Hi all, I posted before to see if my PSU were able to run a 6870 before and got quick, quality responses. Thanks!

Theres a 6870 on sale on newegg and I'm tempted to buy it. Its a XFX so the lifetime warranty is a huge plus for me.

But my real question is should I wait? Someone told me about 7 series coming out and supposely 6870s should be cheaper. But how much cheaper? Should I just grab the one on sale now? Or wait a month or two to see where the prices are at?

As you maybe able to tell, I'm on a budget so the cheaper, the better.

Looking forward to reading replies, though this question is very....how to say.. simple?

149$ with "free shipping", and dirt3 game, seems pretty cheap for a 6870.

Closet performance card Nvidia has to it is probably the 560ti....
and they cost like 280$ (nearly twice as much $ for like ~4% more perf)

the 280$ figour is just from looking at newegg and 560ti prices.
Kinda expensive compaired to the value that 6870 offers.

It ll probably be months until there is a card in the same segment, and even then price probably wont drop that much. If your in dire need of a upg, go with the 6870... its a pretty good card for its price.

It is like this.

If you are sometimes frustrated when playing, buy the new card (by the way what card do you currently own?).

If you are having fun playing your games, you might wait.

Most likely the newer cards won't be cheaper than the 6870 (generally companies launch higher end cards before medium range). It could happen that somewhat faster cards like the GTX560Ti/GTX570 and the 6950/6970 drop a bit in price, but it is somewhat doubtful for the next couple of months.

The 6870 is a great price/performance card.

Get a 5870 for the same price instead.
If you can buy a 5870 new, this is a reasonable idea.

may I ask why? I'm not an experienced tech guy so i genuinely ask. I cant find any available on newegg either.

a friend says once in awhile theres a 'gem' within a series that can perform just as good or better than newer stuff. so this applies here?

well geez, I had a 8800gt which died after 2.5 yrs. now im using a 7900gs as a temporary.

im planning to buy a card to play future games (mainly guild wars 2 when that comes around...)

i really wanna know about the 5870. are there huge reasons i should get it over 6870?

The 6850 and 6870 use the same architecture as the 5850/5870.

The 6870/6850 actually have less resources than the 5870/5850 and make up somewhat for its less resources with better optimization and higher stock clocks (the 5870/5850 have, generally, more overclock head room).

5870 1600 shaders, 5850 1440 shaders, 6870 1120 shaders, 6850 960 shaders.

But the speed goes as 5870->6870->5850 (an OC 5850 will beat an OC 6870, though)->6850.

The 5870 consumes slightly more power, though.

Wasn't trying to be rude, that is my upgrade thought process.

Props for GW2.

This of communicating just with words and no expressions and intonations (and talking a foreign language on top, in my case), can sometimes lead to misunderstandings.

Stay away from used 5870/5850. They probably have been badly treated due to bitcoin mining craze.

If you can get one new for the same price get it otherwise I wouldn't lose too much time searching - it isn't that big of a difference,

Agreed. There were a bunch of 5870s that popped up on closeout sites like Bens Outlet, but most turned out to refurbished even though they were advertised as new.

Just don't worry about those. If you're coming from an 8800gt, all of these cards will be twice as fast. The 6850 is 2x faster, the 5850 is 2.2x faster, the 6870 is 2.3x faster, and the 5870 is 2.4x faster.

Enjoy, I got one for my other half last month. It was a very good buy for the cash.

Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Fallout New Vegas are easy recommendations. Perhaps Deux Ex Invisible War, Mass Effect 2 and Starcraft 2 would also be to your liking.

Why would that be? 20% better performance than a GTX580 for $200 less?
It would actually be more than 20% better than a GTX 580 if there was a crossfire profile for the game, if that particular game scales well, AND, if the conditions are right within the game itself.

Multi GPU sucks. The performance fluctuations are a deal breaker for me. What really started annoying me was the realization of how much energy my system was wasting when I wasn't gaming. With multiple monitors my GTX 460s didn't clock down properly and ran pig rich.

Eh...I've had zero problems with using Crossfire besides the fact that AMD took a while to release the Skyrim CAPs.

Which PS, wasn't a problem because:

a. The game ran perfectly fine in one card
b. The oblivion CAP worked.

So actually, I disagree. Multi-GPU + Saving $200+ = Not sucking.

You know what, I'm glad you're happy with your setup. The 768mb of vram on my cards probably held me back somewhat. That said, I'm quite content having gone back to a single card. I eagerly await the "new" GTX 460 that will cost $100 and give me at least double my current performance. I used to drop $200 on a GPU but I've decided to cut back. The progress is just too slow now in terms of what they're coming out with. My GTX 460 will probably still be relevant in another year based on the way things are crawling along.

Looking at recent historical trends I can almost guarantee you there will be no 7 series card that does 6870 performance at $150.
