Newegg & Patriot just upped the ante on the rebate gamble. How about 16 GB in 8 GB sticks for $84.99 after a large $100 rebate. The deal just got harder to resist - Newegg reduced the pre-rebate price by another $75.

Patriot Gamer 2 Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)

Specs look decent as well - 1.5v, 9-9-9-24

Don't you need 16 GB with two open DIMM slots?

Very few reviews at this point & one stated that it would not work in his ASRock Z68.

Still - only a good deal if you need (ok - want) 8GB sticks. Otherwise you can still get 16 GB in 4GB chunks for the same or slightly lower cost without the life-threatening (wife) rebate.

But come on - how many of you have 1 MB SDRAM (or 256MB sticks) in the drawer today that you just won't use because it takes up a good DIMM slot.

You better be good at rebates. Although it is reported that Patriot rebates are usually good, it is a multi-step process that requires filling out an internet form & then mailing in the printed rebate with proof of purchase & other such details to make it harder to do correctly.

REBATE SUMMARY:
• Offer Code: PAT-11735 (US)
• Rebate Amount: $100.00
• Valid on orders made between: 12/13/2011 thru 12/26/2011
• Must be postmarked within 30 days of purchase

In order to obtain a rebate, visit http://patriotmem.4myrebate.com/?oc=PAT-11735 and enter the offer code shown. You will then complete your rebate form submission online. You must have internet access, a valid email address and a printer in order to claim the rebate.

In the my-rebate-is-bigger-than-yours spirit, last week the same kit sold for $240 - $150 rebate, ha ha ha.

Ouch - I thought the $100 rebate was tough. It will show as $185 before rebate now so it is a little better than the $150 reported above. Maybe next week it will be $125 with a $40 rebate?

According to a DigiTimes report, Kingston is buying large volumes of DRAM chips from Elpida and Toshiba, in an effort to help the two digest inventories by the end of financial year 2011. This has been a disaster year for memory chip manufacturers. They have overproduced, and coupled with lower PC sales, it has rendered many manufacturers cash-strapped and looking for funding to survive. In the retail and channel markets, we are getting to see some unreal prices, with 8 GB DDR3 modules going for as low as US $49.99, and 2x 4 GB dual-channel DDR3 memory kits well within reach of the masses.

The move to buy up large stocks of chips from Elpida and Toshiba has a few implications to PC enthusiasts, because chips made by the two go into making high-end DDR3 modules. It could give Kingston a chance to come up with high-performing DDR3 modules at attractive price points, and help raise the brand up the ranks of others that PC enthusiasts look out for. Korea's Hynix Semiconductor is also among Kingston's DRAM chip suppliers, and it is reported that Kingston could also buy stocks of DRAM chips from it. Simply put, this is the best time to buy memory. Planning to gift your special someone something fluffy or shiny this Christmas? Try a memory upgrade instead!
