they had the Maxtor for 69 with no rebates but I guess that is gone now. This looks like the best deal for 160gb

what are the dB specs on the hitachi? i thought barracuda's are the reigning champ of silence

this is my 3rd seagate barracuda, strange thing happens: when i have a 120gb and the 160gb plugged in, i can hear them due to resonance? (a fluctuating pitch) they are both 7200.7 barracuda 5.

but when i put in the 80gb barracuda with either of the 2 the whining goes away (just 7200, barracuda 4).

and when each drive is separate, no noise. anyway to reduce the resonance of two barracuda 5's? i tried placing them as far apart as possible and putting stuff between the two

but when it comes down to shear volumes of information seagate cant touch Maxtor
Maxtor is almost always first to the market with the bigger badder, denser platters.

Check your facts... Seagate is the only manufacturer right now with 100 GB per platter drives, though this is not one of them. Seagate leads in density. Other manufacturers pack more platters into a drive to get their capacities higher, Hitachi being the most extreme with 5 platters in their 400 GB monster drive.

Hey is this $50 /160GB Seagate drive available in-store at Bay Area Fry's?

I like the Seagate rebates too, my co-worker got in on an 80GB Seagate for $30 After Rebate at Fry's, he got his rebate in less than a month.

I picked up 2 at the Sacramento fry's. Before I went I saw an add saying there was an additional $10 rebate, but when I got to the store there was only the $50 one. Anyone know what the case is with this?

I jumped on this deal about 3 weeks ago when they ran it. Seagate rebates are really fast compared to most. I have 4 Seagate 7200.7 model drives (2 x 80, 120, 160), and they are all awesome!

Both drives are really quite. I have a 160 GB Hitachi SATA drive and its very very quit. The hitachi is a little bit better performing drive but i don't think you are going to notice this in real world cases. The segate definitly has the SUPERIOR warranty (5 years). My hitachi only came with a year. I definitly would jump on this deal if your in need of a hard drive. The only draw back to this deal is its not a SATA drive which i prefere but for the price why not.

SATA provides no performance advantage over ATA/100 for 7200rpm drives because even burst transfer rate is usually below 100 MB/sec. Many times you will see comparisons between the two drive types, where the cache size is also different (2MB for PATA, 8MB for SATA) and this is what accouts for the difference in system workload benchmarks. But this was some time ago, today the PATA drives can be had with the same cache size as SATA, so there should be almost no performance difference.

The question about this deal is why not opt for the Hitachi deal (same price), since Hitach is faster and quieter.

I picked up a couple of Maxtors for $69 each. I hate dealing with Fry's rebates. You'll eventually get them, but prepare to wait for a while.

Seagate = $3.2 per GB

WD = $2.5 per GB

Your math is backwards

$100 AR for 250gb is .40 cents per gig (.4 x 250gb =$100)

$49 AR for $160 is .31 cents per gig... and comes with 5 yr warranty versus 1 year with the maxtor

But i have both drives so I cant complain
