Today, I bought a mattress from CostCo (thanks RossMAN!) and didn't want to pay the $100+ shipping charged from costco.com. Since my apartment is only 4 miles away from the store, I posted an ad on craigslist asking if anyone would be able to help me move the queen-sized mattress and boxspring during lunch.

A few people replied with quotes ranging from $40-150... and one guy offered to help me move for $10 (!!!), so I called him and we arranged to meet in front of the building. He was there on time, he and my fiance moved the mattress onto the truck, and he also helped unload. I ended up giving him $15 (all the cash I had onhand at the time), but was very happy with his help...

Yay for craigslist! Has anyone else had any positive buying/selling/help-getting experiences?

Never but thatnx for giving me this idea... I am moving to a new apartment next weekend and instead of renting uhaul I might give craiglist a try.:thumbsup:

Although they've established a site here in KC, it doesn't have very much exposure so it's not tremendously helpful. I am originally from the SF Bay Area and I'm so jealous of how Craigslist just thrives there. It exemplifies how I wish commerce would work in this country. No slick advertisements or marketing gimmicks... no greedy middle-men or collusion... just a small description, price, and picture(s) as needed. It really fosters a good attitude of buying and selling on an even playing field.

Of course I'm sure the newspapers absolutely hate it. I love that there's absolutely nothing they can do about it.

My parents have bought and sold stuff there and had 100% positive experiences.

Always a good resource for job hunting, (in the Philadelphia/NYC market). I will definately be using it when I'm outta college for job hunting.

I've met some really great people through craigslist... when my fiance and I needed help moving all our stuff from one apartment to another (couch, dining table and chairs, TV, bookshelves, etc.), we posted and ad on craigslist and this great guy named Carter replied, offering to help us move with his truck for $10 an hour.

The poor guy had to help my poor fiance move a HUGE sofa bed down 3 flights of stairs because the elevator didn't work, and the job took almost 3 hours with four trips back and forth. I ended up giving him $60 ($20/hour), but it would have taken so much longer and been so much pricier had I just rented a UHaul, hired a moving service, etc.

Talked to the guy for a bit... turns out he moved out to LA from Colorado to be with his girlfriend, specializes in factory work but hasn't had any luck finding work in LA. To help pay the bills, he helps people move with his truck... and he only asks for $10 an hour because he "wouldn't feel right" charging any more than that. I told him with the cost of living in LA, he should really consider bumping up his services since it's such hard manual labor... great guy though, honest and responsible.

Yesterday I sold a (used) bed for $170 and today I sold an old IKEA desk for $40. Everyone pays in cash and is very friendly, I've heard of a few bad eggs/horror stories but for the most part, there are some very good people out there.

Queen-size Sealy Posturpedic Ultra Plush mattress, originally $529 (I think it's only $499 in every state except CA and NV). There's a $100 off special coupon floating around this week, you can get one in the store. So total price = $429, which no other mattress store around here would match... great mattress for a great price! I've heard very good things about the mattress, RossMAN swears by it.

I like it. I sold my PDA there (after weeks of trying other places) and then brought my bike (a rebuilt Peugeot 103, just $100). They also have plenty of housing postings...should I ever need that.

I haven't seen any good jobs though :


Oh, and I like checking out the personals section - its hilarious. Shortly after the election a buncha american women posted about wanting marriage (and citizenship)...there was one that wanted to get pregnant and was willing to "educate" young guys.

I even gave a total stranger a ride from LA to SF two years ago and the person had some tall tales to exchange - we had a awsome conversation about Thailand and his observations living there. He even filled my gas tank and help drive because I offered a ride to SF...

I've got a CL success story for you guys. Basically, I found a new job in Pittsburgh and had to move, but I wasn't 100% sure if I would stay here for more than a year, and so I didn't want to buy furniture. Also, I hate apartments, I'd reather live in a home any day.

So, I posted a "housing wanted" request on CL, and after screening a few people, I found a killer deal on a pre-furnished home, and I'm getting two bedrooms including cable/internet/utilities/furniture/in-house washer&dryer/full fridge/GARAGE/etc for $70 CHEAPER than an apartment, with no lease!

Can't really get much better than this. Oh yeah, it's near my health club too. CL rules.

I've also had a few job interviews from it, was REALLY close to getting a pretty decent job, but I lost out to another candidate. Found another job through a headhunter though.
