Just to warn those who are interested.....a bit more info:

Not only do you have to buy the one book (not a big deal) but you will also be sent a mailing every 3 weeks with the "Main Selection" of the month. If you do not respond to the mailing you will automatically be sent the book and charged accordingly (up to 18 times a year). If you think you can handle the pain in the a$$ of sending in the cards then this is for you but if you are like me (I have a hard enough time remembering my CC bill ) then this might take a little more review.

ERJ, They actually make it a little easier for you. You can send the 'No thanks' notice via their website. You don't even have to find a stamp.

You pay for your stuff after you receive it. The bill will be included with the books. After you get the bill, you can pay the bill online.

As cycloscott mentioned, you can reply to the "selection of the month" things online.

As soon as I get my books, though, I plan on buying the one and cancelling. The book named "A Sigh of Relief: The First-Aid Handbook for Childhood Emergencies (840710)" in the Special Interest section (yes, its for some reason lited on the tech books list) is only $4.99 and will fulfill the requirement nicely. There might be a cheaper book. I didn't look all the way.

Well Actually that is very good deal..
I've been a member of that book club for almost a year now.
The process to get your book will take a while, I wait almost 3 weeks to got my books. But it's worth it.
I got 3 oracle book worh 120 bucks for 18.89 bucks. And every time you refer a friend and they approved it you will also got 3 free book.
As cycloscott said, you can cancel their offer through web. It's that easy.

yeah, this book club is an excellent deal. I've been a member twice. Although i don't really recommend signing others up--send 'em on to the website they get a better deal there (unless you just don't like the person or are horribly greedy). Just my thoughts of course.

Something to keep in mind is that some books count as more than one. For example I ordered:

Title Book Code Publisher's Price # of Selections
3D Game Programming with C++, Gold Book 886473 $49.99 1
Web Database Developer's Guide with
Visual Basic 5/C/C++ Programmer's Reference 863852 $76.98 2
XML Bible 135236 $49.99 1
Total $176.96 4

I joined booksonline couple years ago. It was get 4 books at $1 and then buy 3 more in 2 years. However, they screwed up and my membership in about 9 months. So I got 4 books for a buck + s/h, and nothing more to buy. If you buy books regularly, thier price is actually pretty OK.

I'm going to join and I need some more general stuff. I'm a CS major but I don't know much right now. Any recommendations for books on programming in C++, java, overclocking, general computer knowledge and understanding. Oh yeah. They have to be at the site.

Thanks.

When I buy books I always check out the readers reviews at amazon.com. A bunch of these books have 5/5 stars on the first review and like 1.5/5 or whatever on the rest of the reviews. In other words someone is giving them steller reviews for sale but they really suck. For instance take a look at the Embedded C book on amazon.com and see the interesting reviews.

None of the books are of particularly good quality it would appear...

EDIT: I was looking primarily at the Oracle 8i books (they had the same type of reviews as the Embedded C book). Some of the Linux books are good but buyer beware.

what's up guys..

this place could be a very hassle in the long run. Here is my personal experience from them. Yes they promised to give you free books for everybook you order. The bad things are that if you don't cancel your book subscription every month then they keep shipping you the book they have on the list for every month and send you a bill for them. I received the books from them and i forgot to cancel it with them online so they billed me 3 books for around $150... Cuz you'll need to go online to cancel it if each month if you do not want to receive it. I did that before then i get lazy so i didn't cancel them then they keep on sending me the books, and each month i have to return it to them. I wrote on the return, that i moved and please cancel my subscription. Then each upcomming month they kept sending me the same thing over and over again... now i just ignore them.. ahhah. i still got the book they sent to me and the bill each month to ask for the money, and i didn't have time to go and return their books... this is suck..........

take care,

Giving this thread a bump to remind those of you who signed up for this club to hit their site and cancel the Featured Selection(s) before they ship... and while you're at it, you might want to take care of the required purchase to just get it over with.

Thanks for the tip, Juiio; that $4.99 book is still available.

I sent my request in to stop the shipment of their select book of the month. Gees, if I knew they were going to send their stuff every month, I wouldn't have joined. Reminds me of Columbia House.

I've been with this club for about 2 years and its pretty good. Every now and than they send you a coupon which you get buy one book and get the second book free of the same or lower value. As for book of the month thingy, you can decline the monthly selection on line. Takes a second. I bought quite a few books from them too. some of their books are cheaper than B&Noble and @mazon.

If it really works like BMG then if you receive a featured selection which you don't want, you should be able to write "refused" on the box and put it in your mailbox, that's all. Right?

I have had done business with this company,they are excellent.
As far as the "If you do not reply by" type of problems ,I stopped that by calling
and asking to be removed from future mailings.
They offered to set my account to only ship on demand.
BMG is no good, these guys are good..

I did this about two months ago. When I signed up it was 4 free books and buy one in a year. I order all 5 at one time. I have since recieved 3 and just got a letter today saying that since so many people have taken advantage of this deal that I have to pay for the book and then they will send it to me. At first this upset me, I've been waiting for 2 months now for the remaining 2 books and just got a letter from them They should have sent the book but I thought with any other retailer you pay first then recieve the goods so it isn't abnormal. so I'm going to prepay for the book. I guess all of this to say this deal is worth it if you are willing to wait awhile for your books, up to 3 months!
