1600x1200 question

I'm thinking about getting a Dell 2001FP, but i'm a little wary because of the high native resolution. I currently have a Sony E540 21" CRT and when I set the res to 1600x1200 it's almost unusable because everything is so tiny.
Is there a workaround, or does this monitor have some way to adjust for this?
I've read some good reviews for this monitor here and I have a hard time believing that all these users are looking at postage stamp size pictures and very small type when using the internet or other comp uses.

1600x1200 is easily readable on both of my 2001FPs

I just got my 2001FP last week, and because of my lousy eyesight I'm running it at 1024x768 instead of native. At that resolution the scaling is _flawless_ text is sharp and clear.

My brother is a graphics designer and has a pair of 2001FP running at 1152x864 and he is very happy with the text quality.

So if 1600x1200 is too small, you should at least be able to run at either of those lower resolutions.

ahah its actually basically the same as the 2001FP but with with a few more inches added to the side to make up the for the extra pixels.

All I know is that running 1600x1200 on my 21" CRT is not an option. I ordered the 2001fp but if the type and pictures are super small, its going back. Hope it runs lower res at acceptable viewability (if thats a word, lol).

It should look fine and if you don't like the high res just adjust the dpi of the font...

I know you can adjust the fonts, but looking at 350 x 500 pics on the web is no fun at high res.

A buddy of mine has a ~2yr old Dell laptop with a 14" screen at 1600x1200! Now that is small, but still amazingly clear. It helps that you sit so much closer to a laptop screen.

If you want large text and readability, consider the 1905FP with 1280x1024 instead.

I'm somewhat surprised to hear that running those Dells at lower resolutions doesn't come with a major quality loss, so i would actually likely to see those pics.

I personally have yet to see an LCD that looks good at a non-native resolution, that's all.

Run it at 1600x1200 and increase all the font sizes. Only problem with this is that it can mess up the formating on some web pages.

I agreed with you years ago, but like I said above the Dell 2001fp does an excellent job of scaling to 1024x768 and 1152x864.

Aside from my 2001fp, we also have 2 at work used for trade shows, and they are also run at 1024x768. The people using them at shows also say the image looks good.

I concur with this, 100%, always. I disagree with using it's scaling. YOU ARE WASTING THAT MONITOR.

If you run at 1024x768, just go out and buy a 15" and sit a little closer to it, you'll save a ton of cash AND it'll look better.

Don't forget - you can use LARGE FONTS in any resolution. I run 1200 x 1024 with the LARGE FONT setting, and it is perfect for me. I would do the same with 1600 x 1200. You can also customize your font size without ever leaving Native Res.

I can use 1600x1200 on my 2001FP with no problems.

If you're planning on scaling it down, why are you even upgrading? Just use your 21" CRT at 1280x1024 or whatever you were going to scale the dell down to.

Well, the 2001fp came today and all I can say is WOW!!! Hooked it up and it came on as 1024x786 and I was impressed by the clarity, thought, cool I can live with this. Then I ran the drivers and bumped it up to 1600x1200 and OMG, my jaw dropped. The clarity is amazing. Type is a little small but so clear it's not a problem. Then I logged into WOW and bumped that up and whoah, this monitor is the best comp upgrade I ever made, and I've been into computors for 10 years.

reading your original post i was wondering if the AG on the sony was wearing out. you don't really notice how much a CRT monitor is worn out until you place the old one right next to a new one. plus there are geometry issues and all sorts of other gunk. DVI + non-amorphous physical pixels makes text so much easier to read on an LCD. glad you're happy

Veiwsonic had a monitor like that to. DO you know why they stopped making it?
