I doubt she will leave anywhere close to even a normal lifespan. There is something seriously screwed up with her and its going to manifest itself in a bad way one of these days. It probably already ahs and they just haven't mentioned it in the articles. We would need information on all her major organs and I bet several of them are much worse off than a normal 16 year old. Her physical and mental development may have stopped, but time marches on doing damage to her body jsut the same as it does to all of us.

Insane..I can't imagine changing diapers for 16 years.

I'm starting year 8 of changing diapers. At least the parents of this teenager are only changing the diaper of an infant.
An 8 year old in diapers can be a big mess.

We've been told to expect her to top out at the level of a 4 year old, but that wont be until she's 18-20 year old IF she tops out there or even makes it to that level. She is currently on the level of a 9-12 month old.

My heart goes out to you man.

Same.

The article states she has had health problems when she was 4 and so on, including a time she was presumed to be dying... so it's not all rosy. I'm not sure you can separate the fountain of youth gene from any of the other "side effects" that are happening.

Problem is, people with freaky genetic problems tend to have more than one.

The second one is usually cancer, or something similarly lethal.

I am surprised they haven't run a couple genomes on this kid and have 20 lab techs analyzing the shit out of it.

They have.

Back on topic, what if this child grew in 100 year intervals. 100 years for her= 1 year for us.

Quite a lot of the human body is a one-shot deal, wearing out after 50 to 70 years.

Man...16 years of daycare. Fuck, I think I'd kill myself.

Well think about the people that are born and never mentally age past age 3....or the vegetable people. You are looking at 50+ years of child care with those people....screw that. Call me an asshole, but if a doctor told me that my child would be like any of the above, I would terminate it. It wouldn't be fair to him/her or my wife and I.

Same here. I'm just not patient enough to deal with a lifetime of dealing with what is essentially a newborn. I wouldn't even think twice about it.

I have a question for you two. Are you parents? I ask because I have a step-sister with pretty much the same condition. I'm not a parent and hardly know that side of the family, but I would never let her be euthanized or whatever.

I'm not a parent. You usually can find out while the baby is still in the womb if it is going to have issues like that. I think it would be just selfish and cruel to bring a child into the world knowing he/she would be a vegetable the rest of their life.

My sister was born with pretty severe cerebral palsy and that wasn't known pre-delivery. She can't walk, say more than a few words, and she has been in diapers for 28 years now, but she can communicate quite well and she is happy. She will get excited greeting friends and family and there is a certain childhood innocence that she will never lose. It has been difficult on my family, but I know for certain that they would not have terminated the pregnancy if they knew she would end up this way.

A guy from around here killed his kid with cerebral palsy, apparently very bad and in constant pain. They convicted him of 2nd degree murder, but there was a lot of talk, and I think the majority of the public figured he should walk.

I don't think it was criminal.

That was a tough read. Surprised wikipedia doesn't give all sides of the story though, like what his wife or family members thought, etc.

Could this be a step in evolution?

Most likely she'll never reproduce, so no.

But imagine if they can unlock the genes that cause this!? We could potentially pause the aging process at age 22. The child is a miracle.

Most of those tests are false positives (meaning the doctors will tell you that your baby has a good chance of down, but they never turn out that way). My wife and I opted to not have the test.

Since you are not a parent, you have no idea what it means or how it feels to have one. So how can you just say you will abort the child or kill the child when you find out that they will be an inconvience to you? Some disorders do not surface until the child is a few years old.
