Are the 160GB models significantly different than the 60GB/120GB models? I would assume that the 60GB/120GB use 60GB platters. Do the 160GB models use two 80GB platters, or three partially-defective 60GB or 63GB platters? Does anyone know?

Do any of these 160GB retail packages include controller cards still? That could make the deal worth it.

Edit 2: I came across an interesting thread - I think I encountered the same sounds when mine died.

yup, when my maxtor died, the replacement drive that they sent me died in 3 months!!!!

I have like 6 in use, some over 2 years and not a problem...have had many IBMS go bad and a WD...I guess it all depeinds on the assembly line people and how drunk they are that day.

I don't quite understand why you'd buy a hard drive when you really don't need one. They are just going to get cheaper and faster, what's the rush? This is a good deal but really nothing outrageous, no reason to make a knee-jerk decision.

Good deal, couldn't resist the price, even if they are Maxtors. Already have 2 WD160 and one Maxtor 160. Got two, threw on a 30 off 150 coupon, brings it down pretty close to 50 cents a gig.

Now time to expand the RAID...

And I've had the exact opposite experience as you. I've had multiple Maxtors and never had a problem. Picked up a 160GB WD and I'm now sending in for RMA after a month and a half. Pisses me off but I've had good luck so far and haven't lost any data. Still not as bad as my first tech job. We sold Quantum drives and had "The Block" for repairs. Hard drive come in that wasn't spinning, just give it a whack and off you go. And this was done on hundreds of drives. Guess that's why they're no longer in business.
