for a return/replacement, IBM will give you a lot more hustles asking for the receipt and where you bought it.

I like my 75GXp, but I was also quite amazed with DiamondMax Pro I installed in my girl friend's computer.

Smoken dealio! I hate the fact that the small drives are almost as much as the big drives. I needs to find me a decent price on a 10 gig and it certainly better be south of 50 bones.

I have just finished modding a Maxtor ATA100 card, which I got for free after rebate, and made it a Promise FastTrack 100.

Now, it is time for me to decide whether I want to get this drive and pair it up with one I already have.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.

it'll be hard to find a drive with that small of capacity .. the platters are getting bigger.. and companies are actually kinda neutering drives as is by not putting on more heads to make the smaller ones. south of 50 will likely be a refurb or used. it'll be hard to find a new drive soon that's smaller than this. You may want to bite the bullet and go for the wd 30 GB if there's a sam's near you, else get this one.

EDIT: So no one thinks I'm threadcrapping, this is by far the best deal you will get on a sub 20GB drive ... although there are better ones on larger ones. The performance /price for this drive is the best out there. If you only need 15GB, go for it.. splurge a bit.

lzpoof,

Actually, 75GXP has a platter size of 15GB so it's not too bad as far as that is concerned. And it's still one of the fastest drives (probably the second after 60GX). However, I kind of agree with you that it's not quite worth getting it over a bigger drive for $10 - 20 more.

I probably just want to try it out with my newly modded Fasttrak, but it's probably not that good of an idea just to get 10% performace increase. I already have way to many drives in my system anyway.

Tydas - my point was that you can get a drive with 300% the capacity for less than 50% more than what you'd pay for the 15 gig. Considering that, this isn't a hot deal at all and you'd get more for your money if you saved up for the 40 gig, which, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, has three 15 gig platters.

This is only a hot deal if you consider its retail price only.

This is the first I've heard of a problem with the IBM Drives and Award BIOS. I just checked IBM's site and see no mention of it. In fact I checked my particular drive and the whole 75GXP family shows as being certified compatible with Award BIOS. I tried to check the Award/Phoenix site but it was a mess trying to find anything.

HERE is the compatibilty report on the 75GXP drives directly from IBM's site. It's in .pdf format so you will need Acrobat Reader to view it.

Shinerburke,

I'm not sure why you couldnt find the information on the IBM site, but in case you missed it, it is...

HERE.

The problem is that if you just plug the drive in, you are only going to be able to utilize 33 gig of it. There is a way around it, but it is just simply a pain to have to load the bios software on the drive, and I'm now realizing it's equally difficult to get it off.
