Ok guys,

I finailly got a Asus A7v266-e a Alpha-Pal 8045 w/YS-tech fan and a Athalon XP1600 processor I applied artic silver exactly as the web site states installed my Alpha (had a little trouble once I got to the fan shroud part) check my jumpers (I had decided to use the jumper free till I burned it in) and.........Nothing so I unmount my motherboard put it on a cardboard box pull every card but my vidieo card and zip so I take the Alpha off and there is some discoloration of the artic silver DAMM! I've read these stories here now I'm part of one.

So I install my old P2b and PIII500 to write this

Could this have been my fault? I should've probobly reversed to procedue that I followed (First assembly out of the case) but is it common for xp's to fail on the first power up? also my xp was green like a intel not yellowish like the first pictures it' was a AGKGA I'm so bummed right now this is a OEM processor so I gotta send it right back, The core isn't cracked I just hope it's not pilot error

There is a chance that it might be one of those very rare dead CPU's that come from the factory. Try it again with another proc. and let us know how it goes.

No I didn't use a spacer, IMO the only reason to use a spacer is to aviod cracking the core as they make the cpu run hotter. It would've defeated my reason for buying the Alpha 8045 in the first place. I feel the alpha gives you the best chance not to crack your core and keep your cpu cool

The Asus board also is pretty nifty but I dont have another processor to test in it. I could take it over to a friends house and "borrow" his though

Oh my. Brings back my nightmare with the Alpha. When I first got mine and put it on, I didn't install it 100% correctly and burned my 1.4 in a heatbeat! Clean off your CPU really good and look to see if there is any discoloration around the slug. If so, may it rest in peace. When I pulled the Alpha off my dead bird I noticed the ASII was sort of melted also. Man I feel for you. Try and take your stuff to your friends to test before you decide that it is in fact the CPU. Good luck!

By the way, where did you get the CPU from?

Mofunk: I bought this processor from Newegg, I already appiled for and got a RMA# but your statement about not installing the Alpha correctly gives me some pause as I too had the ASII discoloration but this board didnt even beep post or nothing the fans just spun.

If this was my fault I sorta feel bad about returning it I bought the Asus A7v266-E mainly because of the ample clearance for the 8045 I didnt want to use the Soyo Dragon plus as I took my alpha to a friends and test fitted it. BTW I just got back from his house where he kindly took his T-bird out and we tested the Motherboard it posted and both sticks of crucial memory seem to be ok.

I hope I didn't install the hsf incorrectly I tried to follow the instructions exactly what did you do wrong? Also on my next cpu what is a good burn in time before I attempt to overclock it.

Dude, good shims don't raise CPU temps at all!!! Almost all the heat from the CPU goes to the core, which is not even covered by the shim. SHims themselves are good heat conductors, so they will also transfer heat to your heatsink. If anything shims will lower temperatures becuase you can get your heatsink much tighter without having to worry about cracking the core!

Now just so I am clear, did you put his Tbird in your system and all was fine, or did you put your XP in his system? I am assuming that you put his chip in your rig. Well I guess don't feel too bad. It's not like you were slamming the voltage up to overclock the heck out of it. The Alpha can be a bit tricky, as we both found out. By the way, which washers did you use? I myself used the washers made for bigger holes and not the flat ones the first time. That gave just enough room to fry my bird. when you get the new chip just make sure that the stand offs are nice and tight and that you make sure that the HS itself gets put on firmly.

I don't know if there is a standard burn in time. I just have my own preference. I try to use mine for a week or so and keep track of numerous benchmarks. I have WinXP now and used Win2k before that, so I use all the monitoring tools under many different situations before I try to bump anything up. But I am sure there are some out there that wait all of about 5 minutes, or even some that dont wait at all. You know who you are....

Anyway, good luck with the new chip. Newegg has great support so you got a little lucky with that one.

I burn in my systems for a week before I overclock. I put Seti@home on and run it. If you leave it on it utilizes all of the CPU's clock cycles. Its a great way to test your system stability.

BTW I have a Alpha PAL 8045 on a Soyo Dragon Plus and it went on with no problems for me.

Sorry to hear about your T-Bird

Yes that exactly what I did ! I used the "Big washers" (the ones with the little flange) and once again yes it was my friends regular T-bird (if your reading thanks Josh)I also wanted to make sure my memory was ok. So he was pretty cool about it considering I just fried a cpu less than 24 hrs ago
(Geez I'm soooo freak'in embarassed about this) I've worked in a couple of smallish computer shops while going to school, and most people come to me for advice/help (Maybe the only positive out'a this is my phone wont ring as much)

Anyway, good luck with the new chip. Newegg has great support so you got a little lucky with that one.

Well I've always liked there service I couldv'e gotten the xp cheaper here (Chicago area) but Newegg is so above board and fair

Thanks I was thinking about sisoftsandra but seti@home is a better solution. And sorry if I wasn't completely clear yes it wouldve fit the Soyo Dragon+ and it was only $139 at Krex here in Chi but the latest revision of the A7v266-e has more clearance for the 8045 but it has less features and cost's more($161) and depending on what website you read slightly better performance

I wasn't knocking the Soyo in fact I was strongly considering it,however when I switched my sights form the SK6 to the 8045. My buddy decided on the Soyo and is extermely happy with both the performance and price, unfortunatly for him he's had the 2 Shuttle and 1 Epox Via 266a boards first , It alarmed me so I wanted to show how careful I was trying to be. No knock on the Soyo at all.

I guess with the Epox and Shuttle board's if you get a good one hey it's great but I 've got a A-1 Electronics 400watt psu and it's got a low 5v rail and I didn't want to play the find the good board Epox game I read about here. My times worth the extra $56 bucks

I didn't think you were knocking the Soyo I just wanted you to know that it can go on without too much difficulty if you were to do this again

When you get your new chip, mount the Alpha with the flat washers. I used the notched ones myself and it caused the HS to have just enough space to not work! Go with the flat washers and you'll be fine. Good luck to ya!
