I've heard similar stories about stuff like this in the US too. Ugh, stuff like this makes me sick. What ever happened to freedomof speech?

Yeah, that's an odd one alright. I really don't what kind of comment to add. I don't quite think the boy should've been put into jail or detention at all for the story he wrote, but it still should be checked out to make sure the so-called 'threats' do not have any truth behind them. What a weird situation to be in.....

What sounds weird, unless I'm misunderstanding, is when the kid first was put in jail, the parents extended their vacation for another week, jail=free babysitting? At first I thought they'd taken time off to help their son, but it actually sounds more like they extended their away time

You know what I thought was really lame at the LA autoshow.
The Mazda MP3. it was essentially a protege with an MP3 player. What kind of lamer would name a car after a file format.

So...according to the article, the boys had been teased, 'tortured', bullied, yadda yadda, for their entire lives by other kids in the school. Then they wrote a story to present to their drama class in which there are scenes of death of members of the staff and other students (the article is totally vague on what may have been contained, so for all any of us know the damn thing specifically said "on January 15 we're going to kill you all&quot.

I certainly think that SOMETHING needed to be done for a student to be stupid enough to present something like that if they were the victims of that type of behavior from other students. What kind of kid goes nuts and takes a gun to school and opens up on a class? The kind that were teased, bullied, etc. and didn't have many friends, which the article makes these two appear to be.

Arresting them may not have been the RIGHT thing, but when you have to worry that they've been planning an attack for some time and may have the guns and bombs in their bedroom right now, it may have seemed like the best idea at the time.

i am glad that i am not in elementary school now, some of the songs we used to sing would have gotten us the death penalty if this kid is getting thrown in jail ...

Would have been civilized to just contact the parents, let them now, suggest they send him to a shrink or some sort of a social worker. Putting a 16year old boy to jail for writing a story will only make things worse. Hey I once made a animation using Delux Animation where there was a guy on a table and there was one other guy standing beside him bashing his head with a mallet, SEND ME TO JAIL.

But did that animation look like or have the name of someone that had previously been known to bully or otherwise abuse you? Probably not. These kids' story did.

And of course, you can see what contacting the parents would have done. They went on their fricking vacation the day after their son went to jail! Whether the boy told them it was 'okay' or not, you don't do that kind of thing. They obviously need to look into the home life of these kids, who knows how the parents are bringing them up.

well, they were just cartoon figures.

But the plane fact that a 16 year old kid can be put to jail for writing his thoughts on paper is just plain wrong, there is something more wrong here than just the kid and the parents, the system itself is wrong.

Let's say you work in a relatively small office. Maybe 20 or 25 people. One guy writes a story about shooting up the place. Killing everyone. Regardless if he targeted specific individuals, let's say he was on a mission. The way you find out is through your office's network administrator filtering email through the mail server. The man is fired. Now, after you've fired someone, who's already slightly pissed, are you worried at ALL about your safety? Come on guys, this kid was arrested for good reason. Freedom of speech, should be just that, freedom. Killing other people, is not my idea of freedom. There are, and SHOULD BE certain limitations on what people deem freedom of speech.
